Judge Leo Rich DPAGB APAGB EFIAP/g ARPS At Ditton Community Centre. Kiln Barn Road, Ditton. Aylesford. ME20 6AH. 22nd February 2020
Diamond Jubilee Address from Tracy Hughes CPAGB LRPS BPE1* President of Kent County Photographic Association
I would like to welcome you all to the 10th Annual Diamond Jubilee competition. This year we have 34 clubs competing for this trophy along with various other awards and certificates. It is great to see so many of our clubs entering each year. On behalf of the KCPA I would like to welcome our Judge Leo Rich DPAGB APAGB EFIAP/g ARPS to the event. I hope Leo enjoyed the task that was set and I am sure we will enjoy his comments, and any helpful thoughts he may have, to help us improve the images. Congratulations to the winners of the awards, especially to Reflex Photographic Club, and Crayford Camera Club, who will both should they accept the challenge, represent the KCPA at the next PAGB PDI Championships at Warwick in July 2020. Our thanks to Leo for his time and commitment to judging this event for us. I would like to thank all the clubs that entered the competition and everyone that came along to the Diamond Jubilee 2020 event. I hope you have had an enjoyable day and I look forward to seeing you at future KCPA events. Tracy Hughes CPAGB LRPS BPE1* KCPA President
Comments from Leo Rich DPAGB APAGB EFIAP/g ARPS, Diamond Jubilee 2020 Judge
.
On the 31st January 2016 I had the pleasure of taking part in the KCPA Judges Training event. and giving my view on judging and how I see my role as a judge. Almost four years to the day I sat in front of my computer “judging” the work submitted by KCPA clubs for the Diamond Jubilee competition and an enjoyable task it has been. To ensure I treated every image fairly I also took the opportunity to project them and view them as you will see them on the day. During my presentation in 2016 one comment I made was “a judge has to be thick (skinned) as you will never get it right for everyone” and this may well be, in some eyes, true of my selection this year. I never cease to be amazed at the vast variety of subjects photographers find and how many of them find a new angle to subjects which are familiar to us. I wish I had the creative ability that has clearly been shown in this competition resulting in some very fine images achieving a Merit with a few more ‘high scorers’ only just missing the cut. Some people think only prints are “true photography” but, as a former slide worker, I believe a well prepared PDI, projected large, takes a lot of beating. However projection can be the Achilles Heel and some entries, which appeared fine on my monitor, did not fare so well when projected. Whilst we all appear to have learned not to over sharpen our pdi’s a few images did suffer from being either, too contrasty, over saturated, heavily HDR’d or with very wide, white, borders which detracted from the actual image it was surrounding thereby leading to a lower score. I appreciate not all of us have digital projectors but in competitions
attracting high quality images such as the Diamond Jubilee it is very advisable to check them full screen if you can. It really has been a privilege to look at all your work and can say, truthfully, that I am in envy of many of the images I viewed. My congratulations to those who achieved an Award. To those not quite so successful this time I will return to my Judges Training day notes and say “if you have faith in your image use it again in another competition” you might find a more sympathetic (or understanding) judge - good luck and remember that Photography should be FUN! My thanks to KCPA for granting me the opportunity and for your President, Tracy, for being so patient and understanding as I struggled with technology.
