Restaurants now offer a better quality of house and import-ed wines.

The way we eat is directly influenced by ourlifestyle, and as we have changed, so have ourrestaurants. Menus offer a previously unimaginedrange of options. Vegetarian menus, a variety of finedining options, house wine or bottled wine, an arrayof specialties, buffet service or a la carte, there’s anoption for every taste, every style and every budget.Established restaurants are offering ever-expandingmenus, and new restaurants are popping up everyday.Fast-food restaurants are by far the most success-

ful, with ethnic restaurants faring almost as well. Thanks to the latter, eating out has become a greatway to have an adventure. Not only do ethnic restau-rants allow us to experience new flavors and aromas, but the décor and the music create a seductivelynovel environment. It’s always pleasant when visiting a new city to

seek out a restaurant that serves local cuisine. As weseek to expand our horizons, restaurants are there tooffer us a pleasant window into new worlds.

The changing faceof restaurant dining

Breakfast at a restaurant,a great way to start the dayWhat better way to start the day than with a nice

breakfast at a pleasant restaurant? This inexpensivemeal is the most important of the day, providing us withthe energy for the tasks that await us. Whether it’s aquick bite on a weekday morning or a leisurely Sundaybrunch, breakfast at a restaurant can be a precious oppor-tunity to relax. The gentle aroma of coffee is a pleasant introduction to

your dining experience.Whether you prefer a mild varietyor a stronger brew, a good cup of coffee never fails to liftthe spirits. Eggs are the core of most breakfast menus.Whether you prefer yours Benedictine-style, over easy, boiled, poached, sunny side up or in an omelette, whetheraccompanied by an English muffin, a bagel, a croissant, ortoast, eggs can provide a satisfying breakfast. For thosewith a ready stomach and a big appetite, there are alwaysthe classics: eggs, bacon, sausages, ham, hash browns, beans and toast. Both healthy and sweet breakfasts arealso offered in most restaurants. There’s fruit in abun-dance, many cereals, pancakes, waffles, chocolate, and soforth.Whatever your mood, you’ll find something that sat-isfies.A restaurant breakfast is particularly appealing

because we know that numerous tasks await us duringthe day. We’ve got enough to do, why not take advantageof the chance to have a pleasant meal before we start?

Certain places attracthappiness. Restaurantsare places that make ussmile, whether it is at theend of a full day, at thestart of the new day, orsimply a break in the dayto enjoy a good meal withfriends. In fact, it is quitepleasant to eat at a restau-rant where the atmos-phere is cordial and sereneand where you can forgeteveryday problems. Youare treated like royaltyand there is nothing foryou to clean up… what atreat!Briefly, restaurants add

a bit of spice to everydaylife and are still the perfectplace to enjoy those specialevenings. Choose a restau-rant with a romanticatmosphere to celebrate afirst anniversary, or choose

one that offers exotic dish-es for friends with morerefined tastes to celebrate

someone’s return. As well, restaurants are particular-ly attentive when celebrat-

ing any other specialevents such as Mother’sDay, Valentine’s Day,anniversaries, and othercelebrations (cakes, birth-day songs, etc.).Restaurant outings are

easy to plan and are idealfor good conversation andconnecting with friends. The pleasure of sharing ameal at a restaurant isaccessible to everyone andto all budgets. In addition, many establishments nowoffer the option of reserv-ing private rooms for busi-ness meetings or socialgatherings. You can enjoyall the privacy you wantwithout sacrificing theexcellent service we associ-ate with a restaurantmeal. What could be bet-ter?

For breakfast or any other time of day, eatingat a restaurant can add spice to your life.

Restaurants make us happy!

Japanese? Vietnamese?Korean?

