Traditional fingerpostsDirectional signage ensures that leisure and tourist attractions,

buildings and important facilities in town and city centres, parks

and other leisure sites can be located easily, whilst also advertising

their presence and promoting their use. Furnitubes produces a

wide range of traditionally-styled fingerposts manufactured from

Components & assemblyFingerposts comprise the following components:

FINIAL

Cast aluminium finials are caps that fit over the top of the

column, preventing the arms from being lifted off and

providing a finishing touch to the assembly. 7 decorative finials

are offered as standard, with tablet versions allowing for site-

specific lettering and / or logos.

DIRECTIONAL ARM (FINGER)

Arms are cast in aluminium for good definition and strength.

They are available in heights to accommodate 1, 2 or 3 lines of

text. The I-shape section provides a strong profile and allows

the raised borders to be painted in a contrasting colour if

required. Lettering and graphic symbols are cast integral to

the arms, and raised above the level of the main body. Text

is offered in a number of fonts and sizes, many in upper and

lower case and a large range of standard symbols are also

available. Arms can be supplied with full or half height collars

and can be painted in any BS or RAL colour reference, with

letter faces highlighted by hand in a contrasting colour.

TELESCOPIC SPIGOT

Furnitubes’ unique telescopic spigot allows instant adjustment

of the spigot height during installation to suit the number of

arms required. This flexible system allows the addition and

removal of arms without the need for a new extension spigot

or cutting down of the exsiting spigot. At maximum extension

the spigot can accommodate collars and finials up to a total

height of 1500mm.

COLUMN

Fingerpost columns are constructed from a galvanised steel

section that runs the full height for optimum strength and

corrosion resistance. This is embellished with a choice of 5 cast

iron column base designs , from the low level Guildford to

the substantial Westminster design. The below ground root

section is 600mm deep as standard, providing a suitable

foundation for the column assembly.

Lettering, symbols & justificationIt is important to pedestrians that signage is legible, and consideration should be given to the font size and style relative to the viewing

distance, and also its colour contrast with the background colour of the arm. Lettering is therefore offered in a number of standard fonts

and sizes, and with the option of all upper or combined upper and lower cases on all styles. Helvetica Medium is the most popular choice

of sans-serif font, and Cloister Bold for more decorative requirements, with upper case only lettering being the most commonly used style.

Approximately 20 characters can be accommodated on a single line of most arms, and for situations when the destination name exceeds

the length of a single line, the wording can carry over onto the second / third lines of double / treble line arms. A wide variety of symbols are

available as standard, which can be highlighted in contrasting colours for ease of recognition.

As standard, lettering is justified left on both faces. Symbols assoc-

Full & half height collarsCollars that fit over the column spigot are traditionally the same height as the arm itself meaning that arms are simply stacked on top of each

other. When there are numerous arms on a single post this results in a very high assembly of arms and overall column. Furnitubes’ single,

double and treble line arms are offered with half height collars, enabling arms facing in different directions to be interlocked at the same

level, and in doing so significantly reduce the overall height of the arm assembly and column and makes for a neater visual solution, as shown

below. Half height collar arms are ideal when directions are opposite each other (when at a lesser angle one arm can partially obscure the

other from certain viewpoints). When making an enquiry and prior to placing an order with Furnitubes we will produce graphic representations

of the arm layouts for your approval prior to manufacture.

Any symbols for specific destinations, or as in the example of a

pointing finger shown here, that can be recreated in simple relief

form can be used on the patterns from which moulds are taken to

create the cast aluminium arms. On sight of the artwork we will

offer advice on the level of detail achievable.

Capital Ring multi-line split collar arms

The Capital Ring is an extensive network of 15 inter-linked routes

over 70 miles in total length. Multiple destinations and crossover

points on the routes demanded more information than would

normally be displayed on traditional fingerposts, and led to the

design of a series of purpose-made large scale interlocking arms.

Thames Path multi-line split collar arms

Thames Path is a National Trail footpath running for 180 miles

along the banks of the river Thames. As for the Capital Ring

project (above) large scale arms with interlocking collars were

National Cycle Route Signage

This site required directions to the local school and national

cycle network routes to be shown on the same post, but to be

distinguishably different in their appearance. The cycle signage was

designed to comply with national standards in layout and colour,

with the school sign in contrasting arm shape and colours.

