HistoryThe history of Hail dates back to the prehistoric ages through the pre-Islamic ages and the Islamic Era. It was one of the most invulnerable sites in the Arabian Peninsula and neither Hera Kings of Iraq nor Al-Gsassenah Kings of the Levant concreted Hail until

the Kingdom>s unification in 1351H (1932G).Hail is a multicultural province as it combines the Assyrian and Babylonian cultures as indicated in the Thamudic and Assyrian inscriptions on Hail’s stones and rocks, which are considered to be momentous tourism attractions.Hail is always associated with the famous legendary character Hatim Al-Al-Ta,ey, who is known for his extreme generosity and hospitality. Hail is also associated with the historic Hajj routes used by pilgrims and trade caravans. Hail Province is the homeland of many poets and authors, and was visited by many famous European explorers in the

19th and 20th centuries although Hail was not easily accessed in those days.

Geographic LocationHail is located in the center of the northern part of Saudi Arabia, between 25 and 29 degrees latitude and 38 and 42 degrees longitude. The Province is surrounded by five administrative provinces, which are Jouf, the Northern Boarders, Tabuk, Medina, and Qaseem. Hail Province is known for its strategic location since it connects the north to the northeast, and passengers from all over the Kingdom pass by Hail on their way to Makkah. It covers an area

of approximately Covers an area of approximately 118,232 km2, which is about 6% of the total area of the Kingdom. The province consists of four major administrative areas that include three governorates and the center of the province, in addition to 66 administrative centers.

ClimateThe climate of Hail is continental. The temperature reaches an average of 30-34 degrees Celsius in summer and 5-15 degrees Celsius in winter. Rain falls during winter and spring. Winds drift with an average speed of 10km/hour. Spring is the best season for visiting Hail, when the climate is

mild and rainy.

TopographyHail Province is known for its diverse topography as it consists of valleys, mountains, and sand and rock formations. Hail main topography features can be classified into: 1- Al-Hmmad area which is known for its calcareous hills and deep valleys.2- Nfoud desert that covers an area of 40 thousand km², which is approximately 1/3 the total area of Hail Province.3- Sand formations which cover vast areas such as A`roug Almadhoor. It is located to the west of the Dahna desert, which

is one of the most important grazing lands in the region and the best camping site in summer. 4- Rock formations which are located to the west of Hail and cover about 1/3 of the Province’s lands. It is one of the most famous tourism sites in Hail holding the most famous mountains such as the mountain of Salma, Ajja, Heden, Ruman, Louf, Khashab, A`qab and other famous mountains.

Population Hail has a population of 260.000 in 1394H, and increased to reach 421.100 in 1413H and 520.000 in 1420H, which is about 2.5% of the Kingdom’s population. More than

43% of Hail locals live in Hail city, whereas the rest are distributed around other governorates and administrative centers of the Province. The population density is about 4.4/km², with a growing rate of 2.8%. Hail Province, like other provinces of the Kingdom, is witnessing great immigration movement to the main provinces of the Kingdom. Up to the year 1419H, 18% of Hail locals moved to live in other provinces, but some are still visiting Hail in school holidays and social events.

Prayer TimesPrayer time in Hail province is 4-20 minutes earlier than Makkah. Prayer time can be easily identified

in Umm Al-Qura calendar.

Hail contains different historic monuments of different historic ages and eras; it is famous for its great urban heritage and unique architectural designs.

Hail is also rich in handicrafts and traditional industries. The craftsmen workshops and traditional soaks and shops reflect the customs, believes, and traditions of Hail society that are

based on the Islamic rules and regulations.In Hail you can enjoy its famous traditional literature such as poetry, narratives, and myths; in addition to various types of traditional folk art. You can also enjoy different sports and activities such as horse riding, horse and camel racing competitions, and hunting using falcons and salukis. Nature and EnvironmentHail is rich with its beautiful

Sports and AdventuresHail is famous for its diverse sports and activities due to its beautiful nature, such as hiking in Ajja Mountains. 9.30 Driving through Aja Mountains (Twaren-Jou-Elself) Passing by Hatim Altaay HomelandThis trip requires a 4x4 vehicle that you can easily obtain with or without a driver from any nearby car rental agencies. While you are driving through this marvelous mountain chain, we recommend that you stop at Twaren valley to see some landmarks of the legend Hatim Altaay-who was known for his extreme generosity. At that site, history and nature meet together creating a beautiful picture of sky-scraping mountains and high palm trees.

