DESCRIPTION

Lewis and Clark had a guide when they journeyed through Idaho and you’ll experience a more rewarding trip if you do, too. There are over 350 licensed outfitters in Idaho offering excursions from whitewater rafting to jet boating, naturetreks to hunting expedions. Every outfitter operating on public lands in Idaho must be licensed with the State Outfitters & Guides Licensing Board. Each must meet rigid standards of performance and comply with all state and federal regulations. Outfitters must also be certified in first aid and have an intimate knowledge of the area in which they operate.

guided adventures.Lewis and Clark had a guide when they journeyed through Idaho and you’ll experience a more rewarding trip if you do, too. There are over 350 licensed outfitters in Idaho offering excursions from whitewater rafting to jet boating, nature treks to hunting expedions.

You can expect Idaho’s outfitters to be friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association (IOGA) is a non-profit organization representing a majority of the state’s full-time licensed outfitters and guides.

planning tips:Take the time to find an outfitter or guide that best matches your interest and needs. Here are some helpful hints:

1. All trips are different, so identify the level of adventure you want, based on the experience and physical capabilities of everyone in your party. Adventures range from easy-going afternoon jaunts to thrill-seeking multi-day excursions.2. Determine the length of trip you prefer and how much you want to spend.

3. Idaho is a big state. Narrow down the location of your trip. There are contrasts in climate, terrain and scenery statewide, allowing for uniquely different trips.

4. Decide how much individual customization you require. Some trips focus on a specific hobby or other personal interest. Also, identify any special dietary, access or other personal needs you may have.

wateradventures

water, water everywhere. With more than 3,100 miles of whitewater rivers throughout Idaho, you’re sure to find at least one perfect waterway to create a memorable adventure. Choose from white-knuckled roller-coaster rides to dreamy drifts through the cottonwood trees. Select from inflatable rafts, kayaks, canoes, drift boats, jet boats or do-it-yourself paddleboats. Take a trip of either a few hours to several days in length on some of the wildest rivers in the country.

float trips. For a more leisurely excursion, consider a whitewater float trip. Many outfitters offer half-day and full-day trips. To enjoy the full flavor of an Idaho river experience, book a trip over several days. You’ll see more scenery, splash over different types of whitewater and be more likely to view wildlife in a natural setting. You’ll overnight at campsites along the river and enjoy exceptional food. Outfitters take great pride in their culinary abilities and many offer gourmet trips. Dutch oven cookery is standard along the river and you’ll be enthralled by the style and quality of cuisine served on a remote beach.

When considering a float trip for your family, many outdoor enthusiasts choose Idaho. Wildlife abounds on most trips, providing children a fascinating glimpse into the mysteries of nature. Plus, the competence and friendliness of Idaho’s river guides is world-renowned. Consider a unique river adventure trip for your next family vacation.

jet boats take off to adventure. If seeing a lot of river in a short amount of time is your idea of fun, then consider a jet boat trip. Boats depart from several spots including Lewiston, White Bird, Riggins, Salmon and Hells Canyon Dam for one to three-day excursions. Safe, comfortable and fast, aluminum hull jet boats are built to ascend forbidding rapids and maneuver between boulders with amazing agility. They are usually the best way to get to prime campsites, beaches and fishing holes. To catch native Idaho steelhead trout and sturgeon, knowledgeable guides can get you to the best spots where the mighty fish lurk.

middle fork of the salmon. Among the first rivers officially designated “wild and scenic,” this is one of the top 10 whitewater rivers in the world. It is known for its catch-

and-release trout fishery, invigorating hot springs, wildlife viewing and ancient pictographs. Class III and IV rapids run through

the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the largest forest wilderness in the lower 48 states. Trips on the Middle Fork of the Salmon can be booked for three, five or six days, and offer the quintessential Idaho whitewater experience.

main salmon. The legendary “River of No Return,” the longest free-flowing river within one state in the lower 48 states, is a choice pool-and-drop river with roller-coaster rapids. Between Salmon and Riggins, the river is as relaxing and as remote as it can be. You can book a full-day or half-day trip in the big water down-river from Riggins or near Stanley, Challis and Salmon, where the river is smaller. There are several stretches of river ideal for day trips featuring exciting rapids and beautiful scenery.

lower main salmon. At Riggins, the Salmon runs north through narrow basalt gorges, then opens into grassy palisades until it joins the Snake River north of Hells Canyon.

