250th Anniversary of the Founding of Mission San Diego de Alcalá
San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the twenty-one great California Missions, marks the birthplace of Christianity on the West coast of the United States. It is California's first Mission Church. This remarkable and significant historical shrine provides an understanding and appreciation of the
beginning of Catholicism in this corner of the world, so remote from the Mother Country of Spain and yet so similar.
Today the Mission, which was founded in 1769, serves as an active parish church and cultural center for people of all faiths who are welcome to visit and relive the grandeur and excitement of more than two centuries of California history and tradition.
For thousands of years, the American Indians lived in this area that we now know as the great state of California. Most of the maps before the 18th century depicted California as an island. In 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, an explorer commissioned by the monarch of Spain, arrived in San Diego Bay, and according to the Spanish tradition named it San Miguel, after the saint whose feast day was closest to the landing. In 1602 Sebastian Viscaino, leading another Spanish expedition, entered the harbor and renamed it San Diego after Saint Didacus of Alcalá, who died in Alcalá de Henares, Spain, on November 12, 1463, and whose feast day was closest to the landing. In Spanish architecture, a bell wall is referred to as a campanario. It is a wall adjoining the church with niches for holding bells. All five bells are only rung in unison once a year and that occurs on the celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the mission in July.

San Diego de Alcalá, es la primera misión de las veintiuna grandes misiones de California, esta marca el lugar de nacimiento del Cristianismo en la costa Oeste de los Estados Unidos. Es la primera iglesia misionera de California. Este notable y significativo santuario histórico proporciona un entendimiento y apreciación del inicio del Catolicismo en este rincón
del mundo, tán alejado de la Madre Patria de España y, sin embargo, tán similar. Hoy la Misión, que fue fundada en 1769, sirve como centro cultural y parroquial para personas de todas las religiones que la visitan y reviven la grandeza y la emoción de más de dos siglos de historia y tradición de California. En la arquitectura Española, se usa un muro con campanas que le dan el nombre de campanario. Este campanario tiene nichos para campanas. Las cinco campanas suenan en unisón una vez al año, en el aniversario de la fundación de la Misión.

Catechists are urged to complete the renewal requirements before your certification expires. You may NOT retake the Basic Catechetical Certification Course to count for renewal hours. The options for renewing your catechetical certification consists in taking: 1. 30 hours in diocesan sponsored or approved conferences, workshops, and congresses that are designed for renewal credit. The areas of these programs will be Scripture, Doctrine, Morality, Sacraments, Liturgy, Psychological Development, Church History, Catechetics or Administration Skills. A combined total of 5 hours (in the three year period) will be granted for spiritual renewal experiences such as Cursillo, Life in the Spirit seminars, Marriage Encounter, Catholic bible study groups, etc. 2. Completing (1) approved 30 hour course or (2) 15-hour courses in Religious Studies or Religious Education at a Catholic college or University, or through the San Diego Diocesan Institute. If you are interested in receiving information about the Institute courses, please call 858-490-8212 or visit: Diocesan Institute 3. Completing a specialization course in a given area such as Preschool, Methods for Elementary Grade Catechesis, Special Religious Education, Youth Ministry, Evangelization, Adult Faith Formation, RCIA, etc. It is the responsibility of the catechist to advise the Parish DCM or Coordinator of all the completed renewal work. The DCM or Coordinator will notify the Office for Evangelization and Catechetical Ministry in June of each year of all the catechists whose certification should be renewed. Catechists who are not currently teaching, but wish to maintain their certification, should forward all documentation of completed coursework for renewal to the Office for Evangelization and Catechetical Ministry by May 1st of each year.

No se permite retomar el Curso Básico de Formación para satisfacer las horas de renovación. La certificación se puede renovar de las siguientes maneras: 1. Completando 30 horas de conferencias aprobadas o patrocinadas por la diócesis, talleres, conferencias y congresos que estén designados para la renovación de créditos. Un total de 5 horas combinadas (en un periodo de tres años) se otorgan por experiencias de renovación espiritual, tales como Cursillos, Retiros, Seminarios de Vida en el Espíritu, Encuentros Matrimoniales, grupos de estudio de Biblia Católicos etc. 2. Completando (1) curso de 30 horas o (2) cursos de 15 horas en Estudios Religiosos o Educación Religiosa en un colegio o Universidad Católica, o a través del Instituto Diocesano. Completando un curso de especialización en alguna área como Pre-escolar, Métodos de Catequesis para Grados Elementales, Educación Religiosa Especial, Pastoral Juvenil, Evangelización, Formación en la Fe para Adultos, RICA, etc. Es la responsabilidad del catequista avisar al Director de Ministerio Catequético (DMC) o Coordinador sobre el trabajo de renovación adquirido. El DMC/Coordinador notificará a la Oficina para el Ministerio de Evangelización y Catequesis en junio de cada año sobre los catequistas quienes serán renovados. Los catequistas que no estén impartiendo clases actualmente, pero desean mantener su certificación vigente, deben enviar su documentación de créditos adquiridos a la Oficina para el Ministerio de Evangelización y Catequesis para el 1ro de mayo de cada año para que se les renueve su certificación.

The National Conference For Catechetical Leadership is the only independent national organization exclusively dedicated to serving the church’s catechetical mission in the United States. More than 90% of all dioceses/eparchies are members of NCCL, along with nine diocesan/provincial associations of parish catechetical leaders and Catholic publishing houses.
What is it?
Members of NCCL are leaders who want the latest information, developments, and resources for enhancing their catechetical leadership. They are networked and
connected, motivated lifelong learners, and committed to faith formation for all ages.
We encourage Priests, Deacons, Catholic School Principals, DCM’s, Coordinators
for RCIA, Adult Faith Formation, Evangelization, Hispanic Ministry and all Parish Catechetical Leadership to take this opportunity and join NCCL. We are offering a one-year subscription through our Diocese.
