Director’s LetterAGAIN, what a privilege to be directing a show at the beautiful Historic Crighton The-

atre. For over 40 years, Conroe has taken great pride in this establishment of high quality entertainment within this city.

I would personally like to thank Carolyn and Steve Wong for ALWAYS going the “extra mile” to make the shows presented here such spectacular entertainment.

These two people deserve many kudos for all the endless hours of hard work they put into each production. Carolyn, Steve, and The Board of Directors of STAGE RIGHT consis-tently produce shows that the entire family will enjoy attending. You, the audience, are always their priority. I am so proud to be associated with them.

THANK YOU to Darcy Leach the Assistant Director. She has been by my side for years now, and will always be my great friend. I really appreciate everything you do for each show!! And, you are so kind and gracious to every one, plus funny....we just love you!

THANK YOU to Dinah Mahlman the Choreographer. Dinah, you are the best!! You have made this show fantastic! We have done musicals together for years, and I consider myself blessed each time we do a show together! I hope the Crighton Theatre audiences get to see what a great dancer you are, one of these days.

THANK YOU to Midge Smith, the Musical Director. You are new to our group, and what a superb addition. You are without a doubt the greatest musical director alive! I don’t know how we got so lucky, but I hope you are here to stay!

THANK YOU to Dennis O’Connor who designed and built the set. Wow, you never cease to amaze us. Talk about a Master Carpenter..... You are a genius!

THANK YOU to Katie Kelly who designed the costumes, and sewed most of them. I know the endless hours you spent at the fabric stores, then fittings, then sewing. But those hours really paid off. The costumes are great. You are wonderful!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO WORKED BEHIND THE SCENES....you did such a great job.

TO THE CAST....YOU ARE FANTASTIC! I really appreciate your commitment and the many hours of rehearsals. I have enjoyed working with all of you more than I can say. You made this show so much fun for me.... and to watch it come alive was really exciting!

Life takes us on many journeys, but my favorite one is always to the Crighton Theatre! With love,Tina CafeoDirector

From the Producers:In the production of Hairspray you are about to see you will note that in some cases the skin color of the performer does not match the character they are portraying (not unlike how Edna has been traditionally played by a man), we ask that you use the timeless theatrical concept of “suspension of disbelief” and allow yourself to witness the story and not the racial background (or gender) of the actors. After all, this show is about not judging a book by it’s cover. Wouldn’t it be a beautiful world if we didn’t notice anyone’s ‘cover’ and just danced together as Tracy longs to do? It is our hope that you leave the theatre today with a smile on your face, and a catchy tune stuck in your head that just propels you to dance. Our dearest hope is that you leave here with a little less notice of what makes us different, and a greater appreciation of how we are all the same.Enjoy the show!

Steve & Carolyn Wong

Her two grandsons, Jett and Mason, are the light of her life and she wants to thank them for all they have done to make her life so special. Last, and most important, she wants to thank her hus-band, Manny for a lifetime of happiness......I love ya, honey......I love ya!

DEBORAH BLAKE (Assistant Costumer) is proud to be involved with this production

Page 14: Director’s Letter · Director’s Letter AGAIN, what a privilege to be directing a show at the beautiful Historic Crighton The-atre. For over 40 years, Conroe has taken great pride

of Hairspray. Today’s theater costuming covers so much from Opera to the dark tale of Frankenstein to fun shows such as Young Frankenstein and beach shows to the steam punk Hamlet. Just goes to prove that Any-thing Goes.

DAVE HACKMAN (Set Construction) re-located from Springfield Ill. He is retired and involved in a number of volunteer ac-tivities. These included helping renovate an abandoned theatre in Springfield and helping build sets for the last three years. Enjoyed the ‘work’ and the theatre atmo-sphere so joined the Crighton family.

JANE HALEY (Spotlight Operator) Jane Haley started at Owen Theater, in plays like To Kill a Mockingbird, Bus Stop, King and I, The Odd Couple, White Christmas, & Lion in Winter. This is her second show here in the Crighton Theatre. Jane ran the spotlight for The Wizard of Oz. She enjoys theatre and plans to much more in the Crighton & Owen theatres.

KATIE KELLY (Costume Design & Con-struction) has enjoyed being on stage at the Crighton in The Music Man, Mama Won’t Fly, The Carol Burnett Show and The Miracle Worker. When not on stage, Katie has cre-ated wonderful costumes, worked as Stage Manager and various other backstage du-ties. She is looking forward to participating in many more productions.

PETER KELLY (Lights Engineer) loves the theatre from all his visits to Broadway and community theatre during his 50+ years on Long Island. Peter was in The Mu-sic Man, stage hand in Mama Won’t Fly and has been Light Engineer for The Carol Bur-nett Show, Cinderella, The Miracle Worker, My Three Angels and The Drowsy Chaperone. Being active in the theatre allows Peter & Katie to spend quality time together, doing something they both feel is productive and fun.

