What is Dimensional Weight Pricing?

What is this?

Dimensional weight reflects package density, which is the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.

Earlier in 2014, UPS and FedEx announced new Dimensional Weight Pricing that would take effect on December 29, 2014 for ALL packages shipped. Prior to December 29th UPS and FedEx would use dimensional weight pricing on packages less than 3 cubic feet.

Why would they do this?

But Why?

Ever get a package with a lot of filler and air pillows in the box only to dig through to find you t-shirt that you ordered?

Well that is because the shipper used a much bigger box than was actually necessary. This caused too much space to be taken up on the back of the UPS/FedEx Truck. Since that space is limited by volume and not weight the carrier has come up with a way to bill for that extra space.

This means… DIMENSIONAL WEIGHT PRICING!

How do I calculate this?

How do I figure this out?

Calculating Dimensional Weight is Easy:

Length x Width x Height166

This will give you the dimensional weight of your package. Now, take the actual weight and compare it to the dimensional weight. The greater of the 2 numbers is what UPS/FedEx will use for billing.

What now?

1. Evaluate your packaging. Make sure that you are using the appropriate size boxes for your product.

2. Look at other options outside of corrugated boxes. Examples would be bubble mailers or polly bags.

3. Talk with your UPS/FedEx Representative to make sure you understand the impact on your business. Utilize any tools or options they can offer to limit the impact.
