Don’t let house hunting spoil your Christmas!So, it’s that time of year when things start getting a bit hectic – Christmas is on its way and with it comes the onset of exams and, well, stress!

One thing you shouldn’t have to worry about is where you’re going to live next year – and although it seems ridiculously early, a lot of students do feel pressurised into getting this sorted. So, this issue, we’ve got lots of useful advice and information about house hunting. Check out p.3 and p.4.

This month is also your opportunity to get involved and have your say about living in University accommodation by taking part in the Accommodation Survey.

I know what it’s like when yet another survey lands in your inbox, but by completing this one your voice really will be heard, your opinion really does count and changes will be introduced based upon what you say. Plus, you can also win great prizes, including an iPod touch. So what are you waiting for? Find out more on page 15.

In the run up to Christmas the residences are the best place to be – find

out about the Christmas Carol Concert on p.4. To add to the Christmas spirit, we want to see which group of housemates can create the best window display! Not only will you make your accommodation look super festive, you can also win beer and chocolate if your window is deemed the best – see p.4 for more info.

Arm yourself with accommodation info!How to find the perfect place to live next year

Ok, so it probably feels like you’ve only just moved in and you’re already being told to think about where you want to live next year!

Many of Sheffield’s private landlords and agencies target students earlier and earlier each year and there’s a few things you need to know before embarking on your house hunt.

1. There is absolutely no need to rush into signing a contract. Agencies and landlords who tell you otherwise should not be trusted!

2. Take your time thinking about who you want to live with. The zany course mate who you think is hilarious at the moment may not be the person you want to spend the next year living with.

3. Get armed with as much information as possible about your accommodation options. What initially seems like a good deal because it offers a low rent might not be when you consider that it’s a 52 week contract and that the utility costs are likely to be higher in an older property. Many students have been caught out by attractive weekly rents to then be hit with problems later on, so make sure that you’re not one of them!

4. It’s worth considering accommodation where your bills are included in your rent. You’ll never have to sit huddled together for warmth in the depths of winter for fear of the humongous bill landing on your doorstep a few weeks later and it enables you to budget much more easily.

5. There are some unscrupulous landlords out there. So, along with the Union and the University, we recommend only looking at accommodation which conforms to the standards set down in the Sheffield Responsible Landlord Scheme and at properties which have been inspected. The best place to look for these types of properties is at www.sheffield.ac.uk/housingfinder

6. Have fun! Finding a new home shouldn’t be stressful so take your time and enjoy the process.

Where to begin your house hunt?

With so many places to find accommodation in Sheffield, how do you know where to start looking? Well, as Jenni Hastings, Welfare Officer mentions on p.4 – not all agencies and landlords have got your best interests at heart so it’s really important that you look in the right places.

propertywithUS, located on Level 4 in University House is a really good place to start. All their properties are on the Housing Finder website, so you know they comply with expected standards.

Plus, the staff who work there have loads of knowledge about the Sheffield housing market and can offer advice and guidance about your accommodation options.

Get your foot in the door!There are so many things to think about when house hunting – where to live, who to live with, how much to pay and so on. Hopefully you love where you live now in University accommodation (remember to have your say in the Accommodation Survey), and if you do, why not come back for more?!

Here at Digs, we are a bit biased – we think University accommodation is great and we’d recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere to live next year. One of our favourite things is that you know what you’re getting – no bills! It may not sound much, but they do add up and knowing what you’ll be spending goes a long way in helping you budget and keep on track of how much you’ve got left at the end of each month.

We’ve had a sneak preview of what’s available next year in University accommodation and it includes some great value houses for up to 15 students and brand new apartments, and the University have frozen this year’s rents which means it’s even more of a bargain! Plus, whether you’re in a group or looking on your own they’ve got something for all sizes and budgets!

Christmas Carols at The Edge

Look out for the Christmas Carol festivities at The Edge Piazza on Wednesday 16 December.