JIM KINg (Stage Manager) A student of the dramatic arts for many years, Jim began his career in acting while attending Texas

A&M in the late eighties. A part of the Ag-gie Players, he participated in productions of King Lear, Hamlet, Macbeth and The Rob-ber Bridegroom as well as the setup and tear down for the Broadway musical Cats. After studying acting at Sam Houston State University for two years, Jim joined up with the King’s Fishermen in the Woodlands and performed lead roles in such productions as Papa Was a Preacher, a Neil Simon play called God’s Favorite, Christ in the Concrete City, as well as many others. Always active in the community, Jim lent his talents to the chil-dren’s ministry at Fellowship of the Wood-lands for many years. He was last on the Crighton stage in The Carol Burnett Show.

DARCY LEACH (Asst. Director/Props) feels extremely blessed to be learning what to do from the best, the director, Tina Cafeo. Tina has been a household name since my sister was a little girl. Tracey was the “Lion” and our Mom (R.I.P.) was Aunty Em in a pro-duction many, many years ago. To be at this historical theater with this amazing cast will be forever etched on my mind. My favorite roles were in Footloose, Fiddler on the Roof and Annie. My little dog, “Cosmo” is Toto’s understudy! I’m not sure who rescued who. I love my “awesome” family and they are my reason for breathing! Brittany “I love you more” and the rest of you, too! I would list all of you but then there wouldn’t be room for anyone else’s bio. God Bless!!!

DINAH MAHLMAN (Choreographer) is thrilled to be a part of Hairspray! She was a the-atre educator for thirteen years, directing 30-plus productions; her students won the Group Musical division at the 2012 Interna-tional Thespian Festival and were selected to perform in the prestigious Mainstage Showcase. Dinah has choreographed pro-ductions at the Crighton Theatre, Playhouse 1960, Waller High School, Kempner High School and Houston Family Arts Center; The Wizard of Oz, Winter Wonderettes and Chica-go are among her favorites. She also enjoys being on stage; favorite roles include the title character in The Insanity of Mary Girard and Velma in Chicago. Dinah currently works for the Houston Public Library, where she

hones her theatre skills at Story Time. She would like to thank Tina and the Crighton team for this opportunity to teach some of the nicest (and most talented) kids in town!

DENNIS O’CONNOR (Master Carpenter) Dennis began his love affair with the stage 51 years ago as a street urchin singing with the Cinncinnati Opera in Carmen. He began acting and constructing sets at The Crigh-ton in 1990. This Hairspray set uses Periak-tios...first to appear on the Crighton Stage...Greece..70 BC. He dedicates all of his work to his children Adam, Jonah, Denny and Emmy. Einstein in Arsenic and Old Lace, Jo-seph in My Three Angels, Pelinor in Camelot, Arnold in The Boys Next Door and Harry in Stalag 17 are among his favorite roles on The Crighton Stage. “Please support The Historic Crighton as your hometown the-atre. Consider an endowment to the Crigh-ton Theatre Foundation for renovations being planned and/or become a sustaining member of Stage Right,” he says. “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” – Albert Einstein

ROgER ORMISTON (Light Designer) has performed on stage in over 40 produc-tions since 1974. He currently works behind the scenes at both the Owen Theatre and the Crighton Theatre in Conroe. He lives in Conroe with his wife, Shann Powers and two dog-ters, Shelby and Maggie. He is a home inspector and owner of 123 Home In-spections.

DENISE DE BOLD (Scenic Design) Denise DeBold has a passion for the arts and serving her community. In Florida, she served as the Visual Arts Director on a twelve member team that utilized a vol-unteer cast of over three hundred and

provided the community with a theatrical experience for free. In June of 2009, Denise moved to Texas, and has since been fea-tured in the Houston Chronicle for her art work and community service. She regularly volunteers for the Montgomery County Women’s Center (MCWC) at their Some-thing Special store in the Woodlands, where sales benefits more than 60 battered wom-en and their children. She is also an active member of the Assistance League of Mont-gomery County (ALMC) where she chairs one of their many philanthropic programs serving the needs of Montgomery County community. She also recently served on the decorating committee for the CASA gala.

MIDgE SMITH (Musical Director) Midge is tickled that her very first show in Texas is with Stage Right at such a cool historic theatre! Hairspray will be her 40th show she has done since quitting her day job to pursue music full-time in Denver Colorado seven years ago. Midge began playing pia-no at age four and hasn’t stopped yet! She specializes in accompanying, sight-reading, vocal coaching, music directing, and teach-ing private piano from her studio “Music by Midge, LLC”. She and her sweet husby Reed just moved to The Woodlands in Feb-ruary and are soaking in the humidity, warm weather and friendly people! A special thanks to Carolyn for this opportunity, and to the entire crazy, fun, energetic cast for instantly becoming my musical family!

STEVEN WONg (Sound Engineer / Pro-ducer) started in theatre 40 years ago as a drapery “consultant” and was “convinced” to return onstage for The Music Man, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Anything Goes. He is generally seen behind the scenes as produc-er, lights engineer or stage manager. Steve is a founder of STAGE RIGHT and serves as the board’s treasurer. Love to family – Caro-lyn, Michael, and Harley.

The air by the river, the song of the red bird, and the feel of the soil in her fingers are all she desires, yet her plans seem thwarted by her hyper-vigilant son and controlling daughter-in-law, but the journey to realize her last wish examines love, hope, and faith.
