Throughout the summer and fall of 1967, temperature mea~urement~ were madeat Babine Lake in conjunction with observations of the di~tribution of under­yearling ~ockeye. On five occssion~, July 3-4, July 16-17, Auguot 24-26,September 24-26, and October 21-23, temperature profilea were taken at up to14 stations located at mid-lake and along the main axi~ of the main lake baain(Fig. 1). At each ~tation reading~ were taken at the ~urface (actually 15 embelow) and then every merre down to a maximum of 80 m. Secchi disc readingsand cloud cover were recorded at each station.

A thermistor thermometer, accurate to the nearest 0.1 C was used throughout.A 15 Ib weight waa fastened to the probe to keep the wire a~ near vertical a~

pos~ible. Where a substantial deviation occurred, the angle was noted and thedepth adjusted accordingly.

The purpose of this report ia to describe very generally the thermalstructure of the main lake basin and to provide a record of the individualobservations (Tables i-14). Observations of previoua years (1956 to 19(3),together with bathymetric maps, are provided by Johnson (MS, 19(5).

Temperature profiles obtained on July 3-4, and then in August, September,and October hsve been u~ed to show the major changes in the thermal structurethroughout the su_r and fall (Fig. I). In early July, the thermocline wasnot yet "ell developed. Surface temperatures varied from ahout 8 to 13 C.The lake waS nearly isothermal below 30 m. A prominent feature was the wedgeof relatively warm surface water extending from the Southeast end of the lake(Station 12), into the North"eat end (to Station 3).

In late August the thermal structute of the lake "aa fairly uniEorm.water was about 17 C at the surface and decreased to about 15 C at 10 m.very well defined thermocline occurred between roughly 10 and 20 m. Thethermocline was particularly sharp at the southeaat end (Station 14), wherethe temperature dropped nearly 10 C in 5 metrea. Below 20 m the water waa7 C or le~a at mo~t stationa.

The lake had cooled conaiderably by September 24-26. Surface "ater wa~

13-14 C. The thermocline waa much lesa pronounced than in August. Warmerwater waa in the northwest end of the baain. At Stations I to 5, water 8 C ormore extended down to 30 or 40 m, whereas further uplake, 8 C water extendeddown to only 20 m.

The water was nesring an isothermal state in late October. The surface hadcooled to between 7 and 9 C. A relatively warm layer of water wa~ ati11 evidentin the northwest end of the baSin.
