DIGITAL COLLECTIONS GROWTH • TheDigitalLibraryandInstitutionalRepositoryaccomplishedsignificantgrowththispastyear,with
39,802filesaddedtotheonlinerepositories,andagrandtotalof102,849items/332,202files.
• ThisyeartherewasastrongfocusonsupportingaccesstoUniversityArchivesmaterialsinDigitalCommons,withtheBBCStudentGovernmentAssociationsArchive.OthernewcollectionsincludeMiamiBeachUrbanStudios3Drenderings,andtheBioethicsEducationResources(BEdR)Portal.
• TheDigitalLibraryestablishedseveralnewcommunitypartnerships,hostingcollectionsfromtheEvergladesNationalPark,theBoyntonBeachPublicLibrary,theOaklandParkPublicLibraryaswellastheMiamiShoresPublicLibrary,withcontinuedpartnershipsincludingtheMonroeCountyPublicLibraryandVirginiaKeyBeach.
• Wecontinuetopublishandarchiveelectronicthesesanddissertations(ETDs),whichincludetheworksofnewFIUgraduatesaswellasretrospectivedigitizationofthesesanddissertationsdatingbacktotheopeningoftheuniversity.272newETDsand106retrospectiveETDswerepublishedandarchivedin2018/2019.ORCIDusebyFIUgraduatesincreasedfrom29%to38%thispastyear.

DonatedbyDr.Orozco’sfamilytoFIULibraries’SoundandImageDepartmentin2018,thiscollectioniscurrentlyavailableforresearchinordertohonortheoutstandingworkofDr.DaniloOrozcoandcontinuehislegacy.DaniloOrozcoGonzalezwasaCubanmusicologist,professor,andresearcher.HewasborninSantiagodeCubaonJuly17,1944.Dr.OrozcoreceivedhisPhDfromtheUniversityofHumboldtinBerlin,Germany.Forseveralyearshetaughtatthe“EscuelaNacionaldeArtesdeLaHabana”andactivelyparticipatedincongressandseminarsworldwide.In1979heworkedasanadvisorandanalystforUNESCOinColombia.Additionally,hetaughtpost-graduatecoursesinvariouscountriessuchasUniversityofPanama(1982),ConservatoryofRıodeJaneiro(1989),InstituteVicenteEmilioSojoinVenezuela(1991),UniversityofSalamancainEspana,UCLAintheUnitedStates(1992),andUniversityofChile(1996).Dr.OrozcopassedawayinHavana,CubaonMarch26,2013.PartofhiscollectionisdigitizedandavailableandpreservedindigitalformatattheDiazAyalaArchive.LowresolutionandlimitedaccessareavailableindPanther: http://dpanther.fiu.edu/dPanther/collections/doc

CASSETTE TAPES TheSoundandImageDepartmenthasperformedin-housedigitizationandpreservationofapproximately200cassettetapesthatarecurrentlyinriskofdeterioration.ThosematerialsarepartoftheDiazAyalaCollectionandDaniloOrozcocollection.
AUDIO/VIDEO ONLINE Over780audioandvideofileswereaddedtothedigitallibraryin2018/2019,making5,234totalfilesintheaudio/videoonlinecollection.Thecollectionreceived28,260viewsduringtheFY.

TheBoyntonBeachLibrarycollectiondigitizationandhostingwasmadepossiblethroughaBreakthroughDigitizationAwardfromtheSoutheastFloridaLibraryandInformationNetwork(SEFLIN).TheBoyntonBeachCityLibraryArchives&LocalHistoryCollectioncurrentlyconsistsof100digitizedphotographsdepictingthehistoryofthecity,datingbacktothe1890s.Photographsfromthiscollectionareavailableat:http://dpanther.fiu.edu/dPanther/collections/boy
VIRGINIA KEY BEACH PARK TRUST
FIU’sDepartmentofHistoryandLibraries’DigitalCollectionsCenterhavepartneredwiththeVirginiaKeyParkTrustonatwo-year,InstituteofMuseumandLibraryServices(IMLS)fundedgranttodigitizetheTrust’sarchives.TheVirginiaKeyBeachParkTrustcollectionincludesanoralhistoryandphotographiccollectioncontaininginterviewsfromactivistsandcitizenswhoparticipatedinorexperiencedSouthFloridasegregationandthemid1940’scivicactivismthatwasthefoundationforthecreationofthesegregatedVirginiaKeyBeachin
1945(nowHistoricVirginiaKeyBeachPark)anditscurrentrestorationthroughtheeffortsoftheVirginiaKeyBeachParkTrust.Intervieweesdiscusstheirpersonalbeliefs,politicalactivism,andcurrentissuesinvolvingtherestorationandpreservationofthebeach.Eachpersonuniquelyrecountstheirpersonalexperiencesandhistoriesaboutthebeach,includingstoriesaboutrelatives,friends,andbothpoliticalandpersonalbattlesinthesegregatedclimate.Eachintervieweetellstheirhistoryoftheparkinaunique,engagedway,offeringapersonaldetailedaccount,aswellasaplanofactiontoimplementamuseumandarejuvenatedhistoricalenvironment.Thereare2,795recordsinthecollectionand7,791files.http://dpanther.fiu.edu/dPanther/collections/vkt