I’m losing my Chinese!!!Let’s not forget Szechwan, Cantonese, and Thai cuisine,

which are fairly popular. If you look a little further into exot-ic cuisine, you will find meals such as nems, dim sums, andnoodles and sushi, which are a little more popular. In Japanese restaurants, meals are often prepared in

front of the customers. All of the meals are nicely presentedon a large platter. Some meals are kept warm thanks to chaf-ing dishes, such as sake, a rice wine that is served very hot insmall porcelain cups with no handles, and tea that is servedat the end of the meal. Japanese meals are all about finesse.Spices are barely used to mildly boost the natural flavors.Pure unadulterated flavor!Thai cuisine, which is quite popular, has gone from the

tables of the kings and emperors of Siam to restaurantsaround the world. Contrary to Japanese cuisine, Thai cuisinehas a strong taste and curry is very popular. A true feast! To experience the essence of Chinese cuisine, you must

taste a shiou mai (or siu mai). This small steamed ravioli, wrapped in won ton pastry and shaped to suit the whims ofthe chef, can be made with shrimp, pork, vegetables, etc. Oncestuffed, shiou mai is steam-cooked. A divine pleasure!Less known, but gaining in popularity, Korean cuisine is

based on the same culinary roots as the other Asian cuisines.Rice, soya sauce, soy pasta, and fish, flavored with red pep-per, ginger, and sesame. Korea’s unique touch is found in itspleasant mixtures of sweet, acidic, spicy, salty, and sour. Asublime culinary discovery

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

The pleasure of dining outFor many of us, meal-

times are the high pointof the day. Perhapsthat’s because eatingcan be both comforting

and pleasant. And if wehave the opportunity toeat at a restaurant, thepleasure can be evengreater. Whether going

out for lunchwith a col-league to getaway fromwork, stop-ping for a

treatw i t h

the family to avoidannoying chores, meet-ing over a business din-ner or having a roman-tic evening out in a newenvironment, it’s alwaysa pleasure to eat out. What better way to gettogether with someonethan over a meal in arestaurant? It’s oftenover a meal that welaugh with friends, express out deepest feel-ings or celebrate theimportant milestones inour lives. In short, arestaurant can be theperfect place to social-ize.Some people pass

on the pleasure of

eating out, claimingthat they need to eatwell to remain healthy. But wanting to eat ahealthy diet doesn’tmean you can never setfoot in a restaurant.Going out to eat fromtime to time is verypleasant and highly rec-ommended for a changeof pace. Anyway, there’salways a way to avoidexcessive salt or grease,as most restaurateurstoday know that peopleare concerned with eat-ing well. Don’t be shy toask for exactly what youwant so your night outis a pleasant one.

A perfectplace-setting

for a romanticdinner!

A family meal at therestaurant without beingstingy or breaking yourbudget… it’s possible!Large family, small budget? By carefully choosing your

restaurant, you can enjoy a pleasant family outing withoutdigging a hole in your wallet. Many restaurants offer rebateson kid’s meals, in different ways. Some offer children’s mealsat half price one night a week. Others offer reduced prices foreach child accompanied by an adult, anytime. Still others pushthe offer a bit further by offering a free meal from the chil-dren’s menu with every full-priced adult meal. Most restaurants offer economical meals on their weekday

lunch menus. While such offers are primarily intended forworkers, why not take advantage of it as a family? As well, most restaurants charge different prices for their noon andtheir evening meals during weekends. Prices vary significant-ly, for adults as well as for children, in buffet-style restaurants. For teenagers whose appetites are bottomless, as well asadults with hearty appetites, buffets are an excellent choice. You can also select the daily special, which is more economical.Whether your budget is more or less tight, breakfast still

offers the best quality-to-price ratio for a restaurant meal. While it doesn’t necessarily reserve any great culinary sur-prises, eating breakfast at the restaurant is a pleasant way tostart the day. Hearty and delicious, including free coffee refills, breakfast can cost as little as $5.00 and can satisfy you untillate afternoon, especially if you eat at brunch time.

The last several yearshave seen a great increasein the popularity of restau-rants serving ethnic cui-sine. As a result, eatingout can now be an exoticexperience. Excellent foodfrom the world over is nowreadily available in mosttowns and cities.Every restaurant has

its nationality, and everynationality its culinaryspecialty. For example,Asian cuisine has scored asmashing success in thelast decade. For instance, there’s Thai cuisine; itsappeal comes from an

abundant use of differentspices, some acidic, somebitter and some sharp. Most Thai food is flavoredwith lemon grass, the fireof hot peppers and thefresh taste of coriander. The Vietnamese, on theother hand, cook noodlesand rice seasoned with theheady aroma of basil, gin-ger, lime, mint and so on,all of which are equallydelicious with pork, chick-en, beef or seafood. And, of course, Mexican