Starting at 6.30pm, the student society Brass and Wind Band will be on hand and are open to requests for your favourite festive tunes! For any X-Factor hopefuls out there, why not come down and join in with the carol singing to really get you in the festive mood.

If that’s not Christmassy enough, there’ll be free mince pies and mulled wine on hand to warm you up and festive stalls to keep you entertained.

Plus, the Chaplaincy have kindly agreed to offer a complimentary gift wrapping service – perfect for those of you who aren’t too neat with your wrapping! This event is free to attend – no ticket needed!

Window winter wonderlands

My spies tell me that loads of you have been decorating your flat windows of late with some rather fabulous results. So, with the holiday season on the way, we want you to get into the Christmas spirit and create your very own window winter wonderland!

Occasionally, you may have to leave the comfort of your bed for lectures or a night out with your mates but if you are anything like us you love your bed, especially now it's getting colder and darker! We wouldn’t want to be kicked out of our beds by visiting friends and family and we’re sure you feel the same!

Well now guest beds are available in University accommodation – perfect for when people come and visit you. Although it does mean that no longer have any excuses as to why your mum can’t come and stay – still, at least she might take you shopping!

Prices start at just £20.15 per night for a standard room with shared bathroom going up to £46 for a double en-suite room, so it’s great value too.

Take your time to get the right digs!

It may feel as though you’ve only just moved into your accommodation and already you’re being targeted by landlords and letting agencies, triggering the worry of where you will live next year.

Before you start to panic and sign the nearest housing contract, bear in mind that there are more beds than students here in Sheffield, which means you can ignore landlord’s claims that everywhere will get snapped up in the next few months.

It’s also worth remembering that most of you haven’t been living here for that long and so it’s perfectly normal to not have any idea of who your future housemates are yet.

Even if you think you know

who you want to live with, there is absolutely no rush to make any decisions before Christmas.

Remember, people change, and the group you partied with throughout Freshers’ Week may not necessarily be the people you want to share a house with for the whole of the next academic year.

When you do feel ready to begin house hunting, make sure you’re armed with the knowledge to ensure it’s a positive experience.

The student advice centre produces a great booklet packed full of tips and essential information to make finding somewhere to live as hassle free as possible. I would also advise that you make use of

the list of University registered properties, available through propertywithUS in University House and on the Housing Finder (www.shef.ac.uk/housingfinder).

The list of new properties is released on 9 November but rooms will be available throughout the year and, in some cases, students can find themselves getting a better deal if they hold off until later on in the year to sign a contract.

Remember, it’s your move and your choice – just make sure you’re armed with the information to help you make the right one.

Lucky eatwithUS cardholders were recently treated to Formal Dinners at Tapton and The Endcliffe Village. Included as part of the eatwithUS food and drinks package, they proved a great success as students revelled in the opportunity to get dressed up for the night!

Many donned their best suits and cocktail dresses for an evening of fine dining from the University’s award winning chefs.

The three course meal with wine included dishes such as roast rump of lamb and a decadent light and dark chocolate tart.

The evenings proved to be a big hit with residents and made a welcome change from the standard student fare of pot noodles that many non eatwithUS card holders have to put up with! Leroy

Suleman from Tapton commented: “It was really nice to have something different on offer – I certainly never expected such an occasion to be included as part of my eatwithUS package.”

Due to the success of the Formal Dinners, plans are in place for another treat for eatwithUS card holders in term two which promises to be bigger and better than the last! Watch this space for more details...

Still open for business

To get you in the Christmassy mood, a traditional three course Christmas meal will be available on Thursday 10 December.

Come along with your friends and flatmates from 5pm at The Edge and Tapton Dining Rooms for three courses of all your festive favourites including traditional turkey with all the trimmings and an indulgent dessert all for just £5.95!

On main campus you’ll have noticed lots of changes around the Students’ Union and University House as the building work for the Union gets underway.

All of your favourite eateries will still be open throughout the building works, but the way you get to them might change!