Library:http://milemarkers.fiu.edu/.TheirworkfocusedoncourtcasesandrelateddocumentstellingthestoryoffreepeopleofcolorinFloridaafteritbecameaterritoryoftheUnitedStatesduringtheperiodofslavery.Thecasesinvolvethearrestanddetentionoffreepeopleofcolor,whowereprohibitedfromlivinginFloridaaccordingtoan1832actoftheTerritorialLegislature.Astheresearchhasshown,thisblanketprohibition,reflectingthefearsandracialantipathytowardAfricanAmericansandAfro-Caribbeans,wasoftenenforcedmoresporadicallythanthelawmightsuggest,owningtothecomplexentanglementsofAfricanAmericansandAfro-CaribbeansintheeconomyofKeyWestandparticipationonsailorsinshipsplyingthewatersoftheFloridaStraitsandCaribbean.

EQUITY AND ACCESS TO ARCHIVES THROUGH DIGITAL LIBRARY TRANSLATION AND TRANSCRIPTION SERVICES
ThisinitiativewasfundedbytheSocietyofAmericanArchivistsasacollaborativeprojectbetweentheDigitalCollectionsCenterandGISCenter.Fundingsupportedexplorationforthedevelopmentandincorporationoftranslationandtranscriptionfunctionalityintothedigitalarchives,dPantheranddLOC(http://dpanther.fiu.edu/andhttp://www.dloc.com/).FIUproposesthattranslationfunctionalitywillincreaseaccessfornon-EnglishspeakingpatronstodigitalarchiveswrittenorspokeninEnglishandvice-versaforcontentwrittenorspokeninotherlanguages.Translationtechnologieswillnotonlyensureadditionalaccesstocontent,butitwillalsoprovideadditionalmeasuresofpreservationformaterialscreatedinlanguagesnotcommonlyadoptedbyothercommunitiesworldwide.Additionally,incorporatingtranscriptionfunctionalityintothedigitallibrarysystemswillsupportcompliancewithSection504oftheRehabilitationActof1973andTitleIIoftheAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct(ADA).

DRY TORTUGAS NATIONAL PARK
TheFIUDigitalCollectionsCenterwasselectedtosupporttheNationalParksServiceinthecreationofanonlineexhibitoftheDryTortugas.ThisprojectwassponsoredbytheNationalParkServicethroughCooperativeEcosystemStudiesUnits(CESU)todevelopanonlineexhibitofphotographsandtextualmaterialsdocumentingFortJeffersoninthe1800s.TheexhibitwillaccompanyadigitalarchiveofmaterialshostedbytheFIULibraries.AgraduatestudentfromtheHistoryDepartmentwillassistindraftingtexttobeincludedintheexhibit,chroniclingthehistoryofFortJeffersonaswellasprovidingcontextualizationforthedigitalmaterials.Thestudentwillalsoassistinmetadatacreationandaddingthedigitalfilestotheonlinedigitalarchive.
AI FOR ARCHIVES: USING FACIAL RECOGNITION TO ENHANCE METADATA
FIUlibrarians,programmers,andcomputerscientistsintheDigitalCollectionsCenter,GISCenter,andFIUComputerScienceDepartmentwererecentlyawardedaLYRASISCatalystFundtoexplorewaystoutilizefacialrecognitionapplicationswithindigitalarchives.Awardparticipantswillconductqualitativetestsoncurrentfacialrecognitionapplicationmodelsusingdigitizedphotographsofindividualsinlocalhistoricarchives.Thefindingsofthisyear-longresearchprojectwillbepresentedinasurveypaper,inhopesitmayassistotherknowledgecommunitymemberswishingtoincorporateartificialintelligencetechnologyintotheirdigitalcollectionsandrepositories.