and Lebanese cuisine arealso popular. Mexicancooking seduces our taste

buds with classics liketacos, enchiladas, que-sadillas and fajitas, whichwe just can’t turn down.Lebanon beckons us withunexpected pleasures likehummus, a puree of chick-peas and sesame oil, some-times served with friedvegetables and meat, orbaba ghanouj, an eggplantpuree. And, of course, there’s

always Greek, Italian,French and Chinese cui-sine, as well as many oth-ers. Not only do these dif-ferent culinary experi-ences present us with newtastes and aromas, but thedécor and the music alsodraws us in, offering us apleasant sense of theadventure.

To whom belongs the roux? What is one element found in

both Cajun and Creole cuisine? It is the roux. This fabuloussauce is made with a mixture offat and browned flour and is thebase for many Creole and Cajundishes. Both cuisines have a sim-ilar multiracial heritage: eventhough both terms are not inter-changeable as they represent adistinct and separate culinaryculture, they both mix and meetto give us the savory cuisinefound in Southern Louisiana.Cajun cuisine stems from

New Orleans at the start of theXVIII century. At the end of thatcentury, thousands of Frenchcolonists left Haiti to escape theslave rebellion and broughtwith them

a

variety of Caribbean spices. Ataround the same time, manyAcadians from Nova Scotiaarrived in Southern Louisiana. All in all, New Orleans becamethe cradle for a new exciting cui-sine more than 300 years ago!Today, you will find the influ-

ence of the Bayous in mostCreole restaurants. Corn, rice, chicken and pork all competewith dishes full of crayfish, andouille, black pudding and avariety of sausages. For thosewith strong taste buds, they canchoose to add peppers, onionsand tomatoes, all spiced up inexquisite dishes. If you preferrabbit, fish, seafood, duck orgoose, you will be more than

satisfied with theCreole and Cajuncuisine: you willbe delightedand fulfilled!

Among the different types of family outings, eat-ing out at a restaurant is often the most popular withthe children. Stories and jokes can be exchanged overa good meal, parents can take a break and it’s a realtreat for the children.Family-type restaurants allow families to have a

nice outing without spending a fortune. Many placeshave a playroom available for the little ones andsometimes clowns and make-up artists are there toamuse the children. So a meal at a restaurantbecomes real entertainment, offering something foreveryone at lunchtime or suppertime.Other, more gastronomic options are available to

families. How about opening your family’s eyes to theworld and trying an Indian meal or some Ethiopiancooking sitting on the floor. The children will probablylove the experience; a total change of scenery and lotsof stories to tell friends on Monday morning. There isalso the possibility of going to a top-rate restauranton Sundays as families are often welcome on this dayof the week. Special children’s menus are available aswell as quality menus for adults.Another option to consider for an economical meal

out is to have breakfast at a restaurant. For a fractionof the price, the whole family can take advantage of agood meal in the comfort of unpretentious surround-ings. Buffet-style restaurants should also be consid-ered as the children’s menu is often half price. Andfinally, don’t forget that celebrating a birthday at arestaurant can turn out to be a gift in itself.

Beers andwines...à la carte!

Give yourself a special winetasting treat —

wine by the glass!

Rain or shine, Canadians loveeating out at a restaurant. Itcould be for a nutritious energy-packed continental breakfastbefore heading out to work, alunch between colleagues or anintimate dinner. Everyone of ushas a favourite spot, a restau-rant whose fares are hard toresist!Although we certainly have a

favourite wine or beer, lunch ordinner at a restaurant is theideal place to try out a vastarray of drinks. If the cost of abottle of wine will make a dentin your budget, why not buy it bythe glass? One or two glasses ofwine, a little exercise in winetasting, could prove more afford-able and will certainly curtaildrinking, as the legal limit canbe fast approaching.Beer is also very popular as

the drink of choice in restau-rants. Some restaurants special-ize in offering a wide selection ofbeers from the four corners ofthe world. Microbreweries arealso gaining in popularity andsome even had the brilliant ideato build restaurants on the sitesof their microbreweries. Tradingacross the globe has also openedthe door to new and excitingbeers from around the world.Wehave always known Belgian,French and English beers. Nowrestaurants are also able to offerbeers from places like Mexico,Hungary, Poland and Japan. Trythem out, drink moderately andenjoy fully this little time out atyour local restaurant!

