WHY

Christians have long understood the power of common forms of identification, and the joy of recognising one another as members of a distinctive faith family.

Recognition brings us together. And closer to God.

3

In normal text, the Diocese should be referred to as “The Diocese of Winchester”, rather than Winchester Diocese: eg, ‘There are 390 churches in the Diocese of Winchester.’

The Diocese of Winchester’s communication typeface is Calibri 12 point. This is the font to be used for emails, letters, longer documents and any screen presentation. > See ‘typeface’ pages

The Communications Team will offer ongoing support for departments in meeting any design and document production needs, and adapting to standard styles.

When the design of publications or non-standard publicity materials, or high spec. work is being considered, please consult the Communications Team on design and use of the Diocesan Logo.

ARMS

DIOCESE of

WINCHESTER

Ecclesiastical heraldry is the tradition of heraldry developed by Christian clergy.

Initially used to mark documents, ecclesiastical heraldry evolved as a system for identifying people and dioceses.

The central shield of the Ancient coat of Arms of the Bishopric of Winchester is common to the Bishop and to the Cathedral. Many versions exist, but certain elements are mandatory, by order of the College of Arms. The heraldic description is:

“Gules two Keys endorsed and conjoined at the bows in bend wards in chief the uppermost Or the lower Argent a Sword the point in chief interposed between them in bend sinister of the third pomel and hilt Gold.”

LOGOTYPE

DIOCESE of

WINCHESTER

This version of The Arms, together with the words ‘Diocese of Winchester’ constitue the diocesan logotype.

The logotype is a common visual identification for every element of the Mission and Ministry of the Diocese of Winchester.

For pages and documents, they should be used on the extreme left hand side.

SAFE AREA

A ‘safe area’ should be left around the logotype equivalent to the height of the ‘W’ in Winchester.

The Communications team can supply JPEG versions of the logotype with this safe area built in.

COLOURS

It is important to use the correct colours, and only these.

Microsoft applications allow you to enter RGB colours by selecting ‘More Colours’ followed by the ‘Custom’ tab.

You can then enter the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) values which will give you the correct shades.

ACCESS

The Diocese of Winchester is committed to making printed and visual materials available to all

The accessibility requirements needed for legible print often differ from person to person.

Provision should be made to meet the specific accessibility requests of everyone at the Diocese of Winchester. Some may require printed material to be produced in large print (Calibri 16 point and above) or on a specific colour of paper.

The Diocese of Winchester should make all text available electronically, so that reading software can be used to transcribe information.

The availability of information in electronic form should be clearly marked on documents using Calibri.

If you have any queries, contact the communications office.
