MEASURING METHODOLOGY

The umbrella was photographed on a flat table and printed black and white. Then Trace the objects on the photos with pencil.Measure the real object with rulers and tapes.Annotate the measurement on the drawings.

There are two basic status as an umbrella which are opening and closing. Under two deiffer-ent status, the shape and size are different which are shown on 4 sketches.

An umbrella was made of two parts, fab-ric cover and steel bone structure. And the structure bone 8 same units.

In order to see the structure clearly, I re-moved the covering fabric. Then I measured the length of each bar of a signle unit and analysis how they are epanding by drawing.

Tension and compression analysis

The bone structure support and stretch the fabric above. As a result, the bone was un-der compression while the fabric is expand-ing.

The compression gets bigger when the it moves from A to A’, while the umbrella is expanding.A

One of the mean concepts is how the change of the length on one side influence the shape of the whole geometry figure. when one rigid geometric figure changes, the elastic covers above deform(expand in this case).

Umbrella can be seen as a ‘skin and bone ‘ system. It is made of steel bones and membrane skin. The skin is under tension and the bone is under compression.

For geometric forms, we can see triangles and quadrangle showed in the shape of bone structure. which can be used in reconfigured model.

Digital Model Process

Starting with draw-ing one bone in front window using ‘Pipe:Flat caps’

Daw a octagon at the center of um-brella using Plygon tool in top window.

Use ‘Array’ in ‘Transform’ along the octagon.Make 8 same repeating sructure arround center.The bone structure is complete.

Use ‘Retail Re-volve’ create the surface over the structure.

Complete the details of structure including the top and bottom.

Add blue color on the ‘Material’ Page.Capture the pic-ture using ‘Ren-der’.Or use -viewcap-turetofile.

Sketch Model

RECONFIGURED MODELI created a skin and bone system inspired by umbrella. I used wood sticks to create a structure with simple geometric forms like triangle and quadrangle. For the skin, instead of covering the bones with skin, I put the skin inside and try to push the membrane out of the structure in order to a sense of bubble.I also tried to add light in the bottom bubble structure which result in a amazing light effect.

1. Start with one simple geometric form using wood stick.

2. After finishing the base, I con-tinue to build the structure on the base. The wood stick follow simple rule to build up and twist to one direction.

3. Connect the wood stick.

4. stick the paper inside the struc-ture and make sure they work like bubble shape. Fiix them with glue.

5. Build the next layer up. Also stick the paper in.

Half finish look.

Under the protection of the ‘bubble‘, person is isolated by the stucture in order to have a quiet and personal space when sleeping.

When people want to sleep, they can get down on the table and sleep comfortablely without be-ing disturbed by people around you because you are isolated by the ‘bub-ble‘Also bubble gives people a sense of safe and com-fort.

Sharp Defense Umbrella

Three shapes

Imitate the close and open of an umbrella to generate three different shapes of triangles .

using the triangles to generate personal space and keep people in distance in order to create a safe space for sleeping.