Know where to finda good meal

We all appreciate a good meal. We take great delight insharing a good meal with friends and family and we look forthe best quality products available. When it comes to a mealthat will seduce us with its appearance, its aroma, and its fla-vor, we do not fret over the cost. After all, even if the dishtastes divine, a poorly presented meal is never very appetiz-ing.For this reason, it is important to know where to find such

culinary delights. Of course, there is always word of mouth. After the weather, our second choice of conversation isrestaurant outings, which are an integral part of our cultur-al activities. There is a vast choice in types of restaurants, theselection of products is infinite, and the prices vary depend-ing on the refinement of the products and the ambiance ofthe restaurant. The range of cuisine is particularly broad in large urban

areas. Nevertheless, surrounding regions have many pleas-ant surprises and happy discoveries in store for us. Bistro-bars, inns, country lodges… With just a few clicks, manyInternet sites let you explore different regions to help youdiscover the perfect little restaurant for tonight’s outing. Youwill find information on gastronomic tours, themed restau-rants, wine circuits, and many other very inviting diningexperiences. If you really want to be assured of a great meal, search for

the restaurants in your region that were awarded regional orprovincial prizes. Generally, it is a good indication of provensatisfaction.

Country diningat its best

An urge for a holidayoften grabs us by the tastebuds. So, why not let our-selves be tempted? A mealin the country can be theoccasion for a truly gas-tronomic jaunt throughthe enchanting country-side and incomparablesettings.Country-style dining is

part of what is now knownas Agro-tourism. This isan original way of savor-ing authentic farm prod-ucts and visiting themany regional producers.Farms offer menus com-posed mainly of their ownproducts, according toregional culinary speciali-ties. Reservations arerequired. This is a unique

occasion to get back tonature and to discoverregional dishes, with quali-ty taking precedence.Tourists can taste the fla-vors of a small corner of theworld without it costingthem a fortune and theadded bonus of a tour of thefarm.Several other types of

country-style dining areavailable offering beautifulviews and delicious meals.Every place is unique in itsown way, according to theregion and the type of farm.In their own way, theseplaces concoct their disheswith down-to-earth good-ness that’s hard to beat, giv-ing the countryside aplethora of culinary treats.

Over the years the mealshave become more refined, uniting an older, peasantstyle of cooking with a morecontemporary style ofinventiveness. Most of these farms offer

a “bring your own bottle”

formula. Some people evenchoose to get married atthese establishments. Theyare in fact, beautiful placesfor intimate, country-styleweddings, baptisms or fami-ly celebrations.

Hurray, we’re going to a restaurant!“For Mother’s Day, we

went to the same neighbor-hood restaurant where wehave been going since I was alittle girl, whenever wewanted to properly celebratean event. This is where wecelebrated many anniver-saries, and it is where myaunt once announced thatshe was expecting twin girls.Basically, this is the restau-rant we love to go to. Why dowe love this restaurant?Because the service is excel-lent and the food is delicious, creative, refined, and worthyof a star, but the prices arequite ordinary.” We have allheard similar storiesbecause restaurants are apart of our lives from ouryoungest age. Restaurantsare the place where welaughed, we cried, we sang,we celebrated…We all have our favourite

places, our favourite dishes,

and our favouritecooking styles. At dif-ferent times in ourlives, we can prefer asmall bistro, a snackbar, a sports lounge, arefined or an exoticrestaurant. We alsohave preferencesdepending on thepeople with whom weare going or the eventwe are celebrating. For larger groups, wetend to choose arestaurant that issure to please most ofthe participants.Briefly, there aremany choices, andmany occasions aswell, to break ourdaily routine and tocelebrate small or bigevents. You want to taste the

exotic flavors of anothercountry, you feel like a good

old steak dinner, or are youin the mood for a five-coursemeal? There is surely a tablewaiting for you at a restau-

rant in your city. Why nottreat yourself and your tastebuds to a multitude of sensa-tions?

There is surely a table waiting for you at a restaurant in your city.

