BOARD REPORTLast month was the annual Meeting for our community.

This is the time when committees and board of Directors report on their accomplishments of the past year and, if there is an election, the final votes are cast and the results are announced. This year the two seats which were up were filled by the two candidates who submitted their nomination forms. congratulations to Mike Decicco, for returning and to robin Wetmore for joining the board. it is also time to say thank you to Susan Schmidt for serving on the board and for her many contributions over the past two years.

We would like to review the accomplishments of the board over the last year. One of the promises of this board was to improve transparency and to maintain far greater communication with the residents and the committees. i think this has been accomplished with the monthly board summaries, next month’s “action items” allowing one month for residents to respond to “action items” prior to passage, open explanations at board meetings, and regular joint meetings among committees, management and board. This board is committed to answer and explain our workings and what thinking went into our decisions.

The list of projects that were brought to fruition this past year with more planned, were: the repair of the pool roof, resurfacing the hot tub, the clubhouse chimneys, the replacement of the clubhouse windows, the renovation of the front gate lawn, purchase of new benches for bocce, tennis and around the clubhouse, purchase of new pool furniture, repair of the lobby floor, installation of a sunscreen for the restaurant patio, installation of new lobby

doors which are now handicap accessible, replacing and adding new gym equipment and a new hallway display outside the ballroom.

We also updated parts of the HVac system, and ballroom lighting. a plan was developed to improve the appearance of resident lawns and that program has been undertaken. a new pool company was contracted and a summertime pool manager was hired. This has improved how the pool is operated along with the new wristband process. We revised how to develop our annual budget, we lengthened the years our capital reserves will maintain a suitable level, and instituted a project performance tracking system.

besides the many projects and improving of our financial future, we also saw cost savings this past year. by negotiating with two publishers we obtained a savings of close to $15,000 for the year in the publishing of our bimonthly flyer packets. We revamped our employee medical package and now they contribute to it. The need not to have legal counsel at monthly board meetings has saved the association considerably.

it has been a very busy year, but a very rewarding one. Has everything been accomplished? no, but we will continue to be work on them. Your continued input, involvement and suggestions are always welcomed. The board of Directors is looking forward to more improvements in the year ahead to continue to maintain Greenbriar Oceanaire as the pristine community it is and will always be.

Newsletter CommitteeSally Robinson, Chair

at the annual Membership Meeting on September 23, 2019, The newsletter committee, along with all the other community committees, was asked to present an annual report, outlining briefly what the committee had accomplished since September 2018.

i believe our greatest achievement was in meeting the goals of both our board and the Strategic Planning committee by developing better communication about the greater Waretown community “outside the gates.”

by inviting Ken baulderstone, Deputy Mayor, Michal rogalski, chief of Police, and Sue McDowell, Member of the School board, to write regular columns for The beacon, we have all learned a great deal more about what is going on in our town.

in addition, we continue to print the news from our ever-growing club scene as well as stories written by an increasing number of contributors. We have stretched our publication to its limit!

We thank all our contributors and the wonderful photographers who submit beautiful pictures of our gorgeous community.

news from the Library Subcommittee

Our September Library Open House provided an opportunity to rediscover our Library and encouraged many residents to donate a book or two while borrowing those that captured their interest! a terrific group of volunteers led by Mickey Derosa, benita cardaccio and Karen elKoury, have organized our collection, including some great donations by our residents. The committee will continue to monitor the library, re-shelving books, and discussing new events such as a special display of books outside the exercise room for those who like to read while using the treadmill, etc. and perhaps a series of “book chats,” held in the library. We may also institute a column of book reviews for The beacon. Stayed tuned!

Soon applications for Committees will be available for our residents. The newsletter Committee is seeking applicants for proof readers, writer of The Culinary Corner, and other committee positions. Copies of job descriptions are available; contact Sally Robinson at [email protected].

Postherpetic Neuralgia is the most common complication from shingles. Shingles is caused by the Herpes Zoster Virus. When an individual is infected and develops Herpes, the virus never leaves that body. Instead it lays quiet in the nerve endings. During periods of stress or when your immune system is lower, the virus reactivates causing a rash that consists of blisters. These typically scab over in 7 to 10 days and clear up within 2 to 4 weeks. Often this is associated with pain, often described as an intense burning sensation. For some people, the pain can last for months or even years after the rash goes away. This long-lasting pain is called Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN).

How Can Postherpetic Neuralgia Be Prevented?

Your best option to prevent shingles and PHN is to get vaccinated. It is recommended that individuals over the age of 50 get vaccinated. Your primary care doctor can provide you more information regarding getting the vaccine and which one is right for you. If you already are suffering from shingles/PHN, there are other options to treat your pain.

How Is Postherpetic Neuralgia Treated?

Medications:The most common medications given for PHN are nerve pain medications like Lyrica and Neurontin. Occasionally, individuals may also need opioid pain medication to deal with some of the discomfort however this is based on the individual.

Interventions:There are simple injections that can be done targeting the nerves where the virus lives. The medicine being injected is numbing medicine and steroids which help calm the nerve down. Often, patients feel better after just a single injection but it can take up to 2-3 injections to make the pain significantly better. For patients who fail to get significant relief from the combination of medications and simple injections, Neuromodulation is utilized.Neuromodulation is the use of electricity to prevent the nerves from sending pain signals, essentially hiding your pain. This can be done in a variety of way including targeting the spinal cord or the individual nerves directly.

If you are suffering from PHN, please do not hesitate to contact the board certified pain physicians at Garden State Medical Center to help quickly and accurately diagnose your condition and get you back on track to living a better pain free life!

Facilities CommitteeWritten by Ralph dawes

- Shade system installed in area outside Maggie’s, making outside dining more comfortable during those warm summer nights. Thanks to Tom Flanders for taking the lead with Dennis in getting this installed.

- The inlay wood in our lobby floor was refinished. This is the first phase in updating our lobby floor. The next step will be to replace the wood surrounding the ceramic tile floor. Our plan is to replace this wood with riverwood Walnut ceramic tiles, the same tiles installed outside our billiard room.

- Our fitness center has seen updated equipment, with new treadmill and chest press machine. it’s great to see this center being used so much.

- repair of the chimneys completed, on schedule. Thanks to Jim ritter for the leadership with this project.

- Window replacement project is complete. The new windows are a great improvement over original and will give us many years of draft-free comfort.

The carpeting in the many areas of the clubhouse has become worn, with seams creating tripping hazard in our card and meeting rooms. early in the summer, we sent out request for Proposal to several companies; three responded. The work has been awarded to avalon, as low bidder and highest quality. i’m excited about this project, and want to thank the design team and our board members for the many hours spent to come up with a pattern and color scheme that compliments our clubhouse colors and decor.

The broadloom carpet field and border will be on display in our clubhouse:

bOrDer FieLD

Lastly, our team has submitted our project outlook for 2020. These projects will be prioritized with other work planned for next year and once the board approves, we’ll start planning for next year.

as we come to the end of our summer, i want to thank Dennis, his team and Janine for all that they do to keep our clubhouse and surrounding facilities in tip top shape including daily duties to cleaning the tennis courts, filling water containers, to quickly responding in support of events.

