Three Programming and MonitoringMethods Provide OPTIMum Flexibility

Stand Alone

OPTIMizer

A hand held programmer, used to pro-gram and monitor individual trip units. It plugs directly into the trip unit and ac-cesses, displays, and configures infor-mation from the OPTIM Trip Unit. Anoperator can:

■ Complete initial system setup.

■ Configure the system.

■ Display information.

■ Test trip unit performance.

■ Set system password.

Breaker Interface Module

The panel mounted Breaker InterfaceModule (BIM) is used to program andmonitor OPTIM Trip Units at the assem-bly…and access, display, and configureinformation from OPTIM Trip Units. Anycombination of OPTIM Trip Units and/orDigitrip RMS 810 and 910 Trip Units* and/or IQ Energy Sentinels™ can communicatewith the BIM. It duplicates OPTIMizercapabilities while providing these addi-tional features:

■ Expanded energy monitoring. Anoperator can set addresses for groupenergy monitoring and group energyreadings.

■ Local and remote indication andalarming.

■ Expanded communications capabilitieswith OPTIM Trip Units, Digitrip RMSTrip Units, and IQ Energy Sentinels.

Sub-Network IMPACC Communications

The IMPACC System

It provides programming and monitoringcapabilities from a personal computer.

■ All OPTIM programming, configuration, advance warning, diagnostic, monitor-ing, and control capabilities can beaccessed from a PC using IMPACCSeries III software.

■ A coordination software package thatdisplays, configures, and coordinatestime-current protection curves.

■ Energy Billing Software (stand aloneapplication specific package) providescapabilities to determine energyusage data by individual depart-ments or tenants in a facility…andthen creates “electric bills.”

■ Waveform and harmonic display soft-ware allows displays of captured wave-forms for phase-to-phase, phase-to-neutral, and neutral-to-ground voltages. The display can also include totalharmonic distortion (THD) and indi-vidual harmonic currents of phasecurrents A, B, C, neutral, and ground.

ProblemA manufacturing facility continues to setnew peak kWh demand levels with theutility. New machinery, increased produc-tion on several manufacturing lines, andincreases in HVAC usage, are thought tobe the reason. The main switchboardalready has a meter to monitor and mea-sure kWh, but this will not alert the custom-er when the system is approaching thepeak demand threshold or “break out”those areas responsible for the increases.

ProblemA consultant is upgrading a waste watertreatment facility where several variablefrequency drives are being added to theexisting distribution system. This site hasexperienced harmonic problems in thepast. Knowing that the variable frequencydrives may create harmonics on the sys-tem, the consultant would like the abilityto monitor their harmonics, in the eventpreventative measures are needed.

ProblemA major university has always used fus-ible switches for their power distributionsystems, but would like to utilize moldedcase circuit breakers on their next projectdue to the advantages circuit breakersprovide. The problem lies with coordinat-ing the switchboard’s feeder breakerswith this upstream fuse.

SolutionOPTIM 1050 Trip Units monitor and mea-sure power and energy. Specific loads(production lines, machinery, HVAC, etc.)can now provide power and energy in-formation. This unique feature allows acustomer to analyze and allocate actualenergy usage on a department or produc-tion line basis rather than as percentageof the total energy bill. Also, energy alarm-ing allows the customer to receive analarm whenever a preset kWh level isreached, allowing the customer to shedsome noncritical loads or adjust their energyusage so that peak kWh is not exceeded.

SolutionOPTIM 1050 Trip Units monitor and mea-sure harmonics. THD alarming will detecta change in power quality and alert thecustomer. Their sensitivity, up to the 27thharmonic, will identify the harmonic con-tent and help the customer solve even themost demanding applications wherepower quality is an issue.

SolutionOPTIM Trip Units support an I4t long de-lay versus the traditional I2t for allowingclose coordination with fuses. Now cus-tomers can mix circuit breakers and fuseswhile assuring selectivity.

ProblemA manufacturing facility built in 1990 isrequired to replace several process lineswith a more advanced automated manu-facturing line. The new protection re-quirements are quite different from the oldprotection settings, and now, the original600 ampere circuit breaker does not co-ordinate well with the distribution system.

SolutionOPTIM Trip Units are programmable andprovide virtual infinite settings. Settingincrements are increased by a factor often as compared to conventional frontadjustable trip units. As your distributionsystem changes, you simply reprogram(reshape) the trip curve, to guaranteeselectivity.

ProblemAn automotive plant needs to increaseproduction capacity on an existing as-sembly line but wants greater reliabilityand reduced “downtime” to support theinvestment.

SolutionOPTIM Trip Units support zone interlock-ing. The plant engineer is able to extendthis protection throughout the assemblyline to provide better isolation and greaterreliability. Also, with built-in communica-tions and alarm capability, the whole sys-tem can be monitored to provide the plantengineering staff with critical data to re-duce “downtime.”

* Refer to page 11 for additional information.