Traditional village road signs

Locally distinctive white posts and sign arms were commonplace

in our villages many years ago, before the national standardisation

of road signage, and many such signs have been lost over recent

years as a result. At this village green site we designed replica arms

with an unusual pointer profile and a village crest finial.

The cast aluminium sign plates were suspended, and allowed

to swing, from a steel arm, which was fixed to the column via

Contemporary directional signageFurnitubes’ Zenith directional sign is a modern variation of a

traditional fingerpost, comprising a polished stainless steel column

and cast aluminium arms. Arms can be supplied with a square or

angle ended, with lettering in a number of standard font styles,

and with symbols and logos as required. The unique telescopic

spigot allows additional (or fewer) arms to be used in future

without the need for extending or cutting down the original

spigot. There are three standard complementary finial designs.

Display case for post & wall-mountingDisplay cases are an ideal way to present both permanent and

temporary printed material - including notices, signs and maps -

to provide residents, visitors and users of an area or facility with

up-to-date information on upcoming events. Robust and weather-

proof, all of our cases have lockable glazed doors that protect the

display material against ingress from dust and damp. We offer

3 different ranges of display cases - Traditional, Economy and

Themed - with the following features common across all ranges:

Traditional RangeThis range is primarily designed to be used in conjunction with our traditionally-styled

columns derived from our directional fingerpost range of products, although they can be

also be used for wall mounting. Cases are large format as generally required for municipal

areas and can be mounted between a choice of 5 standard column designs. There are

further options for decorative column finials and optional header boards.

Economy RangeThe Economy range offers 2 basic styles (squared and rounded corners) and nearly 20

standard size variations of wall and post-mounted display cases designed for ‘everyday’ sites

that require straightforward and visually plain products, without the types of adornments

offered in our traditional range. The range lends itself to multiple side-by-side units and

back-to-back assemblies when mounted between posts.

Themed RangeA new range comprising smaller format display cases mounted on backing plates profile cut

in the shape of distinctive silhouettes. There are 2 themes - Menu and Leisure / School - and

12 designs in all that make for eyecatching features of notice boards that might otherwise

go unnoticed. These cases are equally suited to interior and exterior applications.

Features & operationFurnitubes’ range of traditional display cases are manufactured in

a combination of custom-designed extruded aluminium sections

and an internal steel backing plate for display mounting and

strengthening purposes. Glazing is 4mm Polyflexx polycarbonate

as standard, with safety glass offered as an alternative for areas

that are considered less prone to vandalism. Cases can be either

wall-mounted or fitted to any of our 5 traditional coulmn designs,

with both installation types having the option of a cast aluminium

header board to include site-specific graphics. If using the case for

a single sheet display graphic, it is advisable to avoid placing critical

graphical information within a 5mm margin zone of the specified

visible area.

A comprehensive range of styles, sizes & installation optionsAs its name suggests, the Economy range of display cases offers straightforward functional products at competitive prices. There are two basic

styles of case (squared and rounded corners) and many standard size options, all of which can be wall or post-mounted. Cases and posts can

be supplied powder coated in any RAL reference colour or in a silver anodised finish.

Functional & fun display casesThis new range of display cases provide an eyecatching point of

display for public notices and come in 2 themed styles - Menu and

Leisure / School - each with a number of different size and design

options. The cases themselves are constructed from extruded

aluminium, are fully lockable and weather sealed, and suitable

therefore for both interior and external applications. The door

glazing is 4mm Polyflexx - a polycarbonate which offers excellent

UV resistance and is up to 30 times more shatter resistant than

glass. The internal display area is steel, to which notices can be

attached with magnetic pins. Cases are available in a range of

sizes and are mounted on a precision cut steel plate in a variety

of silhouette forms, all polyester powder coated in a choice of

standard colours. All cases are pre-drilled with 4 no. holes for

simple wall-mounting. Cases can also be supplied with a lighting

kit, which comprises two LED lighting strips to be placed at the top

and bottom of the display case with a transformer installed outside

the notice board.

