  • 3Dulwich College is one of the UKs oldest independent schools, founded in South London as a boys school in 1619. Dulwich College International (DCI) was established to bring the Dulwich education to students around the world and is now one of the fastest growing UK independent school networks. Through DCI, Dulwich College has been in Asia for over ten years, building bridges between Eastern and Western communities and delivering high academic results and a well-rounded education.

DCI has a 100-year exclusive partnership with the prestigious Dulwich College London to expand the Dulwich network in Asia and around the world. We are directly licensed and academically supervised by Dulwich College London and enjoy a close and productive partnership with the College. We are also inspected annually by the Deputy Headmaster of Dulwich College London to ensure that we comply fully with their standards.

Dulwich International High School Suzhou (DHSZ), with a current enrolment of approximately 450 students, was founded in 2012 as a means for Chinese national students to have the opportunity to study a rigorous international curriculum based upon the Dulwich College London educational philosophy. DHSZ is part of a network of schools owned and managed by Dulwich College International (DCI), which is based in Shanghai. The DCI group of schools currently comprises five international schools in China and Asia and two high schools. Dulwich College Shanghai, which opened in 2003, was the first DCI school and is now one of the top private schools in Shanghai, with a reputation for outstanding excellence. Following the resounding success of that school, DCI started similarly successful schools in Beijing, Suzhou, Seoul, Singapore and Zhuhai and will be opening a new schools in Minhang (Shanghai) in August 2016.

We have close links with all the other Dulwich schools in the network, which gives us all the benefits of being an integral part of a larger family of schools offering a high quality, value-for-money education that provides our students with a passport to a wide range of excellent universities around the world.

The close collaboration among our Colleges stimulates innovation and encourages an international outlook, which we believe provides students an advantage in the future they will face. The result is a community where academic ability is nourished, creativity is valued, diversity is celebrated and inspiration is paramount.

  • Our School and Facilities

  • 6We have moved into our new school building, on the shared campus with our sister school, Dulwich College Suzhou, in Suzhou Industrial Park. Through extra-curricular activities, competitions and social functions, our students have many opportunities to meet with the international students and learn from each others cultures.

Our current site provides our students with an excellent environment for learning and access to a wide range of educational resources. More than four times the size of the old space shared with Suzhou High School, the new purpose-built building offers 16,959 square meters of space and numerous opportunities for students new and old. Each room has access to smart technology, as well as central air conditioning and air filtration systems, to ensure the best learning environment. With 56 indoor teaching spaces covering a wide range of courses, including new science labs custom designed to maximize student engagement in course material, facilities new to DHSZ students, such as a library, a black box theatre, music practice rooms, sport fields, a roof garden, and a medical centre, there is so much for the students to take advantage of in our new home.

Our dining services include a dining hall that serves four meals per day, and a coffee shop that offers sandwiches and snacks throughout the school day. A Nutrition Committee works with our catering providers to ensure healthy and nutritious food options are available to all students and staff.

The Boarding House provides accommodation for over 75% of our students, with shared social areas available to them for studying and entertainment. A medical centre is located on the first floor of the facility, along with the boarding parents apartment. Mr. Daniel Dorrington, our Geography teacher, and Mrs. Rebecca Dorrington, our Drama teacher, are the new boarding parents and live full-time in the facility. The boarding parents not only help to supervise the boarding students during the week, but also provide weekend activities for term boarders. The live-in boarding staff consists of eleven employees, including the boarding parents, the Chinese boarding manager, and eight boarding tutors.

AcademicsThe Dulwich International High School Suzhou curriculum has been designed to enable your child to achieve his or her future educational aspirations.

We deliver an academically rigorous, challenging and rewarding academic curriculum for students between the ages of 14 and 19 who are planning to attend a university outside China when they finish school. The curriculum we offer is valued and accepted by universities in most countries around the world, especially in the U.K., Australia, Canada and the U.S.

We offer the University of Cambridge IGCSE programme which is the preparatory curriculum for A Levels. We offer both a one-year and a two-year IGCSE programme, but it is our strong recommendation that students complete the full two-year programme because it establishes a much better foundation for the demanding A Level programme that follows and it also gives students time to develop and consolidate the sound English language skills that are so vital for academic success at A Level and in their university studies thereafter.