The easiest way to get to The Common Room, City View Café and the International Food Court is still through the main entrance to University House. This is also where you’ll find propertywithUS as they have relocated to the University House reception on level 4 during the building work.

And if you fancy a hot, delicious wrap, Wrapid is still in its usual place – follow the signs for the “north” entrance to the Union.

Remember there are lots of great places to eat on campus, including Jessop Café and the IC Café and if you’re lucky enough to have an eatwithUS card you can spend your allowance in nearly all of them!

Fire safety is really important. That’s why we had to get you out of bed during the fire alarm drills last month – we wanted to make sure you know how to leave your accommodation as quickly and safely as possible should there be a fire.

A fire in your accommodation is one of those worst case scenarios that we never expect to happen but that can endanger your life and those of your flatmates and friends, not to mention cause damage to your belongings and room.

All University properties are fitted with smoke alarms so if there is a fire, the alarm will sound and you’ll know to evacuate. But there are some simple things that you can do to prevent fires starting and make sure that you stay safe.

Over half of all fires in the home are caused by cooking accidents, so always take care and don’t leave your kitchen, especially when cooking with hot oil. You should also avoid using a chip pan – they are dangerous plus oven chips are just as tasty!

Midnight munchies may seem like a great idea but trying to cook when you’ve had a few isn’t the brightest of ideas! If you’re feeling hungry after a night out, get some food on your way home to avoid any potential risks.

Candles and fairy lights may create a twinkly atmosphere in your room, but

you shouldn’t be using them in University accommodation and nothing will kill the mood faster than a threat to your life by fire. Fires can start in seconds so you should never leave candles unattended and keep them away from curtains, fabrics and paper.

Smoking is prohibited in University accommodation and if caught, you will face disciplinary action. Plus, statistically more people die in fires caused by smoking than in fires caused by anything else so, if you do smoke (outside of course) make sure you stub out your cigarettes and dispose of them carefully.

If the worst happens…

If there’s a fire in your accommodation get out as quickly and safety as you can - don’t delay to save your belongings or investigate the fire. Then call Security on 0114 222 4444. They’ll respond to the fire and call the emergency services for you.

You can now do even more to help the environment at The Ranmoor Village as glass, plastic and tin recycling facilities are available in the bin areas by the top entrances to Wimberry and in between the two Ramshaw blocks.

A big thank you to those of you who have already been doing your bit in the other locations, but if you’re unsure where the recycling points are, here’s a quick reminder:

There are also blue paper and card recycling bins in your accommodation. Remember, to squash flat all boxes, remove any plastic bags and not recycle any food contaminated waste, such as pizza boxes.

Real ale. Yes ladies and gents, real ale is back. Head down to your very own real ale pub, the University Arms adjacent to the Information Commons, for one of the best selections Sheffield has to offer. With one house ale and an ever changing selection of four guest ales all from local breweries, it’s a beer drinker’s heaven!

Where do you live and which blocks do you cover?I live in Opal 2 and look after Block B.

How are you finding living in the city? The location says it all...I’m a city girl

and there’s no better place to be! I can be at the Union in a mere five minutes or shopping in town within ten...there are no excuses for getting bored! The best thing about living in the city is bumping into lots of people; faces that I may or may not have seen in a while.

Tell us a bit about yourself – what are your hobbies and interests? I like all forms of dances, but learning Salsa has really given me a new thrill. I’m a secret Scrabble lover too...my interest arose from playing competitively when I lived in Kenya for a short while! I enjoy travelling and seeing the many natures of this world...I went to Niagara Falls this summer and I felt like I was in a place

that was so beautiful, it didn’t seem quite possible. Best of all, I love to spend time with my family and friends.

Tell us a secret!I can’t resist biscuits...please hide them from me!

What made you decide to become a Residential Mentor?My first year here made me appreciate how vital it is to have someone to talk to...sure, you can talk to your friends, but sometimes it’s not enough. It was great having a Mentor who was a bit older and more experienced in ‘Uni life’ to talk to. It gave me a sense of security and I wanted other people to feel the same way.