PlaquesWelcome signs, area plans, interpretation signage and street name plates are all important components that contribute to the legibility of our

towns and cities and the visitor’s overall experience of any site. Good signage announces, informs and aids orientation. Furnitubes’ speciality

in this area is the custom design and supply of traditionally-styled signage boards manufactured in robust cast materials and generally finished

by hand by skilled craftsmen, as shown here in a selection of bespoke signage solutions. Our designers are able to assist with the selection

of appropriate product options and can also produce graphic layouts for you, advising along the way on suitable artwork sizes from both

visual clarity and manufacturing points of view. We offer two board sizes as standard, both with an in-built decorative header section to

accommodate the site or town name and / or the local authority crest, as shown here on the various London Borough of Enfield welcome

signs. Boards can be fitted to a wall, or mounted between post, either using our traditional fingerpost columns complete with decorative

finials or bespoke posts to suit your site. Other examples shown include custom-designed West Hill Subway and Roundwood Park location

plans, Greenwich Market stall key plan and the Glaisher Street street name plate.

Purpose-designed signage specific to your schemeIn many situations, a signage panel alone may not be visually prominent enough to attract attention, especially in busy urban areas. If the

signage is simply enlarged though to make is more visible, it may be disproportionate in scale in relation to its surroundings, and can even

become an eyesore. Many schemes benefit from a site-specific approach to signage, with purpose-designed signage solutions. Not being

mainstream signmakers, Furnitubes’ designers approach signage design in a different way - looking at the wider site and how the signage

will sit within its setting. We work across a multitude of materials and manufacturing techniques so will not be constrained in our outlook.

Shown here are examples of feature signage on which the supporting structures are as integral to the design as the signage lettering itself.

Both the Greenwich Park Cafe and West Hill Subway feature signs employ overhead steel arches that not only serve as a means of displaying

the lettering, but also become important structural and aesthetic features of the designs. Our designers relish the opportunity of developing

Case study: Colwyn BayThe Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project combines the renewal of coastal

defences with regeneration improvements, over a 2 mile length

of promenade in this popular seaside resort. The pedestrian route

from the town centre to the promenade passes via a short tunnel

beneath the busy A55 North Wales Expressway and the North

Wales Coast Railway, emerging opposite Victoria Pier, at which

point an attractive new signage feature has been installed. Using

standard concrete blocks from our Core Curved Seating Range,

Furnitubes developed the signs to incorporate a sandwich of 3

heavy duty steel plates, with the lettering as cut-outs in the grey-

coloured outer plates to reveal the blue of the central plate, and

with individual stainless steel letters invisibly fixed to the curved

concrete blocks. Two assemblies were supplied, each with location

and destination wording in both Welsh and English.

Shown here are some examples of the range of manufacturing methods that we can offer for the production of plaques and nameplates.

The suitability of each method depends largely on the level of detail and number of colours required, and on the overall size of the plaque;

we are happy to discuss the options with you on review of your artwork.

Cast aluminiumA positive-form pattern needs

to be created initially, usually

in timber, and machine or

hard carved to the level of

detail required. This allows

sculptural 3d forms to be

recreated. A negative-form

mould of the pattern is then

made in sand, into which

molten aluminium is cast. The

casting is then hand painted

in the required colours.

Cast bronzeThe pattern, mould and

casting processes are as for

cast aluminium. The main

difference here though is

that cast bronze plaque is not

painted. Instead, the raised

relief lettering and other

artwork features are polished

to contrast with the darker

background. Bronze plaques

will weather over time to a

attractive natural patina.

Engraved signageEngraving is a mechanical

process whereby flat sheet

metal - usually stainless steel

or bronze - is machined to

a shallow depth to follow

the form of the lettering or

graphic. To improve the visual

definition of the artwork the

engraved areas are infilled

with enamel paint. Engraved

signs are most often used for

memorial plates on seats.

Photo-etched zincWhere the artwork is extensive

and complex, photo-etching is

a good technique. Zinc sheet

is printed with a negative

resist of the artwork, and

an acid solution allowed to

etch away the exposed areas,

leaving the artwork raised and

giving the opposite effect of

an engraving. The top surface

can be simply linished and

lacquered or infill painted.
