• Much of the food you eat is changed to sugar by the body. This sugar is in the blood.

• Insulin is the hormone that helps the sugar get from the blood to the part of the body. The body uses the sugar for energy.

• With diabetes, body cannot use sugar for energy.

• Sometimes you do not make enough insulin. Sometimes you make insulin but it does not work right.

• Without enough insulin the sugar does not get to the body parts. The sugar builds in the blood. This is called diabetes.

Types of diabetes

• There are two types of diabetes.• Type I diabetes: You make little or

no insulin.• Type II diabetes: Your insulin does

not work right or you may not make enough insulin.

Causes of diabetes

• Diabetes runs in families (hereditary).• People who are overweight gets

diabetes.• Diabetes happen more often as you

get older.• Some medicine or other sickness may

cause diabetes.• Diabetes is not contagious.• There is no cure for diabetes.

However, good treatment is available.

How to prevent diabetes

• Learn everything that you can about diabetes.

• Eat right food.• Take your medicine.• Stay active.• Stop smoking.• See your doctor regularly.

Symptoms of low blood sugar

• Tremors.• Nervousness.• Excess sweating/perspiration.• Excess/frequent hunger.• Mood disturbances.• Cognitive problems/having trouble

thinking right.

Symptoms of high blood sugar

• Feeling very thirsty.• Passing a lot of urine.• Feeling very tired.• Feeling very hungry.• Having problem seeing.

Blood sugar testing

Blood sugar testing is important because:

• It tells you if your blood sugar is too low or too high.

• It tells you whether your treatment is working or not.

• It helps avoid any emergencies.