Over the past several weeks, a number of updates to our facilities have been done:

Fire Safety Committeeby: Jim Pasquariello, Co-Chair

Since 1922, the national Fire Protection agency (nFPa) has sponsored the observance of Fire Prevention Week. it is observed each year during the week of October 9th.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is “nOT eVerY HerO WearS a caPe, PLan anD PracTice YOUr eScaPe.” The purpose being to educate everyone about the important actions they can take to keep them safe in case of a fire in their home.

in a typical fire, you may have as little as 1 or 2 minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. escape planning can help you make the most of the time you have.

Smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death in a fire. Make sure yours are working by testing them once a month.

establish your plan. Go to each room and point to the two ways out. Practice what to do if there is smoke; get low and go, get out fast. Practice using different ways out and closing doors behind you as you leave. it is advised by the nFPa that you never go back in for people, for pets or things. establish an outdoor meeting place and go to that place. call 911 on your cell phone or a neighbor’s phone. remember to practice your plan at least twice annually.

Hopefully, you will never have to use your escape plan, but being prepared can make the difference. remember, be aware, be prepared and be safe. We hope you have a wonderful, safe fall season.

October has arrived, ushering in the quiet beauty of fall. Long ago, the poet John Keats so aptly described autumn as, “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.” We Greenbriar residents are so blessed to be surrounded by Mother nature at her finest. Our trees and gardens are brightly arrayed in varying shades of red, amber and gold. The days are cool and crisp, perfect for us to enjoy the bountiful harvest of apples and pumpkins ripe for the picking. We await the coming of Halloween with all of its traditional festivities.

along with Maggie’s and the Pub, our sparkling, refreshing outdoor pool and its spacious deck contribute to our wonderful, inviting lifestyle. This past summer, our pool experience became extra special with the addition of our newest amenity: Sunday Outside Bar. The response was overwhelmingly positive. beginning July 14th and running until our closing pool day (September 15th), residents and their guests enjoyed their favorite beverages, paired with Gina’s mouth-watering barbeque fare.

as always, Maggie’s menu is constantly updated, with additional new favorites per residents’ requests. The Pub continues to add more wines available by the glass and bottle. The latest amenity is the rotating tap of seasonal beers. Just an Fyi: Greenbriar logo glasses are being replaced with plain ones because, unfortunately, many continue to “disappear.”

Looking back, august and September provided many fun-filled activities and events. Night Club Night on august 16th was a tremendous success. The laughter never stopped as comedian Mike Marino entertained our residents. He was followed by Gerard esposito, an extremely popular performer, who had everyone singing and dancing throughout the ballroom. residents toasted the end of summer in record numbers at our last Happy Hours by the Pool. Maggie’s served 245 dinners! it was standing room only as dancers and singers celebrated under the stars.

Our talented Oceanaire Players returned September 6th and 7th, treating us to a “Who Done it?” musical comedy entitled Mayhem in the Theatre. We enjoyed an evening filled with laughs, song, dance and drama. On September 19th, Josh Duyal and bob cotroneo returned with their season finale to once again enhance our dining pleasure at Maggie’s.

Dancing Dream, an abba tribute band, on September 24th was so popular that an additional matinee performance was added to accommodate the huge waiting list. Seasoned musicians and talented lead singers took us on a nostalgic trip back to the glitz and glamour of the 70’s. Our final event of the month was a visit to Resorts AC on September 29th to see Michael McGeehan’s power vocals in his new, fun, lively, interactive show.

The lottery for our new Year’s eve Gala took place on September 11th, three weeks earlier than last year. Tables with fewer than 10 people were matched with other tables. as each table was called, the occupants picked out their desired table location. There were 256 residents accommodated.

Looking ahead, our ever-popular Karaoke Tuesday at the Pub, accompanied by Maggie’s Pub menu, returns October 22nd. Our annual Family costume Halloween Party on Sunday, October 27th will feature a costume party, magic balloons, face painting, dancing and entertainment.

Last, but not least, we want to express our heartfelt congratulations to club House Director alicia campbell on the birth of her son, Harrison Wesley, and to assistant Director Kimmy Mackie on the birth of her son, Thomas charles. We also want to recognize our concierge staff: Maegan Hogan, Liz Ostergren, edris Forde and evan Garazair, for keeping things running so smoothly while shorthanded this busy summer.

Roards and Grounds CommitteeWritten by Robin Wetmore

What is on the tractor trailer you might ask? That is 25,000 pounds of grass seed that was applied to our lawns and common grounds last month! as part of the aeration and over seeding project soil amendments were also applied.. This month a fall fertilizer will be applied to our lawns and common areas. and now it's time to say goodbye to all our beautiful summer flowers and hello to our fall decorations, mums, pumpkins and a ghost or two.

another sign of fall is the annual trimming of the basins around our community. Here at Greenbriar Oceanaire, we have 28 ponds and basins (10 ponds and 18 detention basins). They form a network of protection, by handling our stormwater and pollutants by directing one to another throughout our neighborhood. Since we are in the barnegat bay watershed, the basins and ponds have a direct role in not only protecting us from floods, but they also protect our bay from pollution. The roads and Grounds committee will be making their fall tour of the ponds and basins in november.

as you are doing your own fall cleanup in your planting beds and tree rings please do not throw the pulled weeds on to your lawn. Fallen leaves can be blown out in to the grass to be picked up as your lawn is mowed. also, many of us will be scheduling the shut down of our irrigation systems, this is a good time to talk with your irrigation company about any necessary maintenance and repairs your system may need.

“Prepare for Autumn with some Driving Safety Tips”

although the temperatures have still been high in the Ocean county area, the fall season is upon us. in fact, pumpkin spice everything started rolling out in stores and restaurants in the beginning of September. My favorite time of year, Fall, officially started on September 23rd so let’s take a proactive look to best avoid unnecessary issues. This month we will address some traffic safety tips for the autumn season.

- When leaves accumulate on the roadway and become wet, they can get extremely slippery, making the driving conditions similar to driving on ice.

- if the temperature drops below freezing, the wet leaves will freeze and turn into dangerous icy leaves on the roadway. besides reducing the car's traction, causing skidding and the possibility of losing control of the vehicle, leaves often cover the painted road markings, making it difficult to know the locations of the lanes.

- Drivers need to slow down if you are driving on a road covered with leaves, especially when driving around turns.

- allow yourself plenty of room to stop in an emergency by keeping a greater distance between you and the car in front of you.

- a pile of leaves raked to the side of the road is an inviting place to a child. children enjoy jumping into the leaf piles or burrowing down into them and hiding. never drive through a leaf pile. Use caution going around turns and where children are playing.

- Keep your windshield leaf free to avoid wet leaves getting stuck under the windshield wiper blades.

- in order to avoid the possibility of a fire hazard from the exhaust system or catalytic converter, never park your vehicle over a pile of leaves.

- be careful on bridges. as the temperature begins to drop, morning frost can leave icy patches on bridges, overpasses and shaded spots on the road.

- Watch out for deer. autumn marks the beginning of deer breeding season and they will be more active in areas near the road. Deer are most active during sunset and sunrise so be extra watchful when driving along wooded roadways.

“by the numbers”beginning this month i will begin posting statistical

information which references the police responses within the Greenbriar Oceanaire community. Monthly you will see information concerning the “Type of call” officers responded to and the amount of times officers responded to that particular type of call.

“Let all who gather together

leave as friends.”

