September 2013 District 19A Newsletter - District Governor Peter Cheng

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos,

We have kicked off September with a District Banner Passing event attended by representatives from 29 Lions clubs. International Director Teresa Mann brought greetings from the area of Hong Kong and Macau. CC Jerry Flood and Donna Flood were our honoured guests. I would like to thank all of you who participated that made this extremely successful and memorable ceremony.

From the reports given by our enthusiastic cabinet members on September 7th, 2013/2014 promises to be a very successful year for our District.

The extension team is working hard. At the way things are progressing we will be ready to charter our first new Lions club before the end of 2013.

Vancouver Cathay Lions 25th Charter Anniversary Celebration

I am pleased to report that our northern Lions clubs are very active serving their communities in the summer months.

The reception of our northern clubs shows strong support for our Lions family. Members come out in big numbers hosting me and my entourage. I am honoured to have my friendship banner hung along side with all the previous district governors in their dens.

The tour of the Smithers Lions den was enjoyable. Their den has well documented their club’s past 50 years history and their love of being a Lions club.

It was especially nice to participate with the Prince Rupert Lions Club in the annual Northern Pacific Marathon BBQ. We served over 150 participants on a sunny afternoon in Port Edwards. This BBQ shows me how appreciative the Lions are in their communities in their service efforts.

There is a potential of starting a Lions club in Fraser Lake.

As the gas line and oil pipe lines are starting out in Kitimat area giving new economic stability to the region. Houston mills are producing and hiring workers. Alcan Aluminum has been reopened. Shell is building a refinery in Kitimat and new families are moving into the area. Our Lions clubs are very exciting with the opportunities for growth in the area. The port of Prince Rupert is presently expanding from four cranes to eight cranes. Prince Rupert boasts that they are the second deepest natural harbor in the world. Goods are directly from China and Japan to their container port and distributed through-out Canada and U.S.A.

We have had very favourable comments from our clubs on how they appreciate the open communication this year. The GLT is scheduling some fantastic training sessions starting in October. Please look out for update information in your E-mail ‘in box’.

I am now looking forward to visit clubs in our local area.

Yours in service, ~ DG Peter Cheng ~

An Annual Art Contest for Kids Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For 25 years, more than eight million children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest. The theme of the 2013-14 Peace Poster Contest is "Our World, Our Future." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate. Promoting the Arts Each year's art contest for kids consists of an original theme incorporating peace. Participants use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists' life experiences and culture. Spreading Peace and International Understanding Twenty-four international Peace Poster entries are selected each year, representing the work of approximately 400,000 young participants worldwide. Posters are shared globally via the Internet, the media and exhibits around the world. Peace Poster Contest Judging Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners. Peace Poster Contest Awards International winners will be notified on or before February 1, 2014. One international grand prize winner will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony with the sponsoring club president and two family members at Lions Day with the United Nations (subject to change). Each of the 23 merit award winners will receive a cash award of US$500 and a certificate of achievement. Look forward to seeing an artwork sponsored by a club from MD19A that will be chosen to the final list. Please engage one school from your local community to participate the contest and submit the winning artwork to district office no later than November 15th to be eligible for the contest.

Yours in Lionism, Lion Wanda Su District 19A Peace Poster Contest Chairperson President of Vancouver Pacific Lions Club (A-1)
