Christus in his 115 AD annals.

Flavius Josephus (37-97 AD), Jewishcourt historian for Emperor Vespasian:

his disciples did not abandon his discipleship.

They reported that he had appeared to them

three days after his crucifixion and that he was

The Apocryphon of John, probably bySaturninus, around 120-130 AD:

"It happened one day when John, thebrother of James,--who are the sons ofZebedee--went up and came to the temple,

that a Pharisee named Arimaniusapproached him and said to him, `Where is

your master whom you followed?' And hesaid to him, 'He has gone to the place fromwhich he came.' The Pharisee said to him,

'This Nazarene deceived you with deceptionand filled your ears with lies and closedyour hearts and turned you from the

traditions of your fathers.'"

Also the Gospel of Thomas, probably from140-200 AD contains many references to

and alleged quotations of Jesus.

Even the darkness that covered the land duringJesus' crucifixion was recorded in secular history

Africanus wrote:"Thallus, in the third book of hishistories, explains away the darkness as an eclipse

of the sun--unreasonably, as it seems to me."

[Unreasonably, because a solar eclipse cannot take place

during a full moon, as was the case during Passover season.]

Julius Africanus, writing in 221 AD, found a

reference in the writings of SamaritanHistorian C. Thallus, (c. 50-75AD)who wrote a history of the Eastern

Mediterranean dealing with the darknessthat covered the land during Jesus'

crucifixion:

Also Origen States that Phlegon ConfirmsJesus' story & The Darkness at Noon:

Phlegon was a historian who lived in the first century. There are

two books credited to his name: Chronicles and the Olympiads.Little is known about Phlegon but he made reference to Christ.The first two quotes are unique to Origen and the last quote

below is recorded by Origen and Philopon.

"Now Phlegon, in the thirteenth or fourteenth book, I think, ofhis Chronicles, not only ascribed to Jesus a knowledge of future

events . . . but also testified that the result corresponded to Hispredictions."-- Origen Against Celsus

"And with regard to the eclipse in the time of Tiberius Caesar, inwhose reign Jesus appears to have been crucified, and the greatearthquakes which then took place"-- Origen Against Celsus

"Phlegon mentioned the eclipse which took place during thecrucifixion of the Lord Jesus and no other (eclipse); it is clearthat he did not know from his sources about any (similar) eclipsein previous times . . . and this is shown by the historical account

Pliny the Younger, Roman governor ofBithynia in Asia Minor around 112 AD:

"[The Christians] were in the habit of meetingon a certain fixed day before it was light, when

they sang in alternate verses a hymn toChrist, as to a god, and bound themselvesby a solemn oath, not to any wicked deeds,

but never to commit any fraud, theft or

adultery, never to falsify their word, nor denya trust when they should be called upon todeliver it up; after which it was their custom toseparate, and then reassemble to partake offood--but food of an ordinary and innocent

kind."Pliny added that Christianity attracted personsof all societal ranks, all ages, both sexes, and

from both the city and the country. Later in hisletter to Emperor Trajan, Pliny refers to the

teachings of Jesus and his followers asexcessive and contagious superstition.

denounced to you as Christians isextremely proper. It is not possible to lay

down any general rule which can beapplied as the fixed standard in all cases ofthis nature. No search should be made forthese people; when they are denounced

the party denies himself to be a Christian,and shall give proof that he is not (that is,by adoring our gods) he shall be pardonedon the ground of repentance, even thoughhe may have formerly incurred suspicion.Informations without the accuser's name

Emporer Hadrian (117-138 AD), in a letterto Asian proconsul Minucius Fundanus:

"I do not wish, therefore, that the matter should be

passed by without examination, so that these menmay neither be harassed, nor opportunity of

malicious proceedings be offered to informers.If, therefore, the provincials can clearly

evince their charges against the Christians,

so as to answer before the tribunal, let thempursue this course only, but not by merepetitions, and mere outcries against the

Christians.For it is far more proper, if anyone would bring an

accusation, that you should examine it."Hadrian further explained that if Christians werefound guilty they should be judged "according to

the heinousness of the crime." If the accusers wereonly slandering the believers, then those who

inaccurately made the charges were to be

punished.

between 70 and 200 AD, states:

"On the eve of the Passover Yeshu washanged. For forty days before the executiontook place, a herald went forth and cried,'He is going forth to be stoned because hehas practised sorcery and enticed Israel to

apostacy. Anyone who can say anything inhis favour, let him come forward and pleadon his behalf.' But since nothing wasbrought forward in his favour he washanged on the eve of the Passover."

[Another early reference in the Talmudspeaks of five of Jesus' disciples and

recounts their standing before judges whomake individual decisions about each one,

deciding that they should be executed.However, no actual deaths are recorded.]

"The Christians you know worship a man tothis day the distinguished personagewho