“Grab a grass skirt and your dancing shoes and hula on down to the Women’s club Luau” …and that’s exactly what our members did on august 22nd. Lack of air conditioning did not hinder the fun atmosphere. Members were welcomed with flower leis as well as flowers for their hair. Our members got right into the tropical spirit and many were dressed in grass skirts, coconut shells and floral island attire. The ballroom was adorned in a tropical theme and was accompanied by a Polynesian menu. Limbo and Hula Hoop contests were enjoyed by all. To keep everyone dancing, entertainment was provided by bob Kulik of The Happening. it was a Luau to remember and a fun evening was had by all!!!

On august 31st the Men’s club held its annual end of Summer bbQ blast. it is known as the Patriots Day block Party and was attended by 163 members, spouses and guests. Hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, sausage and peppers, chicken breast and Jack Daniels bbQ ribs were the menu items. Fixins’, including coleslaw, macaroni and potato salads were available, and to top everything off, watermelon and cookies were served for dessert.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by The Wild rose band who kept everyone dancing with tunes from the Greenbriar generation era – The Fifties. Group dances like the electric slide and Sweet caroline were big dance favorites. The dance floor was crowded with many of our friends. Photos of this event can be seen included with this article, as well as on the Men’s club website by clicking on photos.

During the show, the Men’s club annual raffle was drawn and five prizes ranging from $1000 to $125 were awarded. congratulations to all the winners:

The Wild Rose Band The Electric Slide

The annual raffle is a major fundraiser for the Men’s club. The monies it generates are donated to military, civil and local charities, as well as enabling the club to supply two local food banks run by St. Mary’s and St. Stephen's churches. Hope to see your participation next year for our 2020 annual raffle.

Our next upcoming program is the "Shades of buble" show on October 5th. This is a tribute band to Michael buble and tickets are still available. For last minute ticket purchases, please contact charlie Haberman at 609- 756-0080.

Written by diane Hagal and dolores WojcikDo Nothing…But Have Fun!!!Taking advantage of a beautiful summer evening,

our first adventure of the month was the Miss barnegat Light cruise. We sailed past the lighthouse on barnegat bay and into the atlantic Ocean. a few of us stood up, raised our arms and sang “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme from the Titanic movie. Fortunately, unlike the Titanic, we returned to land. Prior to boarding, we had lunch at Kelly’s Old barney restaurant and took some time strolling around the shops in Viking Village.

next was a rerun of our popular bunco and Pizza night. This type of activity is always a hit because weather doesn’t matter. We met in the clubhouse card room, where we wined and dined on naples pizza. Then we began to try our skills at rolling dice, hoping to fill our cards with buncos or at least wins. This can be an exercise in futility, but it is fun to hope and dream.

not to be deterred by weather, our plan was to have another al fresco dining date, however, Mother nature was not cooperative. We went with Plan b, which was indoor dining at Lefty’s. everyone seemed content with the change.

Our next luncheon did allow us our outdoor dining experience at captain’s inn Tiki bar, a Do nothing club favorite. actually, as long as any venue has food and drink, it becomes one of our favorite places.

The “beach Monday” outing were a success with 3 out of 4 beautiful beach days.

With summer coming to an end, we have already made various plans for the fall. if you want to be a part of these plans, join us at our next meeting. You will be among the first to know what is going on and will not be at risk of being shut out of an activity that may have sparked your interest. in fact, by attending the meetings, you get to voice your opinion and/or ideas of things to do. after all, we are not really “Do nothings” but we do “Do nothing but have Fun.”

Our meetings are on the third Tuesday of every month. Our next meeting will be at 2:00 PM on October 15th in the clubhouse, second floor, west wing card room. For more information, call Dolores Wojcik at 609-693-0778, [email protected]

SOLO CLUBWritten by Joan Sohmer • Photos by Joan Sohmer and Noreen McGowan

The good news is we escaped (actually we were released) and this writer is here to tell the tale. On august 15th, ten brave Solo club members ventured into The escape room in Toms river. We did not know what awaited us. We were happy to find a spacious, two room, non-threatening setting. We had one hour to solve the puzzle -- what had happened to the family who lived in these rooms -- by deciphering very obscure clues. even after receiving further clues during the hour, it’s sad to say we failed – but we did have a great time trying! Upon our release, we were given an explanation of the events leading up to the family’s abrupt disappearance. We were happy to see a lobby sign stating that only 30% of players solve the mystery of Summerfield Place. This is definitely a fun challenge that we will probably try again in the future, in a different setting.

after our release, the group enjoyed cocktails and dinner at Mcintyre’s Pub, which was located in the same strip mall. Good food, good friends and a day filled with laughter. What more could one wish for?

On august 29th, club members gathered at The captain’s inn for another of our very popular happy hour get-togethers. Drinks and appetizers were enjoyed by the group, along with pleasant conversation and comradery. it’s always fun to see friends in such a casual, come if you can, scenario. We look forward to sharing many more happy hours together.

The club’s September meeting was followed by dinner at biaggio’s. eighteen members enjoyed a delicious dinner and, once again, each other’s company.

September 8 brought the Solo club’s "members only" bocce tournament. The weatherman blessed us with a beautiful sunny afternoon. Six teams, randomly selected, took to our three bocce courts for the friendly competition. Players ranged from novices who had never played to those more experienced members of the Greenbriar bocce League. The games were great fun. after bocce, participants enjoyed pizza and soda.

Prizes were awarded to the first-place winning team as well as to the two teams who tied for second place. We look forward to another bocce tournament next year.

a very special thank you to Gary Kuykendall for all of his work readying the courts for us, assistance in planning and making sure we got off on the right foot.

Thank you to all who worked to make this month’s events happen – Marilyn Hess, noreen McGowan, Joan Sohmer, Pat Farace and roberta Warshaw.

The board is currently working on plans for the festive holiday season, including our annual gifts for forgotten nursing home patients. carmela Miele, who has done a wonderful job in the past, will again chair this program.

We cordially invite all solo residents to consider joining our club. Dues are $5.00. Your check, payable to Solo club, may be placed in the Solo club lobby mailbox.

if you have any questions about the Solo club, please contact Marilyn Hess, President, 609-242-5633, [email protected].

The newcomers club board is very pleased to have pictures of the Woodstock event in the centerfold of the beacon this month. So many people have commented and told us how they loved this 50th anniversary event and the innovative way it was presented.

it was a rekindling of old memories that so many of us cherish. although the Woodstock timeframe was a tumultuous period, with the Vietnam War and many other social issues, the recollections of this gathering, where peace and love helped replace the volatility and inhibitions of the day, filled this evening’s festivities.

Woodstock was representative of how The newcomers club plans events and the time and effort expended to make them a success.

as our September games were played, we added extra layers of clothing, and were able to look back on a fun season of golf. There were 24 Thursdays in 2019 when the ladies played a variety of games.

There were three Pre-season scrambles, and two nine & Wine events, with wine courtesy of billy casper. (The last one will be October 10, with a 1 pm tee time. be sure to sign up and drop off your $16 check for appetizers). The popular monthly Scrambles, followed by luncheons, were enjoyed by so many. There were 14 weeks with unique formats, and one cannot forget the amazing fundraiser for Providence House.

if you are new to Greenbriar or new to the game of golf, you must be impressed with what the volunteer OWGa board has created and implemented for the pleasure of our women golfers. and, you must also be impressed with the natural beauty surrounding you as you play our course. We are very fortunate, indeed.

