2 Stroke Direct Injection – Oil separates and lubricates lower part of Cylinders with less being burnt Temperatures are different and therefore the types of oil that are specified MUST be used otherwise inadequate lubrication can occur Synthetic or semi-synthetic oils are common with DFI or EFI engines

ECU are sensitive items and usually remain ‘live’ at all times. Beware of battery drain if left for long periods Avoid ‘jump starting’ as voltages can damage the circuit boards Avoid ‘fast charging’ systems that can also damage the ECU Avoid high pressure hosing on these types of engines as water ingress will cause damage

An oil that is suitable for carbureted 2-stroke will in most cases not be suitable or recommended for use in DFI 2-stroke Mixing different oils together: Gelling of the oil can occur, blocking oil supply hoses and oil pumps - engine failure will result Correct oil selection for 4-stroke outboards is based on atmospheric temperature. E.g. TOHATSU recommend the use of 10W-30 for all temperatures.

All reputable authorities agree, that running on Ethanol above 10% will cause motor damage and / or performance issues with petrol-powered engines, and it is always unsafe to run on contaminated fuel. Ethanol is hygroscopic – meaning it will attract and absorb large amounts of moisture / water / condensation from the air, giving an increased risk of fuel water contamination. Ethanol is very prone to dangerous phase separation – a water/ethanol mixture, being heavier than petrol, will sink to the bottom of the fuel tank, leaving a lower octane petrol on top. This low octane petrol (lean fuel) can cause performance issues with 4-Stroke engines, and cause damage to 2-Stroke engines. For Australia, TOHATSU now recommend the use of fresh Premium Grade 95 Octane (non – Ethanol E10) unleaded fuel for all outboard models. Always use fresh, high quality fuel and replace it every 2-4 weeks. We also highly recommend the use of a Premium Grade TCW-3 2-stroke engine oil when using 95 Octane for 2-Stroke engines. The use of any fuel containing Methanol, Ethanol (E10), Acetone, or Benzene is not recommended. Ethanol is an amazing solvent and cleansing agent – Ethanol can dissolve, deteriorate and breakdown solid material, including rubber, plastic, fiberglass and even aluminium and steel.

Rubber seals and plastic material used in older boats are often not compatible with Ethanol and parts will become dry and brittle. Since Ethanol is a cleansing and drying solution , it will clean the oil right off the internal components of a 2-stroke. If possible, try to avoid using Ethanol E10 fuel in your outboard and marine engines. – If you are unable to obtain Ethanol free fuel, you SHOULD TEST THE FUEL BEFORE YOU BUY, to assure Ethanol content is at or below 10%.