16.00 Eqddah VillageNo one can visit Hail without visiting this village. It is famous for its high palm tress, mountain mint and water dams. In this village you will witness God’s creativity in the amaranthine sands and clear colored pebbles. You will find great hospitality from the locals and they will never let you leave without inviting you for a cup of Minted tea. Those who like hiking will also enjoy the great mountains of this village.It is located at 41 36 12 degrees longitude and 27 31 07 degrees latitude.

18.00 Mushar Natural ParkThis great village is only 20 minutes far from Hail. It is the best place where your children can have fun practicing their favorite hobbies. Friday Morning: Barazan MarketThis market is held every Friday morning of each week. It is held on Friday because it is a national weekend and both salesmen and women enjoy selling their handicrafts. This is the best time for bargaining and buying traditional dishes from the ladies section (Klejjah-hot red pepper-mint…etc.). You can also buy fresh local fruits and vegetables from the nearby vegetable market.

Handicrafts MarketIn this market you will find old copper products such as the Dallah (traditional coffee pot) and various types and shapes of trays, you can also find different kinds of birds as bird sellers gather in this market every Friday. The best gift you can buy from this place is a small Dallah or an incense burner made from tamarisk wood. When you visit this market don’t forget to visit the neighboring market where Bedouin men and women gather to sell their dairy products-such as milk, butter, and dry yoghurt, and some handmade products such as the Gurbah (traditional water canteen made from leather) and Alsado

(traditional carpets and rugs used for decoration).

15.00 FarmsIf you have enough time you should visit the farms in Elga`ed and Elkhuttah, which are about 45 minutes drive from Hail. There you can find out how agricultural products are planted and harvested. In these farms you will enjoy God’s creation where the sand, mountains and green lands are jointed under a beautiful clear blue sky. You can enjoy your trip over there by moving around using your car or just by walking bare footed on the sand as locals do.Elga`ed is located at 41 43 55

Hattem Altaay - who is the most generous man in the Arabian history – lived in Hail, Hattem Altaay lived in a village located in the valley between Aja and Salma Mountains in Hail city. It is said that the wood fire under his huge cooking pots would stop so that he would always be ready

for serving guests and travelers passing by.

It was said that after Hattem Altaay died, some people passed by his grave and camped next to it. One of those men, called Al-Khaibary, started kicking Hattem’s grave and souting: “Hey Hattem, where are you? Why don’t you show us the generosity your people are claiming?” After every one went to sleep Al-Khaibary had a dream and walk up shouting: “Oh! Oh! My camel!!” Every one walk up on his shouting and asked him what was wrong, he told them that he saw Hattem Altaay in his dream blaming him for shouting at his grave and

asked him to slaughter his camel and feed his friends. When he finished telling the dream he and his friends went to his camel and found it very sick so they had to slaughter it and cook its meet. After a while a strange man came heading towards them and asked for Al-Khaibary, the strange man gave a camel to him and said that he is Hattem Altaay’s son and that he saw his father in a dream last

night asking him to give this camel to a man named Al-Khaibary!

Archeological SitesYateb MountainYateb is one of the most important tourism sites in Hail. There you can enjoy the desert weather and the Bedouin tents offering great hospitality.Yateb Mountain is located 30 km far from Hail city at 41 57 38 degrees longitude and 27 29 56 degrees latitude. It is an archeological site that goes back to 3000BC. This site is important due to its Thamudic inscriptions describing daily activities of the people of that period. These inscriptions include drawings of

human beings, camels, lions, and palm trees.

Aa`iref FortAa`iref fort is located in the middle of Hail city, on top of a mountain overlooking the city from the south at 41 21 00 degrees longitude and 27 34 00 degrees latitude. This fort was built with rocks and mud during Al-Ali time and was restored in Al-Rsheed time. The urban structure of this fort is not different than any defense buildings that were known in the center of the Kingdom, yet it is one of the most important archeological and cultural sites in the province. It gains its important

from its unique architectural designs and strategic location, as it look down upon Hail city. It is fort you can see Hail farms, traditional markets and quarters such as Lebdah and Sarha quarters. Aa`iref fort is unique with its stoned walls and facades, interior designs, beautiful doors and windows, and its strategic location, as you can see the fort from all over the city. The fort consists of an entrance to the east side opening into a small patio leading to another entry next to the mosque that is located in the center of the fort. The mosque has one aisle containing five pillars and to the east side the mosque there is a

stair case leading to a five meters high tower. This tower is round shaped and has some windows at the top that were used for observation. Aa`iref fort is designed to have multi altitudes following the mountain’s formations. It is expected that the fort was built before the year 1260H (1840G) and was developed on the year 1310H (1890G).