Botanical Jewelry Delights the GardenairesWritten by Judy Sylvester/Photos by Tom Vosseler

President emily McLaughlin welcomed the members to the September meeting. announcements included information on the random acts of Gardening. More than 100 nominations were received over the summer. Judy Leale, special projects chair, will make a presentation at the October meeting. information on the Morven/nassau inn trip on September 23 was reviewed. cheryl Zanetti, Vice-President for beautification, thanked all the summer volunteers for their hard work at the back-gate gardens and the bocce courts. Fall volunteers will soon be needed for October and november. Joyce Locascio gave information on the annual Lbi Garden club Holiday House Tour. Tickets are $55.00 each and must be purchased at the October meeting.

Vice-president for Programs, Debbie Zelechoski, then introduced Linda Williams, creator of botanical jewelry. Linda is 1st vice-president of her garden club and a past president. She is an accredited flower show judge. Linda also makes beaded jewelry and learned her craft through classes at Michael's. She also discovered botanical jewelry and eight years ago made her first necklace for the new Jersey Flower Show. She uses material from her kitchen and from items she collects on nature walks. She displayed her jewelry samples, but also used a PowerPoint program to enlarge them for all the members to see. She usually presents in much smaller venues and was amazed at the attendance for the meeting.

Linda finds some items in her kitchen: seeds from fruit, beans, soup mix, corn husks, pits from fruit, peppercorns, orange peel, rinds, and lentils. From nature she gathers: onion skins, vinca vine, lichen, pine cones, grasses, paper birch bark, leaves, berries, nuts, raffia, birch twigs, grape vine, and vegetable seeds. She uses magnolia, holly, ivy, and witch hazel leaves. She likes clementine peel as it requires little cleaning and curls easily when drying.

To create her designs, Linda uses elmers glue, e6000 epoxy, cuticle scissors, paint brushes, nail polish, silica gel, tweezers, toothpicks, Q-tips, nail polish remover pads, and a Dremel drill. Her process involves drying the materials, cleaning them, and then painting the components. The items are primed before painting so the paint covers more completely. To make the complex chains for the necklaces, she wraps the vines around dowels of different sizes so they curl. This is very painstaking work and the resulting chains are delicate. Making botanical jewelry is really an art and most is not wearable due to the fragility of the pieces.

Linda’s slides were of pieces she has made for flower shows and those she has been given by women who created pieces and did not wish to keep them. The types of jewelry created for the flower shows are necklaces, earrings, belt buckles, bracelets, and pins. Only the pins could be worn. Linda is a judge at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Judges look for scale and proportion when judging a piece. if the chain is too delicate for the items placed on it, the judges would take that into consideration. no glitter is allowed on the pieces and would disqualify them. even the clasps or toggles used must be created from natural elements.

There are also books available on making botanical jewelry. Some recommend using bones in the creations, but Linda chooses not to do that.

Following Linda’s presentation, three members were awarded the door prizes, emily recognized the bakers for the meeting, and ended with a poem about autumn. The bakers were Gail blake, Patti Dicarlo, ann Dicker, Mary beth Higham, Sue Holowiak, emily McLaughlin, barbara Meidling, and Sue rich. next meeting is October 8.

On September 12 the israeli Heritage club hosted a sold-out trip to view a groundbreaking exhibit at the Museum of Jewish History -- "Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away." This traveling exhibition is dedicated to the historical significance of the camp. after a successful showing in Madrid, new York is its first stop on a tour of american cities.

The exhibition brings together more than 700 original objects and 400 photographs from over 20 institutions and museums around the world. "Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away." is the most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the history of Auschwitz and its role in the Holocaust ever presented in north america. it is unparalleled opportunity to confront the singular face of human evil—one that arose not long ago and not far away.

This exhibit traces the development of nazi ideology and tells the transformation of auschwitz from an ordinary Polish town known as Oświęcim to the most significant nazi site of the Holocaust—at which approximately 1 million Jews, and tens of thousands of others were murdered. Victims included Polish political prisoners, Sinti and roma, Soviet POWs, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and those the nazis deemed “homosexual,” “disabled,” “criminal,” “inferior,” or adversarial in countless other ways. in addition, the exhibition contains artifacts that depict the world of the perpetrators—SS men who created and operated the largest of the German nazi concentration and extermination camps.

"Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away." was conceived of by Musealia and the auschwitz-birkenau State Museum and curated by an international panel of experts, including world-renowned scholars Dr. robert Jan van Pelt, Dr. Michael berenbaum, and Paul Salmons, in an unprecedented collaboration with historians and curators at the research center at the auschwitz-birkenau State Museum, led by Dr. Piotr Setkiewicz.

The exhibition features artifacts and materials—never before seen in north america—on loan from more than 20 institutions and private collections around the world. in addition to the auschwitz-birkenau State Museum and the Museum of Jewish Heritage – a Living Memorial to the Holocaust, participating institutions include Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, anne Frank House in amsterdam, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, auschwitz Jewish center in Oświęcim, the Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen in Oranienburg, and the Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust and Genocide in London.

Following an educational and poignant museum visit, the group was whisked off to east brunswick, where we enjoyed a deli luncheon at Lox, Stock and Deli. after lunch, our bus headed home to Waretown, giving all an opportunity to reflect on a very special experience.

We thank Gail bialos and roberta Warshaw for all their efforts in arranging the day.

Waiting for our docent.

GO CAR SHOWAugust 5th Car Show a HUGE Success

by Ray koziol

another year, another car show and the GO car club breaks another record! With great weather, lots of planning and our enthusiastic membership, this year’s show attracted 170 cars.

Our day started early, with club members arriving at 7:30am to begin setup. Soon after 9:00am our first car arrived, a beautiful Jaguar sedan. at that point, our Heritage circle traffic crew and our driveway registration crews deployed to begin the entrance process. Once a show car cleared our registration area, they were directed to our resident “traffic cop,” Sal De crescenzi and his dedicated staff for parking. Processing and parking 170 cars is no easy task, but these guys made it look easy and many of our attendees took notice, offering their thanks.

So how about the cars, you say. Well, our own Mike brown once again was instrumental in securing over 20 of his fellow members from the british car club to attend. Jaguars, MG’s, Triumphs and aston Martins were all represented. So large was the british contingent that next year we may have to start serving afternoon tea! The classics were not overlooked either. in addition to a beautiful cord and Franklin, we were graced with the company of Kevin Peach who brought 2 of his classic Packards. also, ed Gorcek arrived in style with his 1909 cadillac. always a great hit, they eagerly answered questions about the car while dressed in 1900’s attire. italy was also represented with 2 spectacular Ferraris on the show field; and if you’re into sports cars….well, we had about 30 corvettes of all vintages on display. now, if you’re like me, 50’s & 60’s metal is what makes your heart race and we had plenty of examples on hand to please the eye. not to be outdone by all the beautiful cars, we were also treated to a visit by the nJ Heritage center and one of their beautifully restored buses. Their past displays have always attracted crowds and this year was no exception.

normally it’s a 2 bus display, but this year a number of their busses are out on movie/TV shoots, some working on a remake of "Saturday night" and others working on a Soprano’s remake. Our thanks go out to Harry Scalea who is a member of the Heritage center and a Greenbriar resident. Through Harry’s efforts, we have been able to partner with the Heritage group and have their buses on display. Thanks also have to go out to the Ocean Township Police department and the Waretown First aid Squad, who also attended the show.

i believe what makes our shows so great is the variety and quality of the vehicles we attract. Looking across the show field, visitors were treated to multiple decades of classic automobiles ranging from the early 1900’s right up to modern day exotics and all years in between. if you had questions, every owner was eager to answer them, but be forewarned, their enthusiasm is catching!

it is without question that Frank Fontana, John Fascia & Sal De crescenzi and their crew did an outstanding job in putting this show together. We look forward to making next year’s show even better!

a video of the show and the after show party was shot by John Fascia and Frank Fontana. You can view at: https://youtube/_Lur8Myuw30

august 23 was a cool Friday morning that threatened rain. However, this was a welcome respite from the hot steamy weather the Jersey Shore had been experiencing. Twenty excited Greenbriar residents met at the clubhouse parking lot that gray morning to carpool to island beach State Park for a three-hour kayak tour. This was the second such kayaking trip to ibSP, as the first one was so well-received by the attendees. There were both familiar and new faces in the group.

