The Term Dialysis:dia, meaning through, lysis, meaning loosening or splitting

Page 3: DIALYSIS

When your kidneys are healthy, they clean your blood. They also make hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy.

Page 4: DIALYSIS

When your kidneys fail, you need treatment to replace the work your kidneys used to do.

Page 5: DIALYSIS

In medicine, dialysis is a process for removing waste and excess water from the blood, and is used to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function in people

Page 6: DIALYSIS

There are two main types of dialysis:

• hemodialysis • peritoneal dialysis.

Both types filter your blood to rid your body of harmful wastes, extra salt and water.

Page 7: DIALYSIS

Hemodialysis does that with a machine.

Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen, called the peritoneal membrane, to filter your blood.

Each type has both risks and benefits. They also require that you follow a special diet.

Dialysis (Summary)

Page 15: DIALYSIS

Dialysis is a process for removing waste and

excess water from the blood, and used primarily to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function in people with renal failure.

What is ‘Dialysis’?

Page 16: DIALYSIS

By dialysis, wastes diffuse out of

the blood, across a partially permeable membrane, into a fluid that is constantly renewed.

In this way urea is removed from the blood without altering any of its features.

When is dialysis required?

Page 19: DIALYSIS

Dr. Willem Kolff, a Dutch physician, constructed

the first working dialyzer in 1943. Due to the scarcity of available resources, Kolff

had to improvise and build the initial machine using:

sausage casings, beverage cans, a washing machine and various other items

that were available at the time.
