No Dogs Allowed
For the safety of all pupils dogs
are not allowed on school
premises (except for guide dogs).
There is the potential for dog
excrement to carry nasty bugs
which can cause blindness (among other things) in humans, and children are
particularly susceptible.
There are also children who have a fear of dogs, regardless of size or
temperament. At the beginning and end of the school day the volume of
people on school grounds is very high and this could cause stress in a
normally docile animal.
We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
Little Kingfishers’
Nursery
A new nursery will be
opening in September

expressions of interest. Sessions will cover
8am—6pm on site at the new school. For
more information or to state your interest
please contact Kingfisher Primary via
email:
Thank you.
Preston Press Wednesday 7th February 2018 - Edition 2 Spring
Message from Mrs Green:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
At the end of this very ‘short’ half term, I hope that you will enjoy reading about what has been going on in school. We have had a very ‘full’ few weeks with trips and visits, sporting events and a theatre performance. Life is never dull and the children encouraging us daily to plan the next event to bring learning alive.
Many thanks to our wonderful Parent Teacher Association for organising the superb discos last Friday and to Glynn Cooper, who supplied the music. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event.
I hope that the children have an enjoyable half term and we look forward to seeing them after the break.
Thank you for your continuing support of our school and your child’s education.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs B Green, Head Teacher

Year 1 Trip—Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm
On a cold day in January we travelled to Noah's Ark Zoo Farm
near Bristol to learn about animals and their habitats. We viewed
most of the animals at close quarters as they were being fed. We
saw an elephant shake a barrel suspended from the ceiling to get
pieces of carrots out and we saw a rhino up close as it ate some
hay. A very hungry tiger came right up to the glass viewing
window to say hello (see photo) and we had the chance to see the
comical meercats being fed by a zookeeper. All of
the children behaved impeccably and enjoyed
themselves immensely.
Please visit our website ‘Gallery’ for more photos
from the visit.
Physical Activity Guidelines
for 5- to 18-year-olds
To maintain a basic level of health, children and
young people aged 5 to 18 need to do:
at least 60 minutes of physical activity every
day – this should range from moderate activity,
such as cycling and playground
activities, to vigorous activity, such as running
and tennis on three days a week, these activities
should involve exercises for strong muscles,
such as push-ups, and exercises for strong
bones, such as jumping and running
Many vigorous activities can help you build strong muscles and bones,
including anything involving running and jumping, such as gymnastics,
martial arts and football.
Children and young people should reduce the time they spend sitting watching
TV, playing computer games and travelling by car when they could walk or
cycle instead.
Year 2 Family Learning
Parents and grandparents had
the opportunity to learn some
circus skills alongside their
children this January. As part
of our Family Learning
sessions all pupils in Year 2
(with a pleasing number of
parents & grandparents)
had the chance to learn
juggling, balance tricks
and even how to
complete a tightrope

Year 1 Bird Feeders
Year 1 have been thinking about
how we can help the animals in our
gardens. We worked together in our
outdoor learning lesson to make bird
feeders; using sticky syrup and bird
seed. We got extremely messy but
we were pleased to see that the
hungry birds ate the seed really
quickly.

Pine Class with one of
the finished bird feeders.
Year 3 Roman Baths Trip
To finish our topic on the Romans,
Year 3 visited the Roman Baths in
Bath. We had a great time exploring
the museum and discovering how
they lived. We looked at artefacts,
created mosaics, and even got to
dress up! What a fantastic day!
Year 3 Bible Studies
As part of our work on Christianity, Elm
Class learned about the structure of the
bible. We discussed the difference between
the old and new testament and how to find
specific chapters or verses within them.
Year 5 Creatures in the Classroom
Year 5 have been working on their
entries for the Creatures in the
Classroom competition which is being
run by Bloomsbury, the publishers
of the Harry Potter books. The two
classes created their own
compendium of beasts by water-
colouring their creations as well as
writing about them and their - often
very strange - habits. Year 5 have
also celebrated their own ‘Harry
Potter’ Day on Monday by dressing
in themed costumes, making
potions in cauldrons, playing
Quidditch and being sorted into the
Houses. One of the classes entries is
pictured on the right.
The Real Schools Guide 2018 A survey completed by ‘The Real
Schools Guide’ recently ranked
Preston C of E Primary as 1st in the
county for Primary School
provision. Data was analysed from
the Government which included
pupils' attainment, progress, absence levels and when the
school was last inspected.

Year 4 As part of their Autumn D&T project, Year 4 wrote Christmas stories and made them into moving picture books to share with the younger children. In the week before Christmas, they visited the Year 1 children and had an enjoyable time reading their stories to the little ones who engaged brilliantly!
Year 6 Star Table
Mulberry Class have a star table! Every week, 2 children are selected (for exceptional work, great behaviour, etc) to sit at the star table where they enjoy a drink, a few sweets, time on the virtual reality headset and most importantly sitting in comfort, on a cushion! Here are this weeks recipients Charlie Lawson and Isabelle Lampitt (right).
Year 1 Yoga
Pupils in Year 1 are lucky enough to take
part in Yoga sessions every week. The
sessions cover stretching, breathing
techniques and relaxation exercises.
Every week we learn a new pose, often
called animal related names, e.g. dog, cat
& lion. Lucy and Siobhan from Pine
Class demonstrate the ‘Rainbow’ pose in
the photograph.
Reception Stained Glass
Oak Class have been busy making a
stained glass window cross to add to
our new Noah’s Ark role play area.
Internet Safety
On February 6th, we took part in Safer Internet
Day. Throughout the school, classes focussed on
how to use the internet safely and responsibly. We
talked about what to do if we experience
unkindness online and how our actions online leave a digital
footprint. As part of this day, we discussed the reliability of
the internet as a source of information. Visit
www.saferinternet.org.uk to find out more!
Beauty and the Beast Performance
This week, Years 4,5
and 6 watched an
outstanding remake of
the film Beauty and
The Beast. The
characters were really
funny and made us join
in with lots of shouting!
One of our favourite
parts was when the
spell was broken and
The Beast transformed
into a prince and he
asked Belle to marry
him. It was amazing!
Indoor Athletics Competition
A superb performance from all eighteen of our athletes at this year’s county sports hall athletics final resulted in Preston Primary winning several team events as the team excelled in their role as Yeovil champions. Held at Richard Huish College in Taunton, the level 3 School Games competition event saw eight schools from all over Somerset pitted against each other. Notable wins included our girls in the 4 x 1 lap relay and the 6 lap parlauf where Emma Farrant and Izzy Foster stormed to victory. The speed bounce competition saw two of our athletes Keisha Smith and Harrison Denham-Cookes achieve forty-eight reps to smash their own personal bests. Despite not winning, the whole team supported one another and tried their hardest in every event. Well done team!