Upon our arrival, we were given a short introduction to basic kayaking by our knowledgeable guides, elaine, Joanie and Lynn. after that, everyone quickly donned life vests and partnered up. We then, as gracefully as we could, climbed aboard our kayaks and headed out to observe some of the natural areas on the bayside of island beach State Park.

We learned about the history of ibSP and what is being done to protect this nature’s wonderland for generations to come. We experienced the unique environment, the unusual plant species (including two edible varieties which several of our braver kayakers tasted) and the

many strange creatures that make their home there. There were ospreys in their nests and mussels growing on seagrass everywhere we looked. The good-natured and patient naturalists that lead our expedition shared their knowledge and passion for this Ocean county treasure located just about 30 miles from Greenbriar.

if you would like to participate in an adventure such as ours, but worry that you don’t possess kayaking skills, fear not! We were a mix of experienced and novice kayakers. all you need is an adventurous spirit, a willingness to get your feet wet, and the ability to laugh at yourself as there was some inadvertent splashing and bumping of kayaks. Perhaps there was even a capsizing of a kayak...but no harm was done other than some wet “Gotchi”!

Once back on dry land, some of us changed into dry clothes and met for lunch at bum rogers in South Seaside Park. The rain held off long enough for us to enjoy food, drinks and good conversation on the outdoor patio. new friendships were made and old friendship renewed as we all agreed a good time was had by all!

October is National Friends of the library monthWritten by Judy Sylvester

Those of us who live in Ocean county are blessed with a nationally recognized and award- winning library system. Our taxes support our library system and the many services it provides offer us a real return on our investment. in addition to the physical buildings where we can go to obtain books, magazines, cDs, DVDs, use computers, read newspapers, and access reference materials, the library offers an abundance of other services. by supporting libraries with their fundraising and advocacy, the Friends of the Library help our libraries to continue to grow and evolve. each library branch has a Friends group. These groups raise funds through membership drives, fundraising events such as Psychic Fairs, bling Sales, author events, luncheons, and book sales. Locally, the Friends groups provide programs, supplies for projects, sponsor Mah Jongg afternoons, and support programs and activities for children.

Here in Waretown, Friends members from Greenbriar helped start the active Mah Jongg program on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4. They also process and staff The book Stop, the used book store whose monthly sales account for over 50% of the Friends annual revenue. Greenbriar residents also served as table hostesses for our successful Victorian Tea fundraiser last October. The Friends sponsored a library card drive with WeS and PriFF last fall that resulted in 130 new card applicants. One name from each school was drawn from those applicants and the two children each received a Kindle Fire purchased by the Friends. each summer the Summer reading program attracts children, teens, and adults. The Friends provide the funds for three baskets for the drawing at the end of the program. Last June, the Friends provided a summer reading book for the 17 children at Priff who participated in the library sponsored book clubs at the school. We also funded baskets for the Wine Festival and Founder’s Day events. anyone who showed their OcL library card, or applied for a new card, was eligible to enter the drawing.

So, what else does our library do for us? The library provides free streaming films using Kanopy, which is accessible using your library card. Libby, another digital service provides ebooks, Hoopla is another digital service to check on, and rbDigital provides magazines and audio books. all of these services are free with our tax-payer dollars. Sparks Lab, located in Toms river, teaches patrons how to use 3D printers, a cricut machine, button makers, and more. Universal class, accessible with your library card, has lessons in so many fields of learning.

can’t get to the library? There is a free service for the homebound provided by the library. a local volunteer will visit and bring the books you like or request directly to your home. The mobile service visits the many assisted living facilities in Ocean county.

new this fall is the Museum Pass Program. Through the OcL website, www.oceancountylibrary.org, patrons can see the list of participating museums and find the directions on the process of obtaining the passes.

Don’t forget the author visits. alice Hoffman was hosted by OcL on September 14 for a free talk and book signing. Lisa Scottoline will be there on november 15 for a talk and book signing. This is a fundraiser for the OcL Friends and will cost $30.00. registration begins at local branches on October 1st. a copy of Lisa’s new book is included in the fee. Your library card is your ticket to all the libraries offer. if you don’t have one, visit your library now!

“Fall” Into Good HealthThe autumnal equinox occurred on Monday, Sept. 23rd at 3:50aM. Frosty mornings and earlier sunsets are

the norm. The month of October is filled with programs, events, a flu clinic and a Medicare 2020 update all geared to keeping you healthy and informed. Please see the flyers, posters and the Health & Fitness club website for sign-ups, our sponsors and more.

http://www.gocassociation.com/clubs/health__fitness_clubAnniversary Party/Fundraiser/Shorty Long & the Jersey Horns Concert – Oct. 31The Health & Fitness club’s biG event of the Year will be the Shorty Long & Jersey Horns concert and our

“Project aware” Fundraiser. This is the second year that we will donate to an excellent immersive drug awareness program for 6th graders.

if you can’t make the concert, please consider making a tax deductible charitable donation to: Southern Ocean Medical Center Foundation/Project Aware and place it the Health & Fitness Club mailbox by Oct. 25. all checks will be presented to Project aware at the concert.

Let’s show that Greenbriar Oceanaire cares about its neighbors and is doing something to stop the epidemic of addiction and death.

Corn Hole anyone? it’s not too cold to get out and enjoy a game with friends. The sets are located in the tall bin at the bocce courts. Paver markers have been placed in the ground in front of the back tennis courts and alongside the last bocce court for the back legs of each board. information cards can be found in the bin.

Spotlight on the Fitness Center: For the next several months the club will focus on one aspect of the fitness center.

beginning this month, we’ll look at the cardiovascular equipment. There are 3 elliptical machines, 1 rower, 2 recumbent bikes, 3 upright bikes and 5 treadmills. research and experts indicate that regular cardio exercise can strengthen the heart, lower resting heart rate, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, help weight management, increase lung capacity and decrease stress. Of course, consult your physician prior to beginning, but let’s get moving!

Orientation Session #4: nate and Matt from “Weights on Wheels” will be here on Sat. Oct. 19 from 10-2. Open to all residents. Please come by and have your questions answered. They will demo proper usage of the equipment. We hope the board will continue this program in 2020 with six sessions

Coming soon: Our leadership team is working with novacare, one of our club’s sponsors, about the possibility of bringing a movement screening and evaluation process to Greenbriar Oceanaire. This type of movement screening analyzes a person’s

fundamental movement patterns to observe mobility and stability deficits. additional strength and flexibility testing is also included to identify common problem areas. The performance evaluation identifies movement limitations and dysfunction, reduces the risk of injury and can improve efficiency and performance. each participant receives a detailed report and customized corrective exercise program.