Janeen Cave and MountainJaneen Mountain is located 75km northeast from Hail city at 42 31 16 degrees longitude and 27 56 100 latitude, it is considered to be one of the most important tourism sites in Hail Province as it holds one of the oldest caves that goes back to the prehistoric times. It also contains some

inscriptive rocks and stones of all types describing human life from the prehistoric era to the pre-Christ era. The cave inscriptions include drawings of the daily activities of the human beings and animals of those old days.

Twaren CastleThe remains of this beautiful castle is located in the most magnificent site in Twaren historic valley at Aja mountain about 65km northwest of Hail city, at 41 44 46 degrees longitude and 27 58 61 degrees latitude. This castle is considered to be one of the most important cultural sites since it is connected to Hattem Altaay and Taya tribe that used

to live in this place. There you can see Hattem’s grave and his daughter’s grave, who is said to be a Muslim. You can also see the fire place that Hattem Altaay used to start day and night to serve guests and travelers. This site, in addition to other neighboring sites, should be visited by the tourists to learn more about this legendary character and the history of the famous Taya tribe.

FaidFaid is one of the most important cultural sites that we recommend you to visit and learn more about the history of this place through its archeological remains. Faid town is located to the southeast

of Hail city, about 130km far between 42 31 01 degrees longitude and 27 06 45 degrees latitude. It is the town of two of the most famous Arabian tribes (Assad) of the dark ages and (Taya) of the Islamic Era. Most of Faid archeological remains are located about 1.5km to the north of Faid town and covers an area of 1.5km wide and 1.5km long. The most important archeological sites in Faid town is its strong fort, known as Khrash castle, where you can learn about the architecture design of this castle (gates, fences, rooms, halls, kitchens ….etc.). On the south and north sides of the fort you can see Faid’s road intersections,

the remains of the great mosque, the wells, ponds, and surface water canals. You can also see the merge between the old and modern town, which still has remains of old ponds and canals.

An Nea`y Old TownAn Nea`y old town is located at 42 17 00 degrees longitude and 27 10 54 degrees latitude. It holds two important historic and archeological sites and they are A`antar bin Shaddad’s water spring which is a beautiful water spring located on top of the mountain and A`antar bin Shaddad’s grave that is located on top of the mountain facing the water spring. These sites attract

great number of tourists, who visit this place to learn more about the legendary character A`antar bin Shaddad.

Zubaidah Trail PondsYour visit to Hail would never be complete without visiting the Hajj route between Kouffah and Makkah that is known historically as Zubaidah route. This route contains Islamic archeological sites including (54) main recreational stations on the main trail and many other stations on branch roads. Each one of these stations has a pond, some were built in a rectangular shape or in a crescent shape, and some had scalars and artesian tanks. These

ponds were built in valleys close to the waterfalls of rain streams and away from strong torrential stream the water of these resources are either poured directly into the ponds or through dams and canals. The walls of these ponds are built with stones holding together with mud and pebbles and covered with strong and soft mortar.

Most important ponds to be visited:Al AjfarAl Ajfar pond is located to the northeast of Salma Mountain and 74km far from Faid site between 43 05 66 degrees longitude and 27 52 78 degrees latitude. This pond was shaped as a crescent that is 25 meters wide. The pond has an entrance towards the west side to facilitate water entry and an exit towards the west side to drain excess water.

El Ba`ayth (El Hajjer)Group of ponds located at El Ba`ayth town, which is currently a large town located in the center of Ar Remmah valley between

Sumirra to the north and El Nugrah to the south at 41 47 58 degrees longitude and 26 01 38 degrees latitude. El Ba`ayth city is considered to be an important tourism attraction due to its archeological sites and was mentioned in many historic books and documents. There are three ponds in El Ba`ayah town: the first one is a crescent pond buried in the west side of the valley, the second is a square pond (28m x 28m) located in the center of the valley and the third pond is a rectangular pond (32m x 26m) located in the southwest of the valley.

