MA8151 – ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS - I

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

CO1: The goal of this course is for students to gain proficiency in calculus computations. In calculus, we use three main

tools for analyzing and describing the behavior of functions: limits, derivatives, and integrals. Students will use these tools to solve application

problems in a variety of settings ranging from physics and biology to business and economics.

CO2: To familiarize the student with functions of several variables. This is needed in many branches of engineering.

CO3: To make the student acquire sound knowledge of techniques in solving Integral calculus that are used to solve model

engineering problems.

CO4: To acquaint the student with mathematical tools needed in evaluating multiple integrals and their usage

CO5: To make the student acquire sound knowledge of techniques in solving ordinary differential equations that model

engineering problems.

COURSE OUTCOME:

Understanding of the ideas of limits and continuity and an ability to calculate with them and apply them.

Improved facility in algebraic manipulation.

Fluency in differentiation.

Define and find maxima and minima for functions of several variables.

Fluency in integration using standard methods, including the ability to find an appropriate method for a given integral.

Find the area, volume integral.

Change the order of integration.

Solve the multiple integrals.

Understanding the ideas of differential equations and facility in solving simple standard examples.

INTRODUCTION:

Calculus is one of the most beautiful intellectual achievements of human being. The mathematical study of change motion,

growth or decay is calculus. One of the most important ideas of differential calculus is derivative which measures the rate o f change of a

given function. Concept of derivative is very useful in Engineering, Science, Economics, Medicine and Computer Science. In some

practical and theoretical problems, it is required to find the largest and smallest values of a function of two variables where the variables

are connected by some given relation or condition known as a constraint. The Jacobians themselves are of great importance in solving for

the reverse (inverse functions) derivatives, transformation of variables from one coordinate system to another coordinate system

(Cartesian to polar etc..).They are also useful in area and volume elements for surface and volume integrals.

PREREQUISITE:

Basic concepts of differentiation and integration, differential equations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

CO1: To make the students conversant with boiler feed water requirements, related problems and water treatment techniques.

CO2: To develop an understanding of the basic concepts of phase rule and its applications to single and two component systems and appreciate the purpose and significance of alloys.

CO3: Industrial applications of surface chemistry, catalysis and metallurgy

CO4: Types of fuels, calorific value calculations, manufacture of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels.

CO5: Principles and generation of energy in batteries, nuclear reactors, solar cells, wind mills and fuel cells.

CO6: Preparation, properties and applications of engineering materials.

COURSE OUTCOME:

The knowledge gained on engineering materials, fuels, energy sources and water treatment techniques will facilitate better understanding of engineering processes and applications for further learning.

INTRODUCTION:

The course traces the history of water treatment methods from ancient times to today's sophisticated systems and also the effects of

chemical and biological factors on the purity of water are explained. Surface chemistry describes the basic concepts of surface science with

graphical illustrations and experimental results. The course is intended to make the students and research familiarize with binary and ternary

phase diagrams and microstructure of different materials.

INTRODUCTION:

It is graphical representation of physical objects and their relationship. The ability to read drawing is the most important requirement of all

technical people in engineering profession. In the basic engineering drawing we mainly discuss about the geometrical drawing, it is the art of

representation of objects on a drawing sheet and is the foundation of all engineering drawing.
