QUESTION TWO

The real challenge to Question Two is to identify the correct database(s) to search;

therefore, you have to ask yourself the question-“what is the question behind the

question?” as one student phrased it on the discussion board.

I determined this was a question related to computers so I went to FILE 411

DIALINDEX and reviewed the “One Search Categories” on the Bluesheet and selected

COMPSCI. From that list I chose a few databases to search (see next entry).

? b 411

I chose two databases from the COMPSCI list of databases: FILE 275 Gale Group

Computer Database and 674Computer News Full Text. I noticed that File 674 has not

updated its files since 2006, but searched anyway. I could have extended my search, but

FILE 275 had what I needed.

The second part of the assignment asks for a search by PREFIX for the company name. If

you look at the company name in the record I found in the first search I see the name is

"The Good Old Days Antique Shop." Since the CO= is phrased indexed, whatever you

enter is literally what it will look for, therefore, I looked for the literal name that appeared

in the first search.

I think the point of this exercise is to show the advantages and disadvantages of having

two ways to search the company name. It helps to have two different ways to search

because it provides more than one way to find what you are looking for. It can save time

and money if you know just what you are looking for, or help expand your search if need

be.

Between 1986 and 2003, research efforts on complementary and alternative medicine

(CAM) were subsidized by the Dutch government. This led to 12 academic theses and a

considerable number of papers in medical journals. In our review, we have summarized

the results of this research, grouped by therapeutic category (that is, acupuncture,

paranormal therapies, naturopathy, manual therapies, homeopathy and anthroposophical

medicine.) Of the 12 theses, four were written in Dutch, three of which were not

subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals, while the fourth, on enzyme therapy,

led to a number of papers in Dutch medical journals. In three instances, mildly positive

findings were reported: on the efficacy of manual therapies, the use of acupuncture

analgesia in surgery, and an elimination diet against migraine and tension headaches.

These positive conclusions can easily be explained by methodological shortcomings (e.g.,

not using credible placebo-control groups); in the other nine theses, the researchers

themselves had drawn negative conclusions. The Dutch government ended its financial

support for CAM research in 2006. ( 79 Refs.)

Paroxysmal exercise-induced dyskinesias (PED) are involuntary intermittent movements

triggered by prolonged physical exertion. Autosomal dominant inheritance may occur.

Recently, mutations in the glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) gene (chr. 1p35-p31.3) have

been identified as a cause in some patients with autosomal dominant PED. Mutations in

this gene have previously been associated with the GLUT1 deficiency syndrome. We

performed mutational analysis in 10 patients with apparently sporadic PED. We

identified two novel GLUT1 mutations, at least one likely to be de-novo, in two of our

patients. Onset was in early childhood. One of our patients had a predating history of

childhood absence epilepsy and a current history of hemiplegic migraine as well as a

family history of migraine. The other patient had no other symptoms apart from PED.

Brain MRI showed cerebellar atrophy in one case. Mutations in GLUT1 are one cause of

apparently sporadic PED. The detection of this has important implications for treatment

as ketogenic diet has been reported to be beneficial. 2009 Movement Disorder Society.

Migraine, particularly migraine with aura, and increased body weight are independent

risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The association of weight change and

clinical markers of CVD risk was evaluated in subjects participating in a randomized

double-blind, parallel-group study of migraine-preventive treatment comparing 100

mg/day of topiramate and amitriptyline. Individuals from both treatment groups were

pooled and stratified into three groups. The 'major weight gain' group gained > or = 5%

of their baseline body weight at the conclusion of the study; the 'major weight loss' group

lost > or = 5% of their baseline body weight. The third group had < 5% of weight change.

The influence of weight change in headache outcomes, as well as in markers of CVD

(blood pressure, cholesterol, C-reactive protein), was assessed using analysis of

covariance. Of 331 subjects, 52 (16%) experienced major weight gain and 56 (17%)

experienced major weight loss. Weight change was not associated with differential

efficacy for the treatment of headache. However, contrasted with those with major weight

loss, those who gained weight experienced elevations in mean diastolic blood pressure

(+2.5 vs. -1.2 mmHg), heart rate (+7.6 vs. -1.3 beats per minute), glycosylated

haemoglobin (+0.09% vs. -0.04%), total cholesterol (+6.4 vs. -6.3 mg/dl), low-density

lipoprotein cholesterol (+7.0 vs. -4.4 mg/dl) and triglycerides (+15.3 vs. -10.4 mg/dl) and

an increase in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (+1.8 vs. -1.9 mg/l). Both groups

experienced decreases in systolic blood pressure (-4.0 vs. -1.3 mmHg) and high-density

lipoprotein cholesterol (-3.7 vs. -0.8 mg/dl). Increased weight during migraine treatment

is not associated with poor headache treatment outcomes, but is associated with

deterioration of CVD risk markers.

VoiceDVD, a wholly owned subsidiary of WENR Corp., and VCA Interactive, a division of VCA Labs Inc., a leading producer of adult entertainment, have developed a voice-controlled DVD player software. VCA is releasing a Beta version of the DVD player on an upcoming title in July. Once testing is completed, the player will be incorporated into an interactive title to be released January 2003. VoiceDVD was created to allow viewers to control their DVD players with voice commands. VoiceDVD licensed the technology from ScreenFriends Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of WENR Corp. VoiceDVD and VCA jointly developed the DVD player software. Initially the VoiceDVD will be sold by VCA, but in the future the technology may be licensed to other studios. Purchasers of upcoming VCA Interactive DVDs will be able to operate the DVD player with voice commands for common functions, such as "play, pause, fast forward, etc." The player will also enable the user to command embedded functionality that will emulate conversing with the actors in the movie, thereby creating a "truly" interactive experience for the users. The software, accessible only through Windows-based computers, will allow users to access functions such as menu items and skipping chapters. Allen Gold, head of VCA Interactive, said the voice recognition software is also being written to understand variations of commands that will take viewers to specific angles, actions and points on the disc. If users' acceptance is positive, VoiceDVD is planning to bring this technology to standard DVD players. "This technology provides the user with a more interactive experience," says Azat Aslanyan, project manager for VoiceDVD. He adds, "They are able to converse with the characters in the movie with their voice rather than the click of the mouse. This gives the user a real feeling of a one-on-one experience."

The fourth record entitled, “Book returned to college library - 144 years overdue” looked

like it might be a match, but I also suspected that it might not be since it was from a

school in Virginia, and not Harvard. I expanded to see the full text and found out it was

not what I wanted. (For the sake of space I did not print the entire article here).

Text: CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A book about the history of England has been returned to Harvard University -- 233 years after it was borrowed. The third volume of A Complete History of England, by Bishop White Kennett, published in 1706 and given to the university in 1709, was out on loan when a fire destroyed almost all of Harvard's collection in 1764.

``We simply don't know where the book was all this time," Harvard spokeswoman Debbie Ruder said. ``But it's definitely Harvard's. You can tell from the flyleaf." During the winter, a bookseller contacted a Harvard professor he knew to be a collector of rare books and offered to sell the calf-bound, five-centimetre-thick folio back to the school. The dean of faculty found an anonymous donor to pay for the volume. The sum was not disclosed and no overdue fines had been collected. The book was one of 404 that escaped a fire that burned Harvard Hall to the ground on Jan. 25, 1764, destroying the rest of the 5,000-volume collection.