After successfully completing the IGCSE programme, students are promoted to our two-year A Level programme. It is a prerequisite for acceptance to the A Level programme that students pass five subjects at IGCSE (or equivalent): with at least a B Grade and the majority of our IGCSE students do considerably better than that. We also admit new students to our programme for the final two A Level years.

The final A Level examinations, taken in at least three subjects, are the entry requirements for admission into British universities and are accepted and welcomed by top universities worldwide, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

As well as excellent academic results, students need to have high levels of proficiency in spoken and written English. Throughout both programmes, we support our students to develop fluency in English and to work towards achieving the very best possible scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and/or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Our students are also prepared for the SAT examinations required for entry to many U.S. colleges and universities.

The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is offered in over 100 countries worldwide and is widely recognized by higher education institutions and employers around the world as evidence of academic ability and attainment.

The IGCSE programme encourages learner-centred and enquiry-based approaches to learning. It develops skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving, providing excellent preparation for the demands of A Level and university study.

The assessment of IGCSE courses includes written and oral tests, coursework and practical assessment. Some subjects have only external examinations, while others combine examinations with coursework.

Coursework is set and marked by the teacher and externally moderated by Cambridge International Examination (CIE). IGCSE examination sessions occur twice a year, in May/June and October/November. Results are issued in August and January. The grade scale for Cambridge IGCSE is A* to G.

Students typically begin their IGCSE studies at 14 or 15 years of age, depending on whether they are taking a one-year or two-year IGCSE programme. Our students generally study between 5 and 9 IGCSE subjects and follow a complementary programme of both compulsory and optional non-examined subjects that support their preparation for A Levels.

Students and parents need to consider their interests and strengths very carefully when selecting IGCSE options. More details about the one-year and two-year IGCSE programme we offer at DHSZ can be found in our IGSCE Programme Booklet.

The Cambridge International Advanced Level (A Level) qualifications are widely recognised and valued by universities and employers alike. Some US universities give up to a years credit for high scores achieved at A Level.

A Level is a two-year programme comprising AS Levels in the first year and A2 Levels in the second year. Students typically begin their A Level studies at 16 or 17 years of age.

Most students study four AS Levels in the first year of the programme and then select three of those four subjects to take forward to the more advanced A2 Level in the second year. They also follow a complementary programme of compulsory non-examined subjects that support their preparation for university applications.Examination sessions occur twice a year, in June and November, with results issued in August and January respectively. The grade scale for Cambridge InternationalA Level is A* to E.

Students need to consider carefully their subject choices, taking into consideration their career plans and aspirations and after detailed consultation with our counselling team. More details of our two-year A Level programme can be found in the A Level Programme Booklet.

Visual and Performing Arts was created in DHSZ to bring together the practical arts subjects that give students a balance to their academic studies. It brings together the collaborative energies of three disciplines where students can be creative through exploration, skills and creativity. Drama allows students to gain confidence in performance and speech, Music through the playing of instruments and creating individual musical composition and Art through skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles and printmaking. Drama is taken by every student in the school and is not an examination subject.

The VPA department and the subjects that are within it (Art/Drama/Music) are subjects that encourage students personal expression, confidence, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, powers of observation, and analytical abilities. They complement literary, mathematical, scientific and factual subjects.

We provide expert tuition and are uncompromising in our commitment to academic excellence. We have a multicultural international team of teachers who are carefully selected for their skills, professional knowledge and experience. All our teachers have degrees and teaching qualifications and have graduated from good universities around the world. Many of our teachers hold post-graduate qualifications in their subject specialisms.

Our teachers offer our students excellent subject knowledge, enthusiasm and approachability. They play a key role in helping our students to make a smooth transition into an English language-learning environment. English is the language of instruction and we encourage all our students to speak English, both inside and outside the classroom.

Our teachers also help their students to adapt to a challenging curriculum that promotes active participation and discussion, higher order critical thinking, creative problem solving, teamwork, and self-directed research. Good independent study skills are vital to academic success and our teachers help our students to develop and maintain positive study habits.

Whilst academic success is undoubtedly very important, in most cases, universities are looking for much more in the students they recruit. Students who join DHSZ are likely to encounter a very different set of challenges to those they have experienced thus far in their education. Consistent with the Dulwich ethos is an expectation that students participate in a range of extra-curricular and service projects. This broad approach to the holistic development of our students offers the best possible credentials and preparation for university life.

