Life Cycle Assessment of a luminaire

Eco-balance (Life Cycle Assessment)ISO 14040 The energy consumption of a luminaire was analysed in accordance with ISO 14040, the international standard for drawing up an eco-balance.

1% raw materials

7% production

1% transport

90% operation

1% recycling

From raw materials right through to disposal. An eco-balance assesses the environmental impact of products throughout their entire life cycle. Systematic investigations performed on luminaires have shown that their operation has a decisive influence on the eco-balance. Operation provides by far the greatest scope for saving both the environment and costs. 90% of the energy used by a luminaire is consumed during its operation. The proportion of energy accounted for by raw materials, production, transport and recycling is just 10%.

Dimming Manual dimming cuts energy consumption by 30% compared with a non-dimmable lighting solution. The brightness of luminaires is adjusted to suit particular activities by using a momentary-action switch.

Dimming + presence control Power is only used when actually needed. Fitting a presence detector, combined with manual dimming, boosts potential savings by 50%.

Dimming + presence detector + daylight-based control Intelligent lighting management with dimmable luminaires and presence detectors as well as daylight sensors taps into the full energy-saving potential of modern lighting systems. They consume up to 70 percent less energy.

Potential lighting savings19% of all the power gener-ated worldwide is used for lighting alone. 69% percent of this is used for office, industrial and outdoor light-ing.

29 million tonnes of CO2

75% of office and indus-trial lighting in Europe is in efficient, which results in the production of 29 million tonnes of CO2 every year. Using dimmable luminaires and intelligent lighting man-agement, this pollution can be cut by two thirds.

Zumtobel's new energy-saving initiative means that everyone is a win-ner: both the environment and the users. The new dim²save luminaires provide an affordable first step into the world of active lighting manage-ment. dim²save luminaires are easy to install and, thanks to standard momentary-action switches or a DIMLITE lighting management system, are real Scrooges when it comes to energy consumption. Luminaires fitted with dim²save components are only slightly more expensive than those with conventional electronic ballasts but have enormous energy saving potential because they are modular and can be enhanced by features such as presence detectors and daylight-based control.

dim²save – a win-win approach

The latest generation An affordable first step into the world of dimming.

Purchase price comparisonA luminaire with a dim²save ballast costs only a trifling amount more than a non-dimmable luminaire. The invest-ment pays off very quickly.

Energy efficiency comparisonIn terms of energy efficiency, dim²save solutions get very close to high-end DALI solutions. They are far better than conventional electronic ballasts.

The luminaires in this team office are divided up into four zones where daylight-based control and presence-based control ensure optimum energy efficiency. Various lighting scenes can be retrieved at the press of a button using the CIRCLE control point. There is an infrared remote control unit for even greater convenience.

The classroom is used intensively – 14 hours a day – because it is also used for evening classes. Daylight-based control and presence detectors make this two-zone lighting solution highly efficient. Lighting scenes can be adapted conveniently to suit particular tasks by using the CIRCLE control point.

CO2 consumption/saving using dim²save 29 g CO2 per day

This is the amount of CO2 that a tree absorbs on average. Using dimmable luminaires with intelligent lighting management in the underground car park shown above, for example, would make it possible to save 84.7 tonnes of CO2 every year. This is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 8,066 fully grown trees over the same time period.

High energy efficiency in these capacious manufacturing bays is based on two strategies. Most of the lighting relies on daylight-based control to make sure that luminaires are not left switched on 100% all day. Luminaires in areas that are not in use are operated at low dimming levels.

The installed load in the underground car park is high and the luminaires are in use 24 hours a day. Presence detectors dim all luminaires in areas that are not in use down to 10% in order to minimise energy consumption.
