It is with great pleasure that I write to the first publication of the Quarterly Lions Bulletin of District 306A2. First of all, let me congratulate all Club Presidents for accepting the leadership of their respective clubs for the Lionistic Year 2012/2013. You are the vigor of my task force and the District’s progress is dependent on your clubs’ performance, integrity and enthusiasm.

I am extremely happy that I was able to conduct a Workshop for Club Officers on Sunday, 10th June 2012 to enhance their courage and a Hand Book to each Club Officer was provided with very useful information to guide the administration of their clubs. After my return from South Korea taking oath as the District Governor

the Installation of my District Cabinet was conducted in a colorful manner on Saturday, 14th July 2012 under the patronage of PIP Lion Mahendra Amarsuriya PMJF and his gracious spouse Lion Kushlani PMJF. It was followed by our First Cabinet Meeting with success. I was able to install Two New Lions Clubs – Lions Club of Dehiwala Pepiliyana and Lions Club of Kohuwala Circle with induction of 20 and 32 Charter Members respectively during the Cabinet Meeting.

Let me appreciate clubs which have formed Ladies Committees on line with the District Ladies Committee taking up challenges alongside their Lions. It was the District Ladies Committee that organized a scintillating Lions Family Day on 1st September 2012 at Sulanka Resort, Aluthgama where we were able to induct 58 Family Lions by PIP Lion Mahendra Amarsuriya. We had a participation of over 700 Lions including Lion Ladies, Leos and children. All enjoyed the occasion while

I was a lucky child. My home-town of Auburn, Indiana, USA, had a well-stocked public li-brary. In fact, the school I at-tended had one, too. I even had books of my own. One of my favorites was Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Most children around the

world, even in many developed countries, have little or no ac-cess to reading material and that is a key reason why one in four people of reading age cannot read. Illiteracy severely limits individuals and communities struggling with poverty, disease and other social ills.

We Lions are changing that.

It’s with great pleasure that I ex-tend this message to the 1st District News Bulletin of this Lionistic Year.

At the dawn of a new lionistic Year District Governor Deshaban-du Lion Duminda Munasinghe has undertaken the steering of the Dis-trict with 1st lady Rasadari. Being a member of the DG team, it will be my main duty & responsibility to extend the fullest support to DG, along with my brother 2nd Vice District Governor Lion Arjun Abeysinghe.

District Cabinet in various capacities and I am confident that they will execute their responsibilities to their best of ability working under my vision and mission as true and trusted Relations. Specially, I wanted my Line Leaders, part of our DG Team, the Region and Zone Chairpersons to perform well in carrying out the duties in respect of Clubs under their purview. They should follow the clubs routine work and help them to prioritize on Membership Growth, Engage in Regional and Zonal Advisory Meetings, Submission of WMMR in time to the International, Payment of International and District Dues, Implement Meaningful Projects, Advise on any other

matters as required by Clubs. Special attention should be focused on Quality of the Lion prospects before offering them membership, their ability to offer Good Relationship, Capability and Enthusiasm in service to less fortunate etc.

Finally, I hope that all of you will do utmost to building the Image of Lionism of our District throughout the year by engaging in constructive and significant projects. Rasadari joins me in wishing all of you a bright lionistic year.

We renew our commit-ment to sight yearly with World Sight Day and the Sharing the Vision Global Service Action Campaign, scheduled this year for October. Now is the time to plan your club or district's par-ticipation in this worldwide ef-fort of all Lions. Please see Shar-ing the Visionfor project ideas and other resources. Reaching into new frontiers like literacy is one way that Lions are expanding our worldwide impact. With a view of assisting the poorer sections of the community, International President 2007/2008 Lion Mahendra Amarasuriya PMJF decided to form a charitable trust. The trust was termed “Lanka Lions Foundation”, the primary object was to assist the poorer sections of the community financially to uplift their quality of life. It was intended to provide poverty alleviation schemes, housing, educational, health care facilities and employment opportunities.

The Trustees comprise of senior Lions including the incumbent Council Chairman and 6 District Governors of the sub Districts. PIP Mahendra Amarasuriya donated Rs 10,000/- as the first donation and matched every donation of Rs 10,000/- from Lions with a donation of Rs 10,000/- from his own finances. Every donor is awarded a beautiful engraved plaque and a special pin in recognition of the donation and the name of the Lion is added to the List of Donors.

An interest free loan system has been put in place by the Foundation to assist those, who are unable to avail themselves of credit facilities from other formal sources, through the lions clubs in the Multiple District. The loans are granted for a period of 1 year, recoverable in 10 monthly installments, with a grace period of 2 months. There would be no interest charged from the beneficiary. However the sponsoring Lions club has to pay a service fee of 10% upfront to cover administration costs. A process consultant has undertaken to administer the loans. Kindly note that the clubs sponsoring the loans, irrevocably undertake to indemnify the repayment of the loan, if the borrower fails to pay the installments.

Lions are encouraged to contribute to the Foundation and become stakeholders in this noble venture. The Lions Clubs are encouraged to assist the poorer sections of the community by sponsoring interest free loans.