Through our diverse and rich programme of extra-curricular clubs and activities, assemblies and trips, we ensure that our students are able to acquire additional skills and to demonstrate a commitment to other interests. We also foster a strong sense of community spirit and friendship through participation in activities beyond the classroom. The Dulwich experience shapes and develops students so that they are able to derive the greatest possible benefits from their foreign university studies.

    Beyond the Classroom

    2013

At Dulwich, teachers also lead ECAs and were always approachable after classes if I ever wanted to further discuss an academic interest or idea. I think this connection beyond the classroom reinforces the quality of teaching and knowledge exchange between teacher and student, because students are less afraid to ask questions; since they can connect with their teachers better; they can ask questions in a more clear and eloquent manner.

Each student is assigned to a tutor group, and they meet with their tutor on a regular basis. The tutors track students progress closely and provide guidance and encouragement. In turn, the tutors work with the Heads of IGCSE and A Level to ensure that all our students are well known and carefully monitored. The tutors play a very important part in guiding our students towards becoming self-directed, independent learners and confident young adults who are well prepared to cope with the challenges of life at university by the time they graduate.

We also have a team of Parent Advocates who support the work of the Heads of Year and the Form Tutors by maintaining high levels of contact and communication with the parents of our students. We believe that education is a partnership between home and school and that parents have a vital role to play helping their child learn and develop. We encourage parents to work closely with us and be actively involved in supporting their childs academic and personal well-being.

    University Counselling

    2014

I found the counseling office incredibly helpful when I was applying to colleges. They didnt only help me find schools that seemed to fit, but also on a more personal level, they helped me to think and know myself better. I am very grate-ful for what they offered me throughout the application season even to this day.

All the students at DHSZ expect to attend universities outside China and we take great care in preparing our students for their university applications. The university application process abroad is considerably more complex than the equivalent process in China; all our students attend classes and workshops that prepare them thoroughly to make informed best choices about the next stage of their educational journey.

Our school is the safe bridge for our students to the university of their choice and we have a team of expert college and university counsellors to provide our students and their parents with specific careers advice, practical help and support. From the time each student joins DHSZ, our counsellors work with him or her on a regular basis to map out an individual guidance plan to achieve a university place that fits their aims and suits their abilities. Our counsellors spend time with each student and their parents in individual sessions during the application process. Our parents are also provided with support and information that helps them to become actively involved in the process. We hold various information sessions throughout the year and our counsellors are always available to talk to parents face-to-face on an appointment basis or on the phone. By the end of their Year 12, students will not only have selected their best-fit universities, they will have also gained skills in research, analytical thinking and public speaking.

Furthermore, we bring the universities to our students. Our counsellors have strong links with a wide range of excellent universities around the world and host visits to our school from the admissions officers of almost 100 of those universities throughout the year. Our students are able to spend time with these admissions officers to discuss the courses they offer, as well as to find out general information about the college or university they represent.

The proof of the excellent systematic support our students receive is that our graduating students are successful in gaining admissions to the universities of their choice.

Most of our students go on to attend top research universities, liberal arts colleges, specialty universities and art schools around the world, including Oxford and Cambridge and other universities in the Russell Group in the U.K.; the Ivy League universities in the U.S. and McGill in Canada.

  • When you decide to apply for admission to DHSZ for your son or daughter, you are making a wise and thoughtful choice. We do not simply prepare students for entrance to university; we prepare them to do well and to be successful when they get there.

When you make contact with our Admissions staff, they will assist you through the Admissions process and answer all your questions. They are happy to advise you about the best course for your child.

The curriculum we offer is very challenging and entry to our school is selective. Academic ability is important but acceptance is not based entirely on the test results. We consider the potential of each student and make our decisions based on a range of attributes. A reasonable level of English proficiency is important for students to be able to access the curriculum.

Do not, however, assume that your son or daughter is not good enough.

Many candidates just require additional support. We especially welcome students who are academically gifted and ambitious, hard-working and well-motivated.

Applicants are tested in English, Mathematics and Science. We also interview all candidates to see if they are suitable to join our school.

The only way to determine if your child is suited to our school is to pay us a visit. Our Admissions staff will welcome you, show you around and give you information about how to apply. They will also give you an honest and confidential assessment of your childs chance of gaining admission to DHSZ. We look forward to welcoming you!

These courses will be planned, taught and assessed by highly experienced and professional native English speaking Dulwich teachers and is the only programme that is certified and recognised by DHSZ. Our proven teaching methods emphasise task-based learning and interactive group work.
