  • This product is my entire 8th grade English curriculum, but it could work for 7-10 grades depending on your states standards. Background about me: I have been teaching 7/8 grade English for 10 years. I have worked with standard, inclusion, and advanced classes. Awards: Two years ago I won teacher of the year for my division and technology teacher of the year for my region. Standardized Test Scores In my state, (which is Virginia and has SOLS) students take two standardized tests in reading and writing/editing concepts. In the past four years of using this curriculum I have create I earned an average of 97.5% in writing and 93.75% in reading, which isnt too shabby! Snapshot of my classroom: As soon as my students walk into my classroom they have a bell ringer that covers all aspects of topics covered within the classroom, a journal question that requires them to write 3-5 sentences daily. (Journal Qs really help to get to know students personally), and a random fact of the day (which kids love). I made it my personal goal a few years ago to introduce almost every literary concept in my classroom with songs and movie clips so that the segue into identifying them in literature would be smoother and less painful for the kids! I scoured every resource I could think of to find songs and movie clips to do this. Every single literary concept I teach has either a prezi with movie clips and/or songs. Kids LOVE this! I created an entire year program in which students interact with root words, prefixes, suffices, context clues and text structures three times a week. Monday students get a list of 6 roots/prefixes that they must define and place in context or the correct multiple meaning. On Wednesdays students read a high interest nonfiction article with Mondays prefixes and roots within the article (they must use knowledge of the roots and context to determine the meaning of the word). There are 5 comprehension and analytical questions on each article. On Fridays students take a 20 question multiple-choice test on the words of the week. For writing I teach a modified version of Step-Up-to-Writing which incorporates colors into the writing process, which has worked wonders for me! I like to give students a wide range of writing prompts so they are prepared for any possibility. I also like to err on the side of caution when it comes to editing and proofreading and have my students edit a myriad of sentences. My students have weekly homework that they must read one assigned story from the textbook and fill out a short story form on the story that we go over every Friday. They are also given a Paragraph of the Week on Mondays that is due on Friday. All of the novels I teach have pre reading prezis that I have created to get the students to buy into the book before we start reading! What is included in this product?: If you download the free sample I have included my weekly lesson plans for the entire school year. EVERY. SINGLE. THING. (Minus one comma program) that you read about in those lesson plans are included in this product. Learn more about me at:

  • My classes range from 60 minutes to 75 minutes. If your classes are shorter or longer, just take out a novel study

or use some of the extra lessons (since there are a ton!) I use my 25 weeks of computer lab activities for the English classroom to fulfill my research components. Each week students are introduced to a different genre of writing for homework in: An entire year of paragraphs

(or essays) of the week. Eventually the paragraphs of the week will become essays and I require my students to choose a different genre each time.

I use my schools textbook for the weekly reading homework and let the students choose the text based on the topic of the week. I know that some people like more structure, or dont have a textbook, so I have included a suggested list of fiction, nonfiction, and poems (with links).

I know that not every school week will have the prescribed 5 days so dont let that phase you if you have to move some days around. This is a basic structure to get you going! I would say to always keep handing out homework out on Mondays and RPS every MWF to keep a structured routine kids can count on.

    RPS Common Core Correlation: o R.I. 8.1 o R.I. 8.2 o R.I. 8.3 o R.I. 8.4

    o R.I. 8.5 o L 8.3 o L 8.4 o L 8.

After the first few weeks of introduction RPS should only take between 10-15 minutes. If it is taking

longer, really push your kids by putting up a timer or tell them what they dont get done will be homework (that will get them moving faster!).

I am happy to offer discounts for multiple licenses or discuss my cheaper digital curriculum version with you. Email me at: [email protected]

    ~Happy teaching!~

During the first novel of the year, we will read the same novel together. I usually choose The Outsiders because the students love it so much. COMPLETE novel studies I have are:

o Complete Night by Elie Wiesel Novel Study o Monster by Walter Dean Myers Complete Novel Study o New and Improved! Outsiders Novel Study with answer keys

I will alternate between me reading aloud, the students reading aloud, students reading silently, and a book on tape. Some days we go over the chapter questions as a group, sometimes I will have them discuss in partners, and towards the end of the novel I break them into groups to hold literature circles (after modeling how one should run/look). By the time we get to our second novel of the year students can choose their own novels and will already know how to hold their own lit circles. This saves a lot of hassle and time!