Vaccines for 50 and over (us youngsters): Discuss these with your doctor: 1. influenza vaccine2. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PVc13) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23)3. On november 6, a General Meeting is scheduled for all members in our ballroom at 7pm. Following a brief business meeting, we are happy to host rev. Frank Watson, Pastor of christ Lutheran church in Whiting and co-author of “Massacre at Duffy’s cut,” which tells the true story of fifty-seven irish immigrant laborers who arrived in the port of Philadelphia in June 1832 to work on Pennsylvania's Philadelphia and columbia railroad and perished within six weeks.

For more than 180 years, the railroad maintained that cholera was to blame, but in a harrowing modern-day excavation of their mass grave, authors and research leaders Dr. J. Francis Watson and his brother Dr. William Watson reveal the tragedy, mystery and discovery of what really happened at Duffy's cut.

Pastor Watson will give a presentation and book signing. Some copies of the book will be available for purchase that evening, or you can be sure of securing a copy by purchasing in advance through amazon, barnes & noble, or The History Press.

By Jo Meinhart

Harry was born and grew up in newark, nJ. When Harry was only nine, he entered a drawing contest sponsored by nesbitt, winning fifty dollars for his portrayal of a hula girl shaped like a nesbitt bottle. also at nine, Harry acquired his first drum set and as a teenager began playing in a band called the Three aces, later joining a quartet. “i play only jazz and have enjoyed playing for over 30 years,” Harry stated. as a high schooler, Harry had a severe accident while playing stick ball, and ruptured his spleen. He was in the hospital for six months recovering. From this accident, Harry was prone to severe infections and after enlisting in the army, was medically discharged after eleven months.

after leaving the service, his career began when he went to work for Public Transit of nJ as a bus operator. He did this for twenty-one years before becoming an instructor. He eventually became a staff instructor and finally chief instructor for the remaining twenty-four years of his career. as chief instructor, Harry was presented with an unusual request from David Letterman. Dave wanted to learn how to drive a bus. Mr. Letterman attended a four-hour class taught by Harry. Later, David was taken to Giant’s Stadium parking lot to practice driving. Harry stated proudly, “Mr. Letterman shared clips from his day of training during one of his nightly monologues.”

Harry’s most memorable moment was the result of a near catastrophe. Harry and a co-worker were driving to work one morning when they encountered a school bus stranded in the middle lane of a highway. Smoke was pouring out of its engine. a frantic woman bus driver stood screaming for help while cars whizzed by her without stopping. The men ran to the bus, opened the rear door, and assisting seven paraplegic children to safety. Harry explained, “Many of the children were in

wheelchairs. We carried each one out while also managing traffic. When the

police finally arrived, the bus exploded. We never gave our names but some observer noticed a logo on the car and tracked us down.” Harry received a resolution of appreciation for his heroic act of kindness. Harry is pictured here with his treasured award.

Harry was also responsible for training twenty-five hundred operators in passenger relations. The purpose of this training was to provide sensitivity training for bus drivers towards the passengers they transported. Harry was quoted in the new York Times in 1987. “There are a lot of pressures that come to bear and it’s easy to become short tempered, because after all, drivers are only human.”

Harry retired in 1999 and he and his wife, Linda, found their way to GO. “When we drove through the front gate we knew this was going to be our home.” Since arriving here, Harry was on the tennis team (when there were only thirteen of them). He took up golfing and made a hole in one on the Forge Pond Golf course in brick. Harry was responsible for providing antique buses for the car show the past three years. “People remember putting in their seven cents for a ride on the bus and got a kick out of seeing what they used to ride in.”

Harry and Linda have been married for thirty-nine years. They have three children, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Harry continues his love of drawing and the couple also enjoy traveling. They go to aruba every year in September and are planning their thirty-second cruise in January.

DID

YOUKNOW Submitted by Gerri Woodruff

ah! October. The month of apple picking, hayrides and things that go bump in the night.Speaking of things that go bump in the night, did you know there is a school in barnegat that is

believed to be haunted? The elizabeth V. edwards school on route 9 served as a high school and elementary school since its completion in 1930. The building is no longer in use since the last class of students left in 2004. Yet, people say it is still inhabited by something, or someone, otherworldly.

bill cox, a retired new York city police officer, has been the transportation and security coordinator for barnegat schools for more than eleven years. in a 2014 interview, he said of the supernatural experience, “it’s always been kind of mischievous. We don’t know if Lizzie (edwards) is haunting the school, but if she is, she’s a good ghost.”

cox, whose office sits next door to the abandoned school, had heard rumors that the edwards building was haunted when he took the job. at the time he shrugged off the notion. Today he is far less skeptical.

in 2004 barnegat school officials stopped holding classes at edwards because the building became too expensive to upgrade. The building was boarded up to prevent vandals from entering. not long after, cox had to respond to an alarm that had triggered in the old board of education building next to the edwards school at 2:00 aM. as he was leaving, on this rainy night, he noticed the lights on the second floor were turned on inside the empty school. because of the rain and the late hour, he decided to turn off the lights the next day. Upon his return, he found the room that was illuminated the night before had no bulbs installed. The fluorescent bulbs had been piled on the floor and had been there for about a week.

This event alone might not be enough to label the building “haunted,” but there have been reports of several more events.

Once, an employee was working a 3:00 to 11:00 PM shift. He was standing on his ladder doing renovations to the building. around 10:00 PM, as he sanded above the darkened auditorium door, he heard a creak and saw the door moving below him. He was so frightened he literally slid down the ladder. He ran outside and stood there until he was composed enough to begin cleaning up for the night. When he went back to retrieve his ladder it had been moved to another hallway.

The workman asked to be moved to a day shift. but working daylight hours didn’t prevent these odd occurrences. One afternoon, while working, he heard a phone ringing in the empty building. He followed the sound to the former principal’s office and saw an old rotary phone laying on the floor. The phone was not plugged into the wall.

During another event, noises were reported from upstairs. When the security officer went to check, fearing kids had broken in, there wasn’t anyone there. Once he was upstairs, he heard music from the 1940’s playing downstairs. He went down to investigate. The music was coming from down the hall where the stairway leads to the basement. He opened the basement door; the music stopped. He knew it was unlikely anyone was in the basement because the basement was flooded. That’s when he decided to go home.

Perhaps a skeptic could explain away what these men have experienced, or maybe the building is haunted. it’s for you to decide.

Happy Halloween!

Weird and Wonderful Uses for WD-40Most of life’s problems can be solved with two things: duct tape and WD-40. Therefore, that can

of WD-40 on your garage shelf is brimming with possibilities. We all use WD-40 to loosen screws, nuts and bolts, and protect tools from moisture, but that’s just for newbies. Did you know that it is an amazing cleaning and stain remover; or that it is used by gardeners, or can be an incredible lure when fishing? Check out these new tips and tricks for WD-40 and prepare to be astonished!

Spray a little WD-40 on your garden spade before digging to make it slide easier into the ground. If you have grandchildren, you’ll love its ability to quickly remove crayon scrawl from walls, table surfaces and TV screens. Spray it on a sponge or flannel and wipe off the crayon. You can quickly remove tea stains from a kitchen counter with the same method.

