Dear Larry, On behalf of the Board and Staff of JewishColumbus, Mazel Tov on being presented the Edgar M. Bronfman Award, an award named for one so well-known for both diplomacy and philanthropy. Congratulations not just to you, but to Hillel International for recognizing an individual who embodies community service as viewed through a global lens. This incredible honor is well deserved and places you in your rightful place in the company of other change-makers who endeavor to transform the status quo and who that have done so much for the Jewish community. Your sense of optimism for Hillel’s mission and its future is contagious and inspiring.

Student Leader Spotlight

Student Leadership Story

Destiny is not your typical Queens College commuter student - she comes all the way from San Antonio, Texas! Destiny has shown a deep commitment to community-building, creating welcoming spaces and inclusion.

It is not easy coming from far away and being a student at a commuter school and Destiny dove right in, joining the Jewish Learning Fellowship program her first year on campus.

She now works as an Engagement Intern helping students like her do the same.

Mazel tov to my wise counsel and trusted friend,

Larry.

Thank you for doing themost challenging work

with grace and flair and making us all look good

in the process.

— Tina —

For Tina:I have devoted my career to studying leaders and leadership,

striving to best understand how leaders succeed. The answer is always some combination of commitment, passion, knowledge,

skills, emotional intelligence and timing.

Like most people, I choose to follow leaders who inspire me, who have integrity, who care more about

the cause than the credit.

Tina, for me, you have embodied these very qualities. You have taught me so much. And at its core, I am

humbled by your unwavering devotion to Jewish students, who have always been your leadership north star.

Thank you for bringing me along on your Hillel journey.

And most of all, let me say that to be honored alongside you, is the biggest honor of all.

With abiding gratitude,

Larry Moses

“HE [RABBI TARFON] USED TO SAY: IT IS NOT YOUR DUTY TO FINISH THE WORK, BUT NEITHER ARE YOU FREE TO DESIST FROM IT.” Pirke Avot 2:16

Tina and Larry-

You both show me the wisdom of this teaching every day.

You approach each moment as an opportunity to make a difference in the world. You never seem to get discouraged (at

least you never show it), and you never, ever desist from the task at hand. Hillel is measurably better because of your involvement, while your impact

on my life is beyond measure.

Amy, Sam, and Charlie join me and the entire community in honoring you this evening.

Todah rabba!

Jacob FertigNew York University Class of 2019

Student Leadership Story

From working as an Engagement Intern to serving as the President of Kesher, to the social media chair of NYU’s Hillel Board, Jacob is always eager to build community and create meaningful experiences for his peers.

Although Jacob was intent on becoming a filmmaker prior to college, he is now considering going to Rabbinical School.

Jacob says that the Bronfman Center taught him the value of “leaning into discomfort”, and although going to Rabbinical School may not be the most ‘comfortable’ choice, he says,“to be the leader that I hope to be in this world, in my community, and for myself, I need to lean into the discomfort.”

Congratulations to Tina and Larry on receiving

Hillel’s Renaissance and Edgar M. Bronfman awards.

Tina, thank you for your friendship,

steadfast leadership, and unwavering commitment

There aren’t many students who get pluralism as an ideal, as a way of life, as a religious conviction, the way Annie Cannon does. It’s remarkable. Annie advocates for practices she doesn’t personally observe and organizes events that cater to religious needs other than her own in order to create a greater sense of religious and spiritual unity on campus.

Annie never just asks herself, “how can I get what I want?” but, rather “how can we all lean into discomfort just enough to share in this community together without having to forgo our deeply felt convictions?” It’s a paradigm shift for the typical student, and Annie leads the way on that journey.
