MAROON BELLS AND LAKE In Colorado, 52 peaks tower 14,000 feet or more above the sea. Two of this select group - Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak - stand side-by-side in the rugged Aspen region, and together are known more fcnniliarly as the Maroon Bells . . . the name suggested by their shape and coloring. As seen in the cover photo, across the sparlcling ice-<:old snow-waters of Maroon Lake, the North peak - nearer the ccnnera - appears the taller. Actually, it is an even 14,000 feet in elevation, its companion 126 feet higher. The Maroon Bells are outstanding topographic features of a spectacular scenic region noted as a year-'round vacation land. Though beautiful in any season, the riotous colors of frost-turned Aspen leaves add splashes of brilliance among the deep tones of evergreens in the Indian Summer of early Autumn. The region is particularly popular during the colorful season with big-gcnne hunters in search of the deer and elk which thickly populate the forested high-altitude hillsides. The w= sunny days and frosty nights of Indian Summer provide ideal hunting conditions for the nimrods who purchase more than 100,000 big gcme licenses annually. Colorado's scientific gcnne conser- vation progrcnn permits an annual ldll well in excess of 50,000 head of deer and elk each year to reduce the herds to the size which can find adequate forage durinq the Rocky Mountain winter. MAROON BELLS AND LAKE

In Colorado, 52 peaks tower 14,000 feet or more above the sea. Two of

this select group - Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak - stand side-by-side

in the rugged Aspen region, and together are known more fcnniliarly as the

Maroon Bells . . . the name suggested by their shape and coloring. As seen

in the cover photo, across the sparlcling ice-<:old snow-waters of Maroon Lake,

the North peak - nearer the ccnnera - appears the taller. Actually, it is an

even 14,000 feet in elevation, its companion 126 feet higher.

The Maroon Bells are outstanding topographic features of a spectacular

scenic region noted as a year-'round vacation land. Though beautiful in any

season, the riotous colors of frost-turned Aspen leaves add splashes of brilliance

among the deep tones of evergreens in the Indian Summer of early Autumn.

The region is particularly popular during the colorful season with big-gcnne

hunters in search of the deer and elk which thickly populate the forested

high-altitude hillsides. The w= sunny days and frosty nights of Indian

Summer provide ideal hunting conditions for the nimrods who purchase more

than 100,000 big gcme licenses annually. Colorado's scientific gcnne conser

vation progrcnn permits an annual ldll well in excess of 50,000 head of deer

and elk each year to reduce the herds to the size which can find adequate

forage durinq the Rocky Mountain winter.