This section of the Salmon is suitable for half-day, full-day or multi-day trips ranging from 10 to 52 miles.

snake river. The mighty Snake River flows across the vast plain of southern Idaho to ultimately surge through Hells Canyon. Along the way, it offers a variety of

recreational opportunities - fly fishing on the South Fork and Henrys Fork in Eastern Idaho, rafting the Murtaugh and Hagerman sections in South Central Idaho or the sheer fun of rafting or jet boating through the majestic Hells Canyon.

payette. The South Fork is an advanced whitewater river with one, two or three-day trips available. Trips can be adapted for different skill levels at various times of the season. The 11-mile Cabarton Run on the North Fork is a great mix of quiet scenic stretches and mild class I-III rapids. The Main Payette River is perfect for families looking for a half-day trip, while the North Fork is one of the finest advanced kayak runs in the world with over twenty class IV and V rapids in just 16 miles. Only experienced kayakers should attempt these challenging waters.

selway. Emerging from the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, this is the most secluded of Idaho’s rivers. There are 60 miles of large class III, IV, and V rapids for a few months in the spring and early summer, making a trip on the Selway a true expedition into Idaho’s wilderness. Be sure to take some time to admire Selway Falls. Book your trip eight to 12 months in advance, because only one daily launch is allowed.

lochsa. The Nez Perce Indians named this river “rough water” for good reason. There are more than 40 class III and IV rapids with swift, technical water in the upper section, which can deliver a drop of about 40 feet per mile. Bordered by forests of cedar and fir on high mountain slopes, this river parallels the route Lewis and Clark followed in their search for a northwest passage. The famed explorers journeyed through Idaho over 200 years ago, in 1805-1806. Near the Powell

Ranger Station you can see evidence of their journey at Colt Killed Creek.

owyhee/bruneau/ jarbidge. River running season can be fleeting in the high desert of

Southwestern Idaho – April through June. The Owyhee is a remote, high-desert river that flows through deep

canyons filled with wildlife. The Bruneau is a 32-mile-long river that squeezes through a narrow, deep canyon.

Watch out for tumultuous Five Mile Rapids which drops 100 feet per mile for nearly five miles. The Jarbidge,

which flows into the Bruneau, is rocky, steep and beautiful with an equally short season, making an excursion there all

the more exciting.

fishing regions in idaho1 panhandle regionBig lakes and big fish characterize North Idaho. Lake Pend Oreille is famous for kamloops, Priest Lake for mackinaw, Lake Coeur d’Alene cutthroat and monster chinook. These lakes also hold kokanee. Stream anglers will find trout in the St. Joe and Coeur d’Alene rivers.

2 clearwater region

Hard-fighting steelhead return from the ocean to the Clearwater River in the spring and fall. Its tributary streams provide solitude for trout fishermen. When the backcountry opens in July, the North Fork of the Clearwater, Lochsa and Selway are the best rivers for fishing. On the Snake River near Lewiston, anglers seek steelhead and catch-and-release sturgeon.

3 so uthwest regionCascade Reservoir and Payette Lake offer excursions for

trout and perch, along with winter ice fishing. Boat fishermen catch catfish, bass, crappie, trout

and sturgeon on the Snake River and its reservoirs along the Oregon

idaho is full of suprises. It has a natural and cultural diversity as great as that of any other state in the nation. It’s also a large state covering over 83,000 square miles, making it larger than all of New England. The border with Washington and Oregon extends nearly 500 miles from north to south. The northern panhandle is less than 50 miles wide, but the southern portion of Idaho stretches 300 miles from east to west.

Most of northern Idaho is forested while the most notable feature of southern Idaho is the Snake River Plain, which sweeps across the state from Ashton in the east to Weiser in the west. Much of central Idaho is pristine wilderness that covers a granite rock called the Idaho Batholith. This wealth of high country sprawling between the Snake River Plain and the panhandle is an outdoor paradise.

It has been said that if all of Idaho’s mountains were flattened out the state would be as big as Texas. Indeed Idaho is a majestic land with mountains and hills everywhere. Every county in the state has a lake, a reservoir, a river and countless streams, all loaded with game fish. High alpine lakes are so numerous that many remain nameless yet are still accessible via trails. Chances are good for encountering wildlife on a pack trip or hike into Idaho’s mountains. Here in Idaho, the deer and the antelope really do play.

Most of Idaho’s major cities are in easy reach of its great outdoors, much to the delight of its citizens. Visitors will find many ways in which to explore outdoor Idaho. There are numerous small towns and villages with pleasant Bed and Breakfast Inns and Lodges, whose proprietors can suggest recreational pursuits nearby. Staying at a guest ranch or lodge in Idaho’s back country will give your family and friends a truly memorable experience.

backcountry comfort. Because Idaho has more backcountry adventures than any other state in the lower 48, you may need some help finding the right place for your unforgettable vacation. Assistance and advice are readily available from the guest ranches and outfitters identified in this publication. They will help to ensure that your trip is in good hands, and provide you and your family with valuable information. Idaho outfitters must be licensed with the Idaho Outfitters & Guides Licensing Board. Each must meet rigid standards of performance and comply with all state and federal regulations. They must be certified in first aid and thoroughly know the area in which they operate.

