The Programme for Water
Management, Use and Reuse at UNAM
www.pumagua.unam.mx
In 2007 the University Council agreed to adopt concrete measures to ensure
efficient water use and management in all of UNAM campus.
Accordingly, in 2008
“Programme for Water Management, Use and Reuse at UNAM”
was launched
Creation
To implement an integral programme for water management, use and
reuse at UNAM, with community participation.
Aim
www.pumagua.unam.mx
Healthy water, everyone’s action
(1) To reduce drinking water consumption by 50%
(2) To improve the quality of drinking water and treated wastewater according to the most strict regulation
(3) To promote participation of the entire community in the efficient use of water

•Absence of consumption measurement system
• Scarcity of updated hydraulic plans
• Loss of 50 l /s in leaks and inappropriate use
• About 30% of defective bathroom furniture
• Only 33% of gardens irrigated with treated water
• Adequate quality of drinking water but irregular monitoring
• Inadequate quality of treated water for irrigation
• Low participation of university community
• Lack of maintenance staff training

Irrigation with treated water produced byrenewed treatment plants complies withregulation
• Complementary microbiological indicators are being analyzed in orderto improve water quality assessment to be applied at all of UNAM’scampus.
• An automatic water disinfection system was installed in 2012 and drinking water currently complies with official regulation..
• Treatment plant was renewed and now produced water complies withofficial regulation.

PUMAGUA achievements
Over 100 units (schools, institutes and offices) participating
Proposals of over 200 students of 11 bachelor degrees regarding
water use and management
Over 15, 000 students carrying out water audits
and researches
More than 20 dissertations
Over 20 specialised and dissemination articles
Participation and organisation of public events
PUMAGUA contributes to improve the image of UNAM as a responsibleinstitution ,in social and environmental terms
Reducing by 23% the extraction of water from 3 wells implies that about 715 000 m3 per year are released. This volume is the annual consumption of nearly2730 Mexican families.
Reduced consumption of drinking water means less environmental impacts andlower expenditure in water and electricity.
Social and Environmental BenefitsAgua saludable, acción de todos
Social and Environmental Benefits
By having an adequate water quality , community health is improved and disposal of PET is reduced.
Reintroducing native vegetation implies less maintenance costs of greenareas and promotes conservation of local biodiversity.
Responsible water practices that take place at the University are likelyto bereplicate at home, i.e., water culture is promoted.