We’ve all had a ballpoint pen leak in a pocket. Spray it onto the stain, wait a few minutes, and then rinse and wash the clothes. If you have a plastic case with a price sticker stuck to it, spray a little WD- 40 on, and wait, and then rub off the sticker. It is fantastic if you have chewing gum stuck to your shoes or your hair. Spray, wait a few minutes, and then pull the gum off. How about unclogging the matted hair from your hairbrush? Spray onto the brush, wait for it to sink into the hair and pull the hair free.

You can spray WD-40 onto your shoes to waterproof them for the winter months. If you have stuck LEGO blocks, it can help you pull them apart. If you have candle wax or glue on your carpet, spray a little onto the wax and leave it to dry, and then rub it out with a sponge. If you have trouble with small animals causing damage to your trees, try spraying the affected area to repel them. Spray a little on outdoor fountains to prevent mildew growth in your garden.

If you have trouble with wasps nesting under your roof, spray the area with WD-40 once a year to keep them away. Because it’s waterproof it tends to stick around and can repel lots of insects and bugs. If you have mascara, nail polish or paint on a bathroom tile, it will remove it. Leaky car? Use it to remove the oil spots from your driveway. Sounds like a joke, but it is also good for some kinds of squeaky shoes, so give it a try.

Yes, you can use WD-40 to remove stuck rings from fingers. Just give a quick spray and pull the ring off. Wash your hands well afterward. It’s also great for loosening stuck zippers on clothes…. just be careful to spray the zipper and not the clothing. You can remove old duct tape and clean off car sticker residue from your windows easily. A bus driver in Asia used WD-40 to remove a python, which was coiled around the undercarriage of his bus.

If you like fly-fishing you could use it to polish your lures. However, this is not recommended by WD-40 because they don’t want to pollute rivers…. but it’s good to know. Lastly, most ask the question….is WD-40 a cure for arthritis? This is NOT true. There’s an urban myth that it can cure arthritis, but headquarters say this is not the case. Sorry Greenbriar seniors!!!

Delicious Ham & Potato Soup“This is a delicious recipe for ham and potato soup that a friend gave to me.

It is very easy and the great thing about it is that you can add additional ingredients, more ham, potatoes, etc and it still turns out great.”

Recipe by: [email protected] • Prep: 20 min Cook: 25 min

ingredientS

3 ½ cups peeled and diced potatoes1/3 cup diced celery1/3 cup chopped onion¾ cup diced cooked ham3 ¼ cups water2 tbs chicken bouillon granules½ tsp salt, or to taste1 tsp ground white or black pepper, to taste5 tbs butter5 tbs all-purpose flour2 cups of milk

direCtionS:

2. In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in flour with a fork, and cook, stirring constantly until thick, about 1 minute. Slowly stir in milk as not to allow lumps to form until all of the milk has been added. Continue stirring over medium-low heat until thick, 4 to 5 minutes.

3. Stir the milk mixture into the stockpot, and cook soup until heated through. Serve immediately.

It’s Time for a Big Bowl of Soup!

Pour in lentils, 1 quart water, oregano, rosemary, and bay leaves. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Stir in tomato paste and season with salt and pepper. Cover and simmer until the lentils have softened, 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add additional water if the soup becomes too thick. Drizzle with 1 teaspoon olive oil and red wine vinegar to taste.

Greek Lentil Soup (Fakes)Submitted by Peggy Hamernick

“Fakes (pronounced ‘Fah-kehs’) is a staple in the Greek kitchen, and an especially filling meal. It is traditionally served with a drizzle of olive oil and lots of vinegar. Though the vinegar is of course optional, try it. I lifts the lentils and adds another dimension of flavor!”

FORKED RIVER TOMS RIVERMANAHAWKIN SHIP BOTTOM

A Halloween memoryby J. Richard “dick” McLaughlin

“Don’t let your little brother out of your sight,” my mother said to my sister anne.

My costume was a cross between Superman and the Lone ranger, with a black cape, a black mask, and a cowboy hat. i was six, and that was who i wanted to be. My sister was eleven, and dressed as a nurse.

We both had brown paper bags to carry the goodies from our “begging,” as my sister called it.

The dusk was rapidly turning to darkness. We only knocked on doors where the front light was shining.

i was anxious at first, but soon got excited about sorting and eating the candy.

by the time we crossed into the third street, i noticed there weren’t any other kids. There was only one house with the front light on. as we approached the porch, i heard music inside.

“anything for Halloween,” my sister asked, when a white-haired lady, opened the door.

“Oh look, clarence, two beautiful children!” she said. “Please come inside,” she said sweetly, motioning with her hand.

anne started to enter. i was afraid, and tugged on her sleeve, but she brushed me off. This didn’t feel right to me, but i wasn’t going to stay on the porch by myself. i followed.

“Have a seat, children, while my husband plays some music for you. i will get you each a cup of hot chocolate.

The man playing the piano, was bald. He giggled as he played.

“Do you like chocolate chip cookies, sonny?” the lady asked.

i guess i nodded. i kept watching the man. Then the man lifted his hands off the keys, and began

to wave them in the air, but the piano keys kept moving up and down, and the music kept playing!

i couldn’t believe it. i looked again. The keys were still going up and down, as the music played. The man and woman started dancing with each other. i looked at anne. She seemed curious. Then she stood up and walked to the piano. Suddenly, she started laughing out loud, and the couple laughed too, reaching out their hands toward anne. anne took their hands, and began dancing with them! i thought my sister had lost her mind. i was scared.

Then the man walked over to me, and sat down beside me.

“What is your name, son?” he asked.i wasn’t sure if i should answer.“His name is richard,” anne said. The man held out his hand. “richard, my name is

clarence.” He took my unwilling hand, and stood up. “i would like to show you the secret to my magical piano.”

He led me to the front of the piano. He reached into an opening, and took out a cylinder, and the music stopped. He unfastened a card with holes in it. He explained how the holes in the card made his piano play different songs.

i guess he did a good job of explaining it to me, because i laughed and seemed relieved, as my sister later told my parents.

The next year, i went back to clarence’s house with my friends, but the front light was not on. For some reason, i never saw that couple again.

in today’s cynical and cautious world, we would never be allowed to go into someone’s house like that. but i have thought about that experience and told many people about it since. it was a very memorable Halloween for me.

A monster lives HereVin Sparano

Yes, we have our own monster, the Jersey Devil, and he was born in Leeds Point, only 25 miles or so from Waretown, in our Pine barrens. no one is quite sure when Deborah Smith, an immigrant Quaker woman from england, gave birth to the Jersey Devil, but it was probably hundreds of years ago. best guess is about 1735. Poor Mother Leed had the misfortune of marrying Mr. Leed, an abusive jobless drunkard who had already fathered 12 children. When Mother Leed found herself pregnant for the 13th time, she cried out in anguish “Let this one be a devil.”

Sure enough, on a stormy night at Leeds Point in our Pine barrens, Mrs. Leed gave birth to a healthy baby boy…but then something terrible happened. before her very eyes, her baby boy suddenly grew into the size of two grown men; it sprouted talons, hooves, wings and fiery red eyes. it transformed into the Jersey Devil. it turned on its own mother, killing Mrs. Leed, maiming her midwives and flying out the chimney and disappearing into the Pine barrens. Since that night hundreds of years ago and even today, the Jersey Devil continues to stalk its prey and attack travelers in our Pine barrens. One woman even claimed it tried to eat her dog.

in all fairness to the abusive Mr. Leed, some believe that Mrs. Leed was actually a witch and an unloving mother who had sex with the devil. at the birth, she cried out “Oh, let this one be a devil.”