Sabha

Sabha site is one of the most important tourism sites to be visited. This site was named Sabha after the famous water wells located there. It is an archeological site located at 42 04 36 degrees longitude and 27 25 09 degrees latitude, where you can find inscriptive rocks and stones representing Thamudic scripts and drawings of lions, gazelles, camels and other animals.

Jubbah VillageIt is located in the west side of the great Nfoud desert, about 100 km far from Hail city between 40 55 09 degrees longitude and 28 04 48 degrees latitude. It is one of the most important archeological

villages of Hail Province. It is also a very important tourism site since it holds some of the most oldest sites in history that goes back to the stone ages. In this village you can see different inscriptive rocks describing the cave man daily life. You can also learn more about the tools and techniques for engraving. One of the most famous engravings is the one found on Umm Sunman Mountain which represent the early epoch of engraving and goes back to 7000BC. These engravings are unique in the way they describe the daily life of humans and animals of that time. These engravings can be classified into two periods; the

first period goes back to 7000BC and represents full human bodies and women figures with long braided hair and decorated skirts and pictures of different animals such as lions, camels, gazelles, sheep, cats and dogs. The second period goes to the Thmoudian Era and represents pictures of camel breeding, war sceneries, warriors carrying their spears, gazelles, cheetahs, ostriches and palm trees.

El HwaitEl Hwait is located to the east west of Al HaAet and 280km to the southwest of Hail city between 40 22 44 degrees longitude and 25 38 52 degrees

latitude. El Hwait site is not less important than Al HaAet site, in fact they complement each other since they have the same unique features. El Hwait was previously known as (Ydeea`), which is an archeological site that goes back to two periods: the Pre-Islamic period that is represented in the Thamudic engravings on pegmatite stones spread all over the place; and the Islamic period represented in the remains of the old town such as: the remains of homes, castles, commercial and defensive buildings and the Koufian engravings on grave stones.

Archeological Quarters

Hail quarters are considered to be important tourism and cultural sites as they represent the history of this city. Hail historic center contains three traditional quarters and they are Alalya, Labdah and Sarhah. These quarters are distinguished with their architectural designs that are very well known on the local level. Although most of these archeological buildings were destroyed or demolished, the remaining ones are worth to visit. The most important buildings in these quarters are the homes and palaces of gold traders in Hail, the tourist can visit these palaces and enjoy beautiful reception rooms (Majles) that are decorated with

plaster, wood and fresco.

The Towers of Barazan CastleThe remains of Barazan towers are considered to be great archeological heritage in the center of Hail city. These towers and the surrounding buildings are important historically; therefore every tourist should visit these sites such as Barazan traditional market that is known for its traditional handicraft products.

Barazan Traditional MarketThis market is located in the center of Hail next to the Barazan towers. In this market you can find local and imported traditional products. This market was fenced

in the past with four large gates; each gate was named after famous locals. Tourists must visit this market as it represents the traditional and historical heritage of this province.

El GashlahIt is one of the most famous urban heritage sites in the center of Hail city. It gains its importance from its strategic location, as it is located in the middle of Hail city commercial and historic center. It is also an important historic site as it goes back to the Al Saud period, 60 years ago. El Gashlah was built with mud and pebbles in the Najdi architectural design. There are eight towers, two large

gates, a mosque and beautifully decorated doors and windows.

El HaitAlthough it is located 270 km southwest from Hail, between 40 28 21 degrees longitude and 25 59 28 degrees latitude. It is worth to visit, since it is one of the most important cultural sites in the province. It is a complete tourism site with great cultural,

heritage, environmental, natural, and personal potentials that can qualify this site to be registered in the International List of Archeological Sites. These two lovers had a made named Bzakhah, who used to work as a messenger between these two lovers, until one day Bazakhah told them that the people of the area knew about their love and told them that they have to run away. The people killed Bazakhah on a hill near Hail that was named after her. They also chased both Salma and Aja, each was caught and killed on a mountain.

When you are observing crane be sure to register the observation location, time, date, the expected number of cranes, flight direction, their altitude in meters, and any other notes you find important to be

listed in the Observation Form. It is difficult to count the cranes when they are flying, therefore it is easier to take photos of them and count them later on.
