Working with Type

Sometimes type can be used to create an image. Type maps and type portraits are just two ways to use type to make an image.

These next slides demonstrate a technique for using type to create an image.

Download a portrait for use in this exercise.

Crop out the background.

Working with Type

Convert image to black and white, then posterize. (Image > Adjustment > Posterize)

Hide the image layer and add a new layer to your file.

In this new layer type a few words.

Create a Photoshop brush using the words you just typed:• Make a selection

around the first word.• Go to Edit > Define

Brush Preset. • Name your new brush. • Do the same for the

remaining words.

Create a Photoshop pattern using the words:• Make a selection

around all the words.• Go to Edit > Define

Pattern. • Name your new

pattern.

Make a selection that includes all of the black areas on your image.

Hide the image, insert a new layer.

Use the brush or the pattern you created to fill the selection. (Areas outside the selection will not fill.)

Repeat process with other areas of the image until you feel your type portrait is complete.
