Digipak Analysis

Page 2: Digipak analysis

Foo Fighters-Greatest HitsThe disc art has the disc looking like an old vinyl which has shrunk down to fit into this digipak. This suggests the style of rock music is on the disc, that it is more old fashioned style of songs than current style of rock music. This also suggests that it is aimed at an older audience with the vintage artwork on the disc as a lot of teenagers now-a-days may have never heard of a vinyl.

The cover also has this vintage look about it. A picture of the band in black and white also gives this vintage feel to the digipak and it looks as if this is the theme overall for the entire digipak. The cover is very simplistic and so this is probably the direction we will go in, also as our market research has shown a simplistic approach is appealing. As our digipak will be for the Foo Fighters also, we should take more from this digipak than maybe the others. The colour scheme is also simple, using only 3 colours and their different shades keeps in with the simple approach vintage look approach.

The back of the digipak has the song list of what’s on disc one and disc two. This allows the audience to view the songs before purchase and make sure that they will enjoy the digipak before they buy it. This shows care towards their consumers which they will unknowingly (subconsciously) appreciate the concern. This may actually push people to purchase the digipak. The two song lists have been separated so they can be clearly viewed to what song is on what disc, this is very important as people like knowing which disc to play if they prefer one over the other.

The artwork is also simplistic on the back of the digipak keeping in tune with the rest of the artwork. Consistency is important for people to understand what they are purchasing. The title of the digipak is repeated on the back of the cover and suggests to me this is something we should repeat.

Linkin Park-Greatest HitsThis digipak has also gone for a vintage vinyl look with their disc. This suggests the type of rock music on the disc. However, compared with the Foo Fighters digipak this disc has their own bit of artwork on it while the Foo Fighters disc centre was white. This allows us when we create our digipak to have more freedom if we design a disc for the pack.

The cover to this digipak is similar to the previous digipak in respect to the fact a stylistic picture of the band has been used as the front cover. This cover is more complex than the previous as the faces of the band look to have been sketched onto some old parchment paper. This appeals to an older audience also, this is because they will understand the pictorial reference. The complex art style contrasts to the previous simplistic artwork. Again only 3 colours have been used for the colour scheme: Black (and various shades); white (and it’s various shades; and red (and variants of the colour). This ties in with the simplistic digipak approach but I feel as if more shades have been used on this digipak to give it a little more of an exciting feel to it.

Makes it more than just a regular album

The back of the digipak also has two separate song lists for the two discs. These song lists are separated by another, mush clearer, image of the entire band. The artwork adds to a reason why the audience may want this digipak. The back keeps to the colour scheme except no red is used on the back and so this would keep people more towards the front and the inside of the digipak as this is where the extra colour is used and adds to the presentation of the design.

AutonomieFor this digipak front cover design a cut out design has been used. This adds a sort of 3D effect to the digipak as we now have a heightened surface. The cover of the little booklet has been used as the majority of the cover of the digipak reducing effort of designing a separate cover for the two things. The main colours used again are white, black and red. This has been a proven continuous theme throughout my analysis of all the digipaks. This suggests that this is what the audience look for on the digipak or what they respond too the best. Just like the magazine covers we designed last year every digipak has a set core 3 colours they use throughout the design.

This digipak is shown to come equip with a booklet. I presume that in this booklet is information about the band and lyrics for their songs. This digipak is the first one I have analysed and physically seen a booklet, but this does not mean that the other packs did not have booklets also. They are just not visible in the image. I feel though that for this pack the booklet is of great importance as it acts as the main cover for the most part of the entire digipak.

The artwork on this digipak is much more complex than the others. Images of the actual person/people have NOT been used. These images have been drawn and designed by an artist. This attracts the audience attention so they feel as if they need to look closer to understand what is going on in the pictures

In the previous two digipaks, what seems to have grabbed the audience’s attention is the fact that two discs are included in each. From what we can see here there is only one disc included. However the unique selling point we have for this digipak is that it includes this booklet which we do not physically see the other digipaks including. Whether our digipak includes a booklet is up to us for this matter.
