Technical Applications
The system comprises a probe fitted with guide wheels housing a Solid State (MEMS) accelerometer, connected by a graduated cable to the cable reel and hub, which transmits readings to the PDA via a Bluetooth link. The probe is inserted into the keyways of specially installed inclinometer casing, such as Soil Instruments Easy Connect Casing. The casing is either embedded in concrete fill materials or secured to the structure to be monitored.
The sensor enables a vertical deflection profile between the probe axis and the horizontal plane to be recorded. Measurements of tilt versus probe distance along the
inclinometer casing are used to compute the horizontal profile (given in mm) of the installed casing from true horizontal.
The sprung loaded guide wheels on the probe, in conjunction with internal keyways in the casing, ensure constant alignment. The casing is designed to be robust but remain flexible enough to bend relative to any vertical movements taking place.
The MEMS accelerometer, which is sensitive to the inclination of the probe in relation to the Horizontal plane, registers the deflection.
An initial set of base readings are taken at 0.5m intervals within the casing, measured by graduation markers on the control cable. Subsequent sets of readings are taken at the same points.
The vertical deflection of the casing is obtained by integration of the observed vertical deviation (as displayed and stored in the rugged design PDA) from the initial base readings.
This data is processed using the horizontal version of In-Site inclinometer Data Processing Software. Comparison of successive casing profiles indicates the location, direction, magnitude and rate of change of vertical movement.
Key Benefits
the Digital Bluetooth, uniaxial horizontal Inclinometer provides high resolution and accurate profiles of settlement or heave in geotechnical and civil engineering structures such as dams, embankments, bridge piers and abutments, storage tanks and landfill areas
utilises the very latest in Bluetooth and mems (micro-electro-mechanical) technology in the design of the digital inclinometer systems which provide highly accurate readings
offers fast and simple data gathering
a Kevlar reinforced cable provides strength and significant weight reductions
sturdy but light and portable, can be easily carried and operated by one person
