The City of New Braunfels New Braunfels is a dynamic Texas community, home to approximately

66,000 residents. Strategically

located mid-way between the cities of Austin and San Antonio along the

I-35 corridor, New Braunfels is in one of the fastest growing and most

vibrant areas of the country. The

City provides the charm of a small, historic community and the

convenience of a large, ur-ban area. There are beauti-

ful rivers and parks, a vi-brant downtown, a growing

economy, great neighbor-

hoods and two highly re-garded school systems.

Tourism is an important component in New Braun-

fels’ economic life, with over two million annual visitors.

Other significant sectors of the economy include distri-

bution and light manufactur-

ing. This sector will con-tinue to grow as businesses

come to the area for its proximity to major cities, transportation and for

the quality of life available in the

community.

With a strong Hispanic and German heritage anchoring the past, the City

looks to the future with excitement

and anticipation as its diversity continues to grow.

The City of New Braunfels operates

under a Council-Manager form of

government. The City Council consists of seven elected officials -

a Mayor elected at-large and six council members elected from

individual districts.

New Braunfels is a full service

municipal organization employing approximately 570 city employees.

According to the U. S. Census, in 2014 New Braunfels was the 13th fastest growing city in the United States and the sixth fastest growing city in Texas.

Public Works Department

The City of New Braunfels Public Works Department staffs a total of 98 full time employees, manages an annual operating budget of approximately $13.5 million

and a very robust capital improvement program.

The Department maintains and enhances the physical environment and

infrastructure of the City of New Braunfels through the responsible management of the following functions: Engineering and Transportation, Streets and Drainage,

Watershed Management, Solid Waste and Recycling, CIP, Fleet Maintenance and Facilities Maintenance. The Public Works Director reports to the City Manager.

Current Projects and Challenges

Management of the City’s natural resources, the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers

and their watersheds. The rivers are integral to the City’s healthy tourism sector and prized natural environment.

Continuation of a street maintenance and rehabilitation program to improve

the quality of the City’s aged streets.

Finalization of a master plan to move the Solid Waste and Recycling Division

to a new building to be constructed in conjunction with a new Fire Training Facility on land owned by the City.

Development of a process to update the City’s Capital Improvement Plan.

Keep up with the tremendous growth of the City and its demands on the

department as a whole, but particularly transportation planning, engineering

reviews and inspections.

Compliance with federally mandated stormwater requirements and continued

efforts protecting our community from flooding through various flood control projects.

Continued compliance with the Edwards Aquifer Habitat Conservation Plan.

The Position

The City’s next Public Works Director will be a professional

who can thrive in a growing, dynamic community, and who is willing to accept the challenge of working in a

changing environment.

This outstanding individual must hold a high regard for public

service, community and quality. He/she must also possess superior decision making skills, be creative, resourceful,

pay attention to detail, and exhibit excellent communication skills.

Assignments are

broad in scope and

require the use of independent judg-

ment and initiative in resolving com-

plex administrative issues and in

making technical

decisions and policy recommendations.

The chosen candi-date will establish

objectives and performance measures that carry out the

vision and operational goals of the City.

This position requires outstanding leadership and communi-cation skills and must be able to successfully communicate

with a diversity of community groups, business organiza-

tions, and government agencies to ensure that programs are effectively accomplished.

Qualifications Our next Public Works Director will

ideally have a bachelors degree in engineering, public administration,

or a related field, and seven years’ experience in public works admini-

stration, construction management, project management, water

resource management or engineer-

ing (preferably in the public sector), including five years

supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of

education and experience.

He/She must also have extensive

administrative, budgeting, and capital project implementation

experiences with a city, county or

regional office or firm that does considerable work for local

government agencies.

A Master’s degree is preferable.