What’s your favourite thing about doing the job?It’s full of surprises...you have to be proactive and enthusiastic. I love meeting people from various backgrounds and getting a little sneak peak into their culture and lifestyle. With this job, the saying ‘you learn something new every day’ is indeed true!

Each Committee will be responsible for leading their student community, running activities, events, sports and volunteering and deciding how to spend the Communities budget – this budget is made up of all the Community Contributions paid by you and every student!

Each Committee is made up of 12 positions: Chair, Vice-Chair / Secretary, Activities Rep, Entertainments Rep (x5), Sports Rep, Volunteering / Charity Rep and a Marketing and Publicity Rep.

You can find out who is standing for each position and what they want to do for your Community by visiting your Official Student Community Facebook groups, the Communities webpages on the Union website – plus the information will be up on your Community Elections notice boards – The Edge Hub, The Ridge Bar/reception, Tapton reception and Opal 2 reception.

All candidates will be creatively campaigning to get your vote too so look out for them in your Community!

On the voting nights themselves, each candidate will be doing a short speech and giving it one final push to convince you to vote for them!

Voting will take place via ballot box then as the count begins and the votes are verified, the Results Parties kick off!

Whilst you wait for the results to be announced, enjoy a DJ, drinks, nibbles and cakes!

Over 150 students from Ranmoor and City Communities went ice-skating last month for a bargainous £1!

After the massive success of the ice-skating trip during Intro, Annie and Lauren from the Communities Team received loads of requests from City and Ranmoor residents for another one to be put on for them!

Students from Endcliffe Community have also requested an ice-skating trip, which is planned to take place at the beginning of December.

The four Communities celebrated Halloween with massive events at The Edge, The Ridge, Tapton and the Students’ Union.

Games, fancy dress, themed drinks, DJs, freebies and amazing décor were on offer at this spooky spectacular!

The ‘Endcliffe Scream’ event saw students pack out The Edge Bar and High Tor where the main attraction was the mighty Halloween Eliminator, a massive inflatable with students fighting it out against each other!

Tapton’s ‘Thriller’ ran it’s very own Block Thriller Dance-Off and went messy with flour, treacle and apple-bobbing.

Students from City Community had a great time at the Union’s ‘Howl-a-Scream Ball’, complete with a Space zombie party, killer clowns and horror films in the cinema!

Ranmoor hosted ‘Rave from the Grave’, complete with a few Halloween classics sung out on karaoke - and not wanting to miss out on that inflatable action, they made sure students had a great time with the huge Halloween Pole Joust!

Paint with paper onto your very own photo frame! This easy way to craft involves simply gluing special arty paper onto a hard surface to produce a smooth texture and real paint effect. You choose the paper, making the perfect gift for anyone, or maybe just yourself!

Learn techniques and theory to enable you to perform a rejuvenating holistic face massage. Ooh la la! This workshop is a whole load of fun wrapped up in a frilly skirt! High kicks, skirt swishes, and laughter-induced tummy aches suitable for all dance levels. It's the right kind of Can Can for those who Can't Can't (yet) but would like to. IMPORTANT: Bring lots of water to drink, and a swishy skirt (to be worn as it is, or over your trousers).

Mahjong is an ancient game originating from Asia, involving skill, strategy & calculation as well as a certain amount of luck. Likened to Rummy, the game involves drawing tiles & then replacing them to make sets. Suitable for all.

We know what you’re thinking… not another survey… I’ve got better things to be doing… my opinions won’t be listened to anyway…

Well, your opinion does count and will be listened to. Last year, over 1,600 residents completed the survey which resulted in real changes in their Communities. The only way the accommodation team can know what they’re

doing well and what needs to be improved is if you tell them.

So, if you were impressed by the speedy response when you reported a maintenance problem or you would have liked to know more details about your accommodation before you arrived – complete the survey and let them know!
