South African Minister of HealthDr. Karl Bremer has been appointed South African minister
of health and social welfare in succession to the late Dr. Stals.Dr. Bremer obtained his M.B. degree at Cape Town Universityin 1935 and his F.R.c.s. in 1938. On his appointment as ministerhe resigned from the presidency of the South AfricanMedical Council, an office which he had held for many years.

The Minister’s ReceptionOn Friday last Mr. Hilary Marquand, the Minister of
Health, held a reception at the new office of his Ministryin Savile Row. The move from Whitehall, where the Ministry’spresent offices will be occupied by the Minister of LocalGovernment and Planning, is taking place gradually overthe next few weeks.
London Hostel for TuberculousAt the end of last year the Ministry of Health approved
in principle of the London County Council’s proposal to providehostel accommodation for people with tuberculosis who areinfectious but are unlikely to benefit by further sanatoriumtreatment and who have no suitable home of their own
(see Lancet, 1950, ii, 779). The L.C.C. announce that theyare now setting up a hostel of this kind for 35 men in Islington.World Health OrganisationJapan has applied for full membership in W.H.O. The
application has been placed on the agenda of the WorldHealth Assembly due to open on May 7 in Geneva. Accordingto the W.H.O. constitution, States not belonging to theUnited Nations can be admitted as members by simplemajority vote of the assembly. To date, 74 countries ’havejoined W.H.O. and one country, Southern Rhodesia, has beenadmitted as an associate member.
Mr. C. Price Thomas, under the auspices of the BritishMedical Association and the British Council, is spendingtwo weeks in Yugoslavia lecturing and giving demonstrationsof the surgical treatment of tuberculosis. He is accompaniedby Dr. Robert Machray and Mr. Peter Jones.The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
