CREATED IN 1928 BY DEDICATED ARTISTS OF STATURE FOR THE PROTECTION OFARTISTS' INTERESTS, AND TRADITIONAL REALISM IN AMERICAN ART

THE AMERICAN ARTISTSPROFESSIONAL LEAGUE

In January 1928, F. Ballard Williams, AssistantTreasurer of the National Academy ofDesign in NewYork) called a meeting of fifteen members of theSalmagundi Club. The purpose: to discuss the needfor a national organization to meet the increasinginterests in traditional realism in American art. Mostattending were prominent academicians of their day.The attendees all agreed that an organization designedto protect artists' interests and promote traditionalAmerican art was necessary and The American ArtistsProfessional League (AAPL) was tom.

The AAPL first focused on the issue of obtainingcommissions of official portraits for American Artists+By using its national stature) the AAPL influenced arider to a Congressional Bill stipulating that all officialportraits paid for with taxpayers, dollars were to bepainted by American artists, a fact that remains ineffect to this day+

Another milestone for the organization was theimprovement of the chemical and physical purity ofartists, pigments. By securing a fund from theCamegie Corporation Endowment Fund, a program ofcolor pigment research was established for the AAPL.It was completed in 1932, making the AAPL thecountry,s leading authority on artists, pigments at thattime. The AAPL was also instrumental in establishingand securing the uS. Bureau of Standards original setof govemment~sponsored standards for artists, colors, updated in 1962+

In its ongoing effort to promote and encourage artistsspecializing in realistic art forms, the AAPL has staged aGrandNational Exhibition for over 70 years+ Each year, hundreds ofapplicants from all 50 states in all media sub~mit their work for review by a selection committee con~sisting ofprofessional alfists in the fields ofoil) waterme~dia) pastel and graphics and sculpture.

By Board resolution in 1958, the AAPL createdthe American Artists Fund) an arm of the organiza~lion specifically designed for educational and charita~ble purposes. Through private and corporate dona~lions and contributions to the Fund) the AAPL spon~sols its Grand National Exhibition and awards scho1~arships to college level students studying Americanart. This year, the AAPL will award over $12,000in prizes to exhibitors and has marked $4,000 forcollege scholarships.

The APPL) with approximately 1)000 membersnationwide) is headquartered at the Salmagundi Club,47 Fifth Avenue) New York, New York 10003, Te1/Fax(212) 645~1345.
