SCHOOL STATEMENT: February 2015
Puketapu School (established in 1979/opened in 1980) is a full primary school (Year 0-8) and serves in a decile 4k community. It has a roll of between 200 and 250. Of these, 40% are New Zealand European, 45% are Maori, 9% Pacifika and 6% are of other cultural backgrounds. Puketapu School serves the children of Bell Block Suburb (New Plymouth City) with some children also attending from outside the immediate area. The Board of Trustees places high priority on providing a dynamic teaching and learning environment. They constantly endeavour to improve student achievement. The School’s physical environment is both attractive and functional. Of special note is the large field area and the accessibility to the sea and walkways and the magnificent view of the mountain. Financial management fully supports current programmes and maximises the availability of funds for the current year’s practice. There is a major focus is on Literacy, Numeracy, Physical Education and Physical Activity. Professional Development is available in a comprehensive programme of staff training. A significant investment has been made to ICT to support the teaching and learning process. The school management system is MUSAC (Edge) and the relevant Professional Development with all staff, (admin and teachers) is been undertaken to meet the need. The parent community contribute with the payment of a school donaton and other fund raising activities. An “open door” policy is promoted to ensure that all who wish to participate, contribute and/or observe the school in action are encouraged to do so. A strong belief in the importance of partnership between home and school is clearly demonstrated by the involvement across the school of our wider community. PROCEDURAL SECTION
Puketapu School will lodge a copy of its annually updated Charter to the Ministry of Education at the beginning of the school year. This Charter will include the school’s Annually Updated Targets for improvement.
The Annual Report will be lodged with the Ministry of Education each year after the Board of Trustees Annual Meeting.
Targets for student achievement will be identified by:
Analysis of school wide assessment data. Information gathered through staff discussion and moderation. National trends focus. National Standards
Puketapu School will consult its community, including its Maori community, on a regular basis as part of its three year cycle of self-review.
Puketapu School will develop policies and procedures that reflect the community and the unique position of Maori. All reasonable steps will be taken to provide instruction in Tikanga Maori and Te Reo Maori. Requests for full time instruction will be responded to as follows;
Sharing of basic programme as provided. Further opportunities through additional resources and use of local resource people. Suggest the option of full time instruction through dual enrolment in the Correspondence School. Share information regarding the local kura te pi’ipi’inga kakano mai I rangiatea .

Education of Maori Students The school tries to provide an environment to ensure that our Maori children feel comfortable, confident and welcome at the school. Their Maori culture and language are respected and we do this through a range of programmes and activities such as;
- The Treaty of Waitangi is respected - Teachers endorse the cultural competencies of Maori learners as outlined in Tataiako - The Puketapu School vision is in both English and Maori - Teachers’ planning will incorporate aspects of Te O Maori - Te Reo is integrated into all learning - Differing learning styles of Maori children are acknowledged. - There will be Maori Board of Trustee representatives - Regular consultation with the Maori community - A budget is provided for the purchase of Maori resources and support - School signs reflect our bicultural culture - The school has an atmosphere of inclusion and respect - The school supports the local Marae Muru Raupatu - Powhiri is based on Te Atiawa iwi tikanga. - Powhiri will depend on the occasion - The National anthem will be sung in both languages - Waiata at assemblies - There will be provision for kapahaka for the whole school and performance roopu - Staff can greet people in Te Reo
Maori achievement is identified through assessment procedures and reported to the various interested parties. Maori families that require more will be guided to the total Te Reo immersion school being TePi’ipiinga Kakano Mai I Rangiatea.

Use of Puketapu School Resources

of the Inquiry cycle. All Professional Development supports student achievement. For 2015, the third year of PLD in Mathematics
provided by Te Toi Tupu, Accelerated Learning in Literacy and Life Fundamental skills in Physical Education will be
the curriculum focuses. The school management system is MUSAC (Edge) and the relevant Professional Development with all staff, (admin
and teachers) is being undertaken to meet the need. N4L in 2015 Implementation of the 5 and 10 year property plan will support student learning and achievement.