Laugh it off, if you will. every time my wife and i drive down Leeds Point road, we pass an old stone house at a fork in the road and i always make the same comment. “i bet that house is haunted.” could it possibly be the birth place of the Jersey Devil? Maybe i just get spooked easy.

Many years ago, as a young soldier stationed in Germany, i regularly pulled guard duty at a remote fuel dump, often on a 12 midnight to 3 a.m. shift. an old sergeant of the guard always cautioned us to be on a

lookout for vampires and werewolves. “You know,” he would say, “they’re all over these bavarian woods. They were born here.” He was joking, of course.

We were always alone during these shifts. We carried a rifle, but it was empty. The army didn’t want us to shoot a young German trying to steal gas for his

motorcycle and starting an international incident. it didn’t make any difference anyway because our ammunition had copper-coated lead bullets, and we all know you need silver bullets to kill a werewolf.

The fuel dump had only two small white lights on opposite sides of the dump. as i walked solo around that dump with those lights casting shadows that conjured up evil images in my mind, i kept thinking about

what the sergeant said about vampires and werewolves “…all over these bavarian woods.” i really couldn’t totally convince myself that my sergeant was joking. When i think about it, those night shifts were pretty scary.

So there you have it. The Jersey Devil lives in our neighborhood. Just down the road. Does it really exist? Does it still haunt the Pine barrens?

are you a believer? Good thing you can’t play golf at night. The Jersey Devil might show up anywhere.

THE NEXT GREAT AmERICAN NOVEl — in aLL OF uSWritten by John Peter Siclere

Since we moved to Greenbriar Oceanaire in april of 2017 i have met and spoken with dozens of wonderful people who have shared with me stories and experiences of days gone by. everything from overseas military experiences to the very best way to make spareribs. childhood experiences, sibling rivalries, lost love and newly discovered happiness. Tales of business successes and failures, workplace drama and the effects of job-related aches, pains, scars and wounds. Some stories have made me convulse in laughter, some have scared the living daylights out of me, and some have made me choke up and cry. My first reaction to each and every one of my new friends and acquaintances is write about these experiences, chronicle them and share them with family and friends!

everyone has a story to tell, good or bad, joyous or solemn. Some experiences are best left unspoken and definitely unwritten, but others are so good and so unbelievable that they beg to be shared with others. if only for our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to hear or read. For native americans - and probably a few southern italians - stories are passed on to succeeding generations through conversation around campfires or at dinner tables. We all remember some of the things our grandparents have shared with us and can still remember where we were when we heard them.

For the cognoscenti who hang around with me on the adult side of the pool, we’ve regaled each other with great stories, some ribald, some enlightening, but entertaining, to say the least. i’ve encouraged my pool-mates to write these stories, if only for posterity.

i have written all of my life, at school and in my professional life and, other than essays, white papers, reports or brief biographies, i had never written an entire book. That changed in 2009 when i was asked to write the true story of an inner- city kid’s experiences as batboy for the new York Yankees. That experience of writing, editing, working with a developmental editor, trying to attract a literary agent and trying to publish the story is a story in itself.

earlier this year, i built my own website – www.scrittone.com – to continue my enjoyment of writing and editing. if you have even a passing interest in writing your story, writing a cookbook, or perhaps, taking a shot at your own great american novel, visiting the site may encourage you to take your interest a step further. if you ever want to talk about getting started, i’m the dark guy (Second to bob Desalvo) in the pool, married to Dorothy, the resident artist.

Here’s the first tip, pro bono: should you choose to start writing something on a laptop, set your page to a 6” X 9” dimension, double-space the writing and add page numbers from the very beginning. Trust me, i did not start out that way and regretted it after about 30 pages.

So, get busy writing. Write at least one page per day. be your own editor and proofreader. With today’s technology, you can actually print one copy of your story and become the copyright owner! Have fun and good luck.

"Fly Boys"Written by ed Friend

Our good friend and neighbor Tony Lembo, was a WWii b24 flight engineer and became a commercial pilot after the war.

Tony is 94 years young. We arranged for a 2 hour joint flight in a cessna 172 at Ocean county airport, bayville, nJ. They had a flight instructor who put us each through a 1 hour session to see how much we both remembered.

Tony operated out of Teterboro and Morristown, nJ airports many years ago and had a cessna dealership. He has thousands of hours in planes like Dc 3s and Dc 4s both domestic and international compared to my few hundred hours of regional VFr flying experience in cessna 150s and 172s.

neither of us had flown in over 30 years. While Tony was at the controls i took a few pics of Long beach island and Greenbriar Oceanaire.

Great day, great friends! Tony & Ed in front of the Cessna

puT VINEGAR TO WORKSubmitted by Connie Vaccaro

From “The Vinegar anniversary book” by emily Thacker

baTHROOMSbathrooms are always a special cleaning challenge.

They sprout mildew and mold, attract odors and breed tub and shower slime.

Tradition says the north african general, Hannibal, used the fact that vinegar weakens rock in his march through the alps from Spain to italy. You may not have immediate need to relocate a boulder so your elephants can cross a mountain range, but you may want to try some of these ways to ease cleaning chores:

SHOWeR HeadSWhen heavy mineral deposits are visible on the

shower head, it usually means these salts have been deposited inside, too. Unscrew the fixture and soak it in full strength white vinegar. The vinegar will dissolve and soften the buildup. if the small openings are clogged, use a tooth pick or small nail to remove the minerals that have been deposited on them.

Then scrub with old tooth brush and rinse well. Keep shower heads sparkling bright by wiping them down once a week with white vinegar. Give the tiny nozzle openings special attention, so that mineral precipitations do not develop. a thin coating of wax can help prevent hard water deposits from sticking to the metal.

SHOWeR CuRTainSa shower curtain that is stained with mildew or mold

can be revived by soaking it in a laundry tub of warm water with 2 cups of white vinegar added to it. Let it soak for a couple of hours (or overnight) and then wash in warm, sudsy water and dry in the sun. Wipe down the shower curtain on a regular basis with white vinegar and it will be less likely to develop mildew or mold stains. Just spray the bottom fourth of the curtain with white vinegar and wipe it off with a soft cloth.

SOaP FiLM ReMOVeRShower walls, in particular, seem to attract scummy

soap film. Vinegar and baking soda can eat right through it! Simply take 1 cup baking soda and add enough white vinegar to make a thick, frothy cream. Spread it over areas where soap film has built up and let set for 5 or so minutes. Wipe off with a soft brush or sponge, rinse in water with some white vinegar added to it and buff dry.

SOaP FiLM PReVenTiVePrevent soap film buildup by rinsing all exposed

surfaces, every week, with a solution of vinegar and water. a cup of white vinegar to a quart of water is about right for hard water areas, a cup to a gallon of water for soft water areas.

baTHROOM OdORSinstead of using an aerosol air freshener to fight

bathroom odors, keep a pump spray bottle of vinegar water handy. Just fill the bottle with water and one tablespoon white vinegar. Whenever odor relief is needed a few sprays will release a fine mist to neutralize odors. a mist with vinegar in it, instead of a floral scent, is especially good for households where someone has hay fever or allergic to flowers and grasses. Vinegar neutralizes odors without adding a fragrance that can trigger allergies and add to indoor pollution.
