DIESEL FUEL AND MOTHER NATURE

A Clearafin Products Presentation

FACT

• Every year we spend millions around the world on Biocides.• Large sums are spent on filters to treat the fuel bugs we have in our fuel storage tanks, for generators and other machinery, even private of commercial boating / shipping• The presence of water in the fuel tank being the main reason for the treatment to remove the algae / bacteria / fungus and subsequent sludge.

BIOCIDE REGULATIONS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

• Biocides, like other chemicals, are being heavily regulated across the world due to the impact that they have on the environment –

Especially aquatic life forms.• European Regulation BPR, Regulation (EU) 528/2012• The NAFTA agreement between Canada, Mexico, and the USA has seen an effort

being made to harmonise pesticide registration requirements• A building block approach to implement versions of GHS(2) worldwide in countries

including EU, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Canada, Mexico, and Singapore.• Versions of the EU REACH (1) regulation in Korea (K-REACH) and China• 1 September 2016 was a milestone deadline in the latest revision of the

EU regulation controlling the supply and use of non-agricultural pesticides (also known as “Biocides”)

SO WHAT DO WE KNOW?

• By researching the market and reviewing current Biocides that are available to combat Algae, bacteria, and fungus in fuel tanks, we found a substantial variation in price.

• Inspecting the products in detail and their constituent base chemicals ( information from MSDS documents), we found most of them have harmful ingredients - not just harmful to the environment but also to humans ( dependent on exposure).

• For confirmation of these products contents is to look at the back of the bottle and you will see similar symbols that are shown above.

• This is a legal requirement all manufactures of chemicals, have to place on their products.

OUR CONCLUSIONS ARE BASED ON……

• For Clearafin to produce an Environmentally friendly product we had to understand the problem,

• The real questions to be asked - What is the major cause of water to be in

fuel?What was the Fungus?

What was the Bacteria? What is a sustainable solution to these

problems?

WATER IN THE FUEL

• Fuel microbes need water to survive and thrive.

Possible causes• Contaminated fuel, from supplier• Leaking Filler Caps on the boat or

equipment• Fuel Tank vent incorrectly fitted• Fuel Tank sender unit is made of

steel ,corrosion damages the fixing bolts, allowing water to enter

• Condensation – possible but unlikely

KNOW THE BACTERIA

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

• A bacteria found in diesel and jet fuels.

• Can give the appearance of algae as it puts a green colour on top of the diesel.

• The bacteria are found widely in the environment, such as in soil, water, and plants. They usually do not cause infections in healthy people. If an infection does occur in a healthy person, it is generally mild

KNOW THE FUNGUS

Cladosporium Resinae

It is mainly a fungal growth. Fuel is its main food source; it prefers kerosene or automotive diesel fuel to petrol. Looking like a "chocolate mousse". When the conditions are right, growth will occur at the fuel/water interface. Large mats of slime can form quickly and block filters. Reduced fuel stability and corrosion can also occur

DO BIOCIDES WORK

• YES- some Biocides work, but work by killing the fungus and bacteria outright, which is what you brought them for.

• The result is that the dead bacteria and fungus settles to the bottom of your fuel tank, creating sludge, ending up in your fuel filters, and blocking them, time after time.

• Removal and cleaning of the Tank is the only real way to ensure the removal of the sludge.

THE CLEARAFIN SOLUTION

• So now knowing the cause we at Clearafin have produced a product (not a chemical) that tackles the contamination, by simply using a Eco-benign™ development that ensures an

environmentally friendly solution, and a cost affective solution.

• Once you have carried out your Preventative maintenance, removing all sludge and water from your system, just add

the correct amount of Clearafin product every week, to ensure you have trouble free fuel issues.
