Professional Development workshop: ‘Integration of Future Focused Skills in School Curriculum’ Conducted by Professor Garry Falloon, Associate Dean International, and Professor, Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Human Sciences Abstract: What are desired 21st Century competencies or future-focused skills, why are they important, and how can we integrate them into our curriculum? This workshop will investigate the nature of so called 21st Century or future-focused skills and competencies, explore arguments for their importance and relevance to workplace readiness, and discuss how their development can be integrated into teaching and learning programs. Participants will be involved in the range of interactive group activities that evaluate the contribution of these competencies and skills to students’ learning, interrogate research into employers’ views of the importance of these skills, and explore the relationship between learning design, pedagogy, and skill development.

About DICE:

DICE is an umbrella with various platforms to jump start cycle of innovation towards sustainable development of the students. It is a consortium of education leaders and influencers in the K-12 and skills space with an objective to bring together the best of the world-renowned pedagogy, faculty and academic quality standards to India, keeping the academics strongly rooted to India and narratives that matter most to the sub-continent.

DICE works on various platforms such as the ‘DICE Knowledge Foundation’ which fosters the culture of Design, Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship among students, ‘Dice Ambassador Program’ offering merit and need- based scholarships, and in partnering with institutions in India to offer niche programs focused towards graduate employability.

Two key skill-based education initiatives of DICE are the Indian School of Management & Entrepreneurship (ISME) and Indian School of Design & Innovation (ISDI). These are new age concept in education with strong emphasis on industry links, innovative teaching and skill-based learning. All students pursue a Bachelor degree from the University of Mumbai, while simultaneously being enrolled in specialised certificate and diploma programs at ISME or ISDI. Many of these students choose to pursue higher studies at partner universities, mainly in UK presently.

Objective of the delegation:

• The delegation is keen to learn more about Australian universities and enter partnerships to

provide higher studies options to the students. • The delegation comprises of Principals/senior educators from more than 20 quality schools

and institutions in Mumbai. The schools are interested to learn about Macquarie’s undergraduate programs and scholarships, see the facilities themselves, and understand what sets Macquarie apart from other international universities.

• ISME and ISDE partnerships are aimed at postgraduate studies and key areas of interest are Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Business Analytics, Marketing, Management, Media and Communications.

Macquarie International has put together this program to highlight key strengths of the University, provide program briefing, talk about the new curriculum architecture and announce scholarships for the schools on this delegation. Some individual meetings are being organised to discuss partnerships with ISME and ISDI for undergrad articulation and full-time masters. Delegation leader: Dr Indu Shahani Dr. Indu Shahani is the President and Chairperson of ISDI and Founding Dean of ISME. Formerly Sheriff of Mumbai, she served as the Principal of H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai from 2000 to 2016. She has over three decades of teaching experience. Dr. Shahani was awarded the D.Litt (Honorary Doctorate of Letters) Degree by the University of Westminster in 2009. She is a Visiting Faculty Member at the UC Berkeley, NYU Stern, USA and is invited to be lead speaker at various conferences in India and overseas. She was the first Indian to be appointed as Vice – Chair on the Board of Governors of International Baccalaureate from 2001 – 2010. She has been nominated on leading boards of national and global companies including Colgate Palmolive India Ltd., Clariant Chemicals India Ltd., United Spirits Ltd., Diageo, Franklin Templeton Investments and Indian Oil Corporation. She also has other academic board positions – University of Westminster, EDHEC Business School, Paris and others. She is on the board of a number of NGO’s as well and was responsible for launching the Women’s Helpline against domestic violence and harassment in India. Dr. Shahani has received many awards, prominent among them are ‘Women of the Decade Achievers Award’ by ASSOCHAM; ‘Citizen of Mumbai Award’ by Rotary Club of Bombay and ‘Excellence in Education Award’ by the FICCI FLO.