hey dude!Idaho’s guest ranches range from working

Many of Idaho’s working ranches have been in a family for generations, providing you with a rare opportunity to absorb the West by participating in a real cattle drive or doing other ranch chores. You can count on wagon rides, barbeques and marshmallows over campfires but you may also be able to

pan for gold, learn archery or target shooting, or join a wellness program. Many have rafts or jet boats for wet and wild excursions on nearby rivers. Others are near shimmering lakes and add fishing to their repertoire. For a truly unique guest ranch vacation, consider a big game hunt in the fall, a fly-fishing experience on a world-renowned stream or a snowmobile or ski outing in the winter. Your hosts will share with you warm camaraderie, genuine family hospitality, great home-cooked food and activities for everyone.

trail rides and summer pack trips. Introduce yourself, friends and family to beautiful scenery on a memorable and safe trail ride for an hour or longer if you wish. There’s no better way to see the beauty of Idaho’s backcountry than from the back of a horse. It’s a pace that is perfect for friends and family while enjoying the high alpine vistas and the

magnificent serenity of Idaho’s wildlands. Encounter wildlife native to the area, enjoy stream or lake fishing, followed by star-filled skies and evenings shared around the campfire. And you don’t have to be an expert horseman to experience either a trail ride or longer summer pack

trip. For a unique pack experience, think about llama trekking. Allow the animal to carry your provisions while you enjoy a backcountry hike or backpacking experience.

skiing & snowmobiling. Winter in Idaho is just as fun as the

warm weather months. You’ll find cross-country ski lodges in the Red River area, the Gospel Hump Wilderness Area, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the Tetons and the Salmon River Mountains. These Nordic lodges are warm and intimate and offer a nice change of pace from the large alpine ski resorts. Helicopter and/or backcountry downhill guided ski trips are available in the Sun Valley, Cascade/ Donnelly, McCall, Fairfield and Driggs areas. If you’re feeling more adventurous, try hut-to-hut and yurt-to-yurt ski trips. Each hut or yurt has wood stoves, hot meals and warm beds. For those craving a faster pace, there are more than 7,200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails to be ridden. With even more miles of powder in wide open country available, you may find the knowledge and experience of a snowmobile guide helpful. • Dedicated to conserving Idaho’s

famous hunting!Idaho is famous for hunting. It has the widest variety of game in the U.S. including trophy elk, mule deer, two species of bighorn sheep, antelope, bear, moose, cougar, wolves, mountain goat, white-tailed deer, waterfowl and upland game birds. The seasons are as long as 65 days in the backcountry and overall success rates are high. Many deer and elk permits are easily available because of Idaho’s unique system for clients of outfitters. There is little hunter congestion and effective management policies promote healthy species growth and control.

If you are a non-resident, you must buy a non-resident license, which are available at most sport shops around the state.

get an outfitter.Hiring a licensed outfitter is one of the best ways to enhance your hunting or fishing experience. One major advantage to booking your hunting trip through an Idaho outfitter is that deer and elk tags are easy to obtain. The Idaho Fish and Game Commission sets aside elk and deer tags specifically for non-resident hunters who book with licensed outfitters. Idaho outfitters have tags available long after neighboring states sell out.

big game.Idaho is known for some of the best elk hunting in the world. Deer are found throughout the state, with whitetails found primarily north of the Salmon River. Mule deer are more numerous and found mostly in southern Idaho. Antelope roam in southern Idaho, while black bears prefer forested areas. Mountain lions are seen statewide.

Idaho provides many opportunities for combination hunts, either with two big game species or with big game and

upland game or waterfowl.

species!

Moose, mountain goats and big-horn sheep are Idaho’s trophy species. There are two subspecies of bighorns, Rocky Mountain and California. Hunters are allowed to harvest one of each in a lifetime, if they are lucky enough to draw the permits. Moose and goat are also once in a lifetime, but there are exceptionsfor moose permits left over from a drawing or won in the lottery drawing that supports the hunting and fishing access program. Most years you can add fall steelhead fishing to the mix.

select a hunting outfitter. Idaho was one of the first states in the West to license outfitters and guides. Outfitters are the owners/employers and must be bonded. Outfitters employ licensed guides. The Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association is a non-profit business trade organization representing a majority of the state’s full-time licensed businesses. IOGA members set the standard and are committed to quality service while conserving Idaho’s land, water and wildlife.

Often a guide can mean the difference between a successful trip and just an ordinary one. With their experience and

intimate knowledge of the area, they can point out highlights that you might otherwise miss.

This is especially true if you’re planning a big game hunt in Idaho. When selecting a hunting outfitter, consider seeking the answers to the following questions:

1. In what type of terrain is the hunt, including altitude? 2. Is the hunt a pack-in using stock and tent camping, a lodge setting or some other combination of access and lodging?

3. What is the success rate of hunters using your services? Ask for references of both successful and non-successful hunters.

upland game. Many species are found in the state, including wild turkey, pheasant, sage grouse, two kinds of quail, three species of forest grouse, chukar, Hungarian partridge and doves. Ask an outfitter about “cast and blast” trips that combine steelhead fishing and chukar hunting. Upland game seasons begin early and some last into the fall.