How to choose a restaurantthat is right for you

Have you ever left arestaurant feeling quite sat-isfied with the meal but verydisappointed with the recep-tion and the service youreceived? Have you ever tol-erated loud disturbing sur-roundings just so you couldenjoy a meal away fromhome? To fully enjoy arestaurant meal, the menu isalways important, but so isthe atmosphere, which is oneof the keys to a successfulouting. Some establishments are

known for the quality oftheir dishes but not so muchfor the appeal of their diningroom. In fact, busy and noisyplaces are never a goodchoice for a successful outingwith friends, especially if youcannot hear each other. Ifyou cannot stand noise, avoid places where the musicis too loud, and do not choosea table that is placed tooclose to the kitchen. The

sounds of pots and pans willirritate you.Opting for a round table

is more conducive to goodconversation. It is alwaysdisappointing when you can-not converse with the guestswho are seated at the end ofa long rectangular table. Aswell, in order to reduce sur-rounding noises, choose arestaurant where the floor iscarpeted and the tables arespaced apart. It will reducethe comings and goingsaround you, and the atmos-phere will be much morerelaxing. It is best to know the

restaurant where you plan togo, either by having a lookbefore you enter or by askingpeople who have eaten there.Always reserve in advance toavoid disappointment. Youwill then be assured of apleasant experience and adelicious flavorful meal.

It is easy to eat a balanced and nutritious meal at yourfavourite restaurant, at your nearest fast food counter orother favourite spots as long as you pay particular atten-tion to your nutritional needs.

Dieticians have been telling us over and over: fastfood and overeating cause obesity and ensuinghealth problems. Often, because we lack the time, weforego nutritious meals and opt for the nearest fastfood counter or restaurant for our lunch. At night, after a hard long day, we jump in the car and driveto our favourite restaurant. But, take heart, it is nowpossible to eat out and eat nutritious meals. Evenfast food chains now offer nutritious choices if youtake into account your nutritional needs.

Start your meal with a large glass of water.Satisfied for a short while, your stomach will be lessinclined to want everything on the menu and youwill be better able to resist pigging out! The waiterbrings you freshly baked bread? Go ahead, eat slow-ly and enjoy at least 50 gr. After 25 gr. the satietycenter in your brain feels replete and you will eatless during your meal. Just avoid adding butter ormargarine.

As an aperitif, tomato juice is an excellent choice.Alcohol and sweet drinks will stimulate yourappetite. If you choose an entrée, do not orderdessert. If it is for lunch, you can always enjoy a fewcookies during your mid-afternoon coffee break!Tables d’hôte are very popular and somewhat cheap-er than meals à la carte but they often will fill youup. If the only option offered is the table d’hôte,remember that you do not have to eat the wholething!

Healthyeating out!

To your car, gasoline isenergy. Put it in, the car goes.Say you came in for a fill-up of20 gallons. But you only go 10miles and you come back foranother 20 gallons. Prettysoon you're going to have tofind a place to store all thatexcess energy.

The same is true of yourbody. Energy-dense foods likeprocessed starches anddesserts, most baked goods, candy, alcohol and the like, provide a lot of energy, and

unless you use it, you're goingto have to find a place to putwhat you don't use -- such aships and tummy.

An orange contains aboutthe same amount of potentialenergy, which we call calories,as a doughnut. The orangealso contains water, fiber, com-plex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, phyto chemicals andantioxidant nutrients, all ofwhich just so happen to begood for you. The orange isnutrient-dense while the

doughnut is just energy-dense.

To increase your nutrition-to-energy ratio, try the plan offour lists: It's all about settingpriorities:

1. Foods to eat daily:Fruits, whole grains, nuts, car-rots, leafy greens and greentea.

2. Food to eat three times aweek: Broccoli, avocado, sweetpotatoes, oily fish, yogurt.

3. Foods to eat just once aweek. Red meat, pasta, alldesserts and alcohol.Unfortunately, alcohol is

about as energy-dense andnutrient-light as you can get.

4. Do not eat: Fast food, soda pop with the exception ofclub soda, processed meals, canned soups and anythingwith the word "diet" in it.

One more rule: Breakfast, each and every day, no excep-tions. Several studies havefound that people who main-tain significant amounts ofweight loss routinely eatbreakfast.
