DFS GC-HRMS, a look back…
…how did it start?
10
1948: “CH1”, first MS prototype/birth of MAT
- Dr. Ludolf Jenckel(Atlas Werke AG) together with one collegue develops in 1 year the first MS prototype in the cellar of a hospital
11
- After completition he persuades his company to set up a small devision for MS: Atlas MAT
1958: “CH4” – First International Success
- More than 400 installed by 1967
- Applications: e.g.Analysis of coffee aroma (headspace);Perfume mixtures;Cigarette smoke
12
- MAT expands
- Early sixties:GC attached to MS
First GC/MS: CH4 coupled to capillary GC
1972: “MAT 311” (double focusing MS)
13
Max. Resolution ?
1982 – 1986: “8200”
14
1987 – 2005: MAT90 / 95 series
• 1987 - MAT 90• 1992 - MAT 95• 1995 - MAT 95 S• 1998 - MAT 95 XL• 2001 MAT 95 XP
15
• 2001 - MAT 95 XP
Our unique dual GC configuration started with MAT95…

Electronics: “talking to the boards”
The DFS GC-HRMS key feature? – Toroidal ESA for…

…more sensitivity, more ions at same resolution

What was new with the DFS GC-HRMS?
• Toroidal ESA for more ions• Instrument shipped in one unit, no assembling of MS onsite• all inside e.g. roughing pumps – only exception: water chiller• moves on wheels• lightest double focusing magnetic sector• State-of-the-art electronics• new robust detector dynode design
22
• new robust detector dynode design• quick exchange ion source• new software, etc., etc.
Almost a benchtop GC-MS, one that stands on the floor……and comes with a built-in bench
The name? Double Focusing Sector “DFS”

“Robustness by size”
DFS GC-HRMS ion source - designed for combining highest sensitivity with robustness, because sensitivity alone is not enough.
“No, this is not only one single, nicely selected chromatogram”
“Yes, this is an installation spec”
