Digital Divide or Digital Difference?• The Top Five Take Outs
1. In closing the Digital Divide, we should be encouraging Digital Difference, rather than generic solutions, when choosing technology, software and apps purchases.
2. Digital difference is about matching teaching and learning to the technology, not the other way around!
3. Pedagogy should drive software, app, & Web 2.0 tool selection.

Digital Divide or Digital Difference?• The Top Five Take Outs
4. When choosing software and apps, less is more. Choose a few great open ended ones and explicitly teach their use to teachers and students. Allow for their authentic use by students.
5. Often the implementation of iPad programs in schools fits this model better, than netbook / notebook programs in schools do.

How do you match pedagogy with software / apps / web 2.0 tools?
• Firstly, what are the pedagogical overlays to your lesson planning?
• Inquiry learning?
• Personalised learning?
• Thinking Curriculum?
• Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy?
• e5 Instructional Model? ...................................................................etc.

Matching Pedagogy with software / apps / web 2.0
• Think about the pedagogical model that you use.
• How do you make this model understandable to other teachers and students?
• Is there a graphic to describe the model?
• Can you describe this model, listing all the actions that relate to the teaching and learning that occurs under it?
• What software, apps, & Web 2.0 tools will best be used by teachers and students to meet those actions?
• Don’t pick too many!
• Explicitly teach students how to use those software, apps, & Web 2.0 tools that you have selected.

What’s an example of this?
• Let’s say that Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy underlines your lesson planning...
• What does this look like?
• What teaching and learning actions relate to each thinking skill?
• What are the bestsoftware, apps, web 2.0 tools for each action?

Teaching software / apps / web 2.0 tools explicitly.
• Play with them, learn them, teach them.
• If you don’t have time for that, look on the web for resources to help you. A good place to start is the DEECD Digital Learning Showcase as this does link pedagogy to software tutorials and other resources.
• Search the web for tutorials. You Tube is useful.

Teaching software / apps / web 2.0 tools explicitly.
• Don’t teach the skill students need out of context, there is little purpose in doing it this way!
• Instead teach them, when the students need them, i.e. when they are completing authentic tasks!
• Investigate making screencasts.
