It is expected that all of the duties and responsibilities of this position will be performed in a manner that reflects the values of Rex Healthcare, UNC REX Cancer Care, and the UNC Health System. The Director Radiation Oncology will reflect the vision, values, mission and operating principles of Rex Healthcare and UNC REX Cancer Care and ensure that they are consistently communicated and evident in the provision and delivery of the Department’s services. In addition, the Director will:

Lead by example ensuring the philosophy, mission, vision, quality principles and core values of Rex Healthcare and UNC REX Cancer Care are consistently presented to all customers, associates and the patient community.

Working in conjunction with the Executive Director, the UNC REX Radiation Oncology Physicians and Hospital leadership prepare and implement Department business plans to achieve the strategic, financial and operating targets of the Department and of UNC REX Cancer Care.

Identify and evaluate emerging opportunities and threats to Departmental growth and performance.

Represent the Department and UNC REX Cancer Care on Hospital and Health System committees and work teams as requested.

Function as an advocate for the Department for resource needs. Coordinate the delivery of radiation oncology services across all locations,

emphasizing the consistency of care standards and ensuring clinical and administrative “best practices” are communicated, shared and implemented.

Provide leadership and support in the development of operational practices and systems to improve clinical outcomes.

Monitor Department-specific technology advancements and develop feasibility plans for the acquisition of technology to differentiate UNC REX Cancer Care in the market

Maintain current knowledge of advancements and developments in cancer treatment.

Maintain and strengthen relationships with Department and Cancer Center physicians and jointly develop opportunities for service line growth in the greater Raleigh market.

Create a Departmental culture that focuses on customer service, coworker participation, collaboration, motivation and effective communication.

Ensure the Department meets performance metrics that reflect patient experience, customer service, quality, fiscal responsibility and overall performance.

Expectations for LeadershipThe Director Radiation Oncology will be expected to accomplish several key objectives within the first 12 to 18 months. The following goals represent some of the challenges to be addressed:

Develop personal and professional credibility within the Department, UNC REX Cancer Care, UNC Radiation Oncology and across the Hospital. Gain

respect and build trust with coworkers, physicians and key stakeholders, internally and externally.

Engage Department physicians to ensure a common focus on Departmental and UNC REX Cancer Care objectives to improve outcomes, grow volumes and provide consistent, high quality service to the communities served at each location.

Become a visible and invested member of the UNC REX Cancer Care administrative leadership team serving as an advocate for Radiation Oncology and UNC REX Cancer Care services.

Develop a high performing team. Evaluate existing Department talent and structure and identify and champion high potential members and make recommendations for an organization structure to achieve those goals. Develop others through coaching, mentoring, on-the-job training and use of development programs. Utilize effective communications, recognition and delegation to create conditions where coworkers are highly motivated and committed to accomplishing Department goals. Handle performance issues with respect for others, but take appropriate and timely corrective action when needed.

Serve as a role model for and champion of service excellence. Lead innovation and change: Create an environment where others feel free

to initiate change and take calculated risks. Proactively act to reduce resistance to change. Lead by setting a personal example of excellence.

Essential Skills / AttributesThe ideal candidate for the Director Radiation Oncology position will possess significant experience leading radiation oncology services in a large, preferably multi-site, environment.

The Director will possess: Proven track record and experience leading large, clinical and administrative

workforces Excellent physician relations skills and previous experience in similar

departmental leadership role Skills in the complete range of strategic leadership activities including

financial analysis, contract negotiations and ongoing management of operational resource (vendor) relationships

Proven ability to manage the financial and capital resources of a department of this size and scope

Strong understanding of healthcare revenue cycle processes (billing, coding, payer contracting, etc.)

Ability to lead both tactically (day to day operations) and strategically (see the big picture)

Strong radiation oncology technology knowledge base

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and demonstrated track record in effective communication style (i.e., knowing when, what and how to communicate)
