The Founder of Rotary
Paul P. Harris, the founder of Rotary was born
in Racine, Wisconsin, USA on 19 April 1868.
The second of six children of George N. Harris
and Cornelia Bryan Harris but moved at the
age of 3 to Wallingford, Vermont, to be raised
by his father’s parents. Paul later credited the
friendliness and tolerance he found in Vermont
as his inspiration for the creation of Rotary.
Paul was educated at Princeton and graduated in Law for the University
of Iowa City in 1891. He did not immediately begin practicing law.
Instead he spent the next five years travelling widely, supporting himself
with a great variety of jobs. He worked as a newspaper reporter in San
Francisco, a teacher at a business college in Los Angeles, a cowboy in
Colorado, a desk clerk in Jacksonville, Florida, as a travelling salesman
for a granite company, covering both the U.S. and Europe, and twice
tended cattle on a freighter to England. In July 1910, he married Jean
Thomson, a Scottish girl and co-member of the Chicago Prairie Club.
Paul settled in Chicago in 1896 and began to practise law. One evening
in 1900, Paul visited the suburban home of a professional friend. After
dinner, as they strolled through the neighbourhood, Paul’s friend
introduced him to several local merchants as his friends. It was here
Paul conceived the idea of a club that could recapture some of the
friendly spirit among businessmen in small communities.
‘Why not in Chicago have a fellowship composed of just one
man from each of many different occupations, without restriction
as to their politics or religion, with broad tolerance of each
other’s opinion. In such a fellowship could there not be mutual
helpfulness?’
However, it was not until the evening of 23 February 1905, that he met
with friends, Silvester Schiele – coal merchant, Gus Loehr – a mining
-

engineer and Hiram Shorey – a merchant tailor, to discuss his idea of a
club focusing on fellowship and friendship. They met in Room 711 in
the Unity Building, Dearborn St, Chicago, which was the office of Gus
Loehr. This is often called the birthplace of Rotary and the gathering is
commonly regarded as the first official Rotary club meeting.
For the first few months the club was known as ‘The Booster Club’
since one of the main purposes of the group was to “boost” business
contacts. However, because its members met in rotation at their
places of business, the name “Rotary” was suggested and adopted.
Club membership grew rapidly; the idea spread, and similar clubs were
formed in other cities. The essence of Rotary’s purpose was, and is, to
advocate high standards in business, professional and community life.
Paul Harris was the first President of the National Association of Rotary
Clubs (in 1910), and also the International Association of Rotary Clubs
(the name later changed to Rotary International) in the year 1912. He
was active in Rotary until his death on 27 January 1947.
Paul Harris once wrote ‘This is a changing world and we must
change with it. His story of Rotary will be written again and again.’
On Rotary’s 36th Anniversary, he said: ‘Rotary is a miniature model
of a world at peace – one which might advantageously be studied
by nations; Rotarians believe that the universal application of
tolerance and friendliness would bring about the international
peace so earnestly desired by everyone.’
Today, Rotarians sit in counsel with the United Nations and discuss
many issues of world health and peace. Rotary continues to expand its
global horizon by offering hope for international understanding and
peace through its educational and humanitarian programs.
The seed that Paul sowed in 1905 has blossomed in to a large tree
covering over 200 countries and geographical regions, with over 34,000
Clubs with a membership of over 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.

A Letter from the RI President 2016-17
Dear fellow Rotarians: I embarked on the road to Rotary in part because of my friend and mentor George Campbell, who taught me the importance of civic responsibility. After starting down that road, I encountered many other Rotarians walking the same path, who offered their help and made sure I kept moving in the right direction. I am the person I am today because of Rotary. And to be a member of the Rotary family is to be a part of something much bigger than yourself. It means that you are part of a worldwide team; together, we have provided extraordinary service to the world. We are closer than ever to achieving our promise of polio eradication. Through service projects, we have met the needs of local and global communities. We have developed strategic partnerships that allow us to work with like-minded organisations and achieve an even great impact. Today, our world is depending on us to do even more. Now is the time to capitalise on our success and to catapult Rotary forward to be an even greater force for good in the world. To do this, we must work together. Remember that today is the first day of the rest of your life, and how you spend it is up to you. I know that, together, we can accomplish great things this year as we continue the tradition of Rotary Serving Humanity. Sincerely,
John F. Germ 2016-17 President, Rotary International

CLUB VISIONING
Vision Facilitation helps a Rotary Club design its own vision, and then sets out the steps necessary to achieve that vision. The result is not a vision decided by District or by Rotary International, but instead a vision designed and endorsed by the Club’s own members. This vision will help to ensure consensus, continuity and consistency in your Club’s leadership and planning, to set the stage for future progress. The vision process will help Club’s formulate their Strategic Plan. For more information, visit http://rotary9520.org/Page/club-visioning

Crisis Management Response for All Rotarians DEFINITION A crisis is defined for our District’s purposes is a situation where a Rotarian or non-Rotarian involved in a Rotary event or program is 1. Killed 2. The victim or perpetrator of a serious sexual crime witnessed by others 3. Seriously injured 4. Perceived to be in real danger
WITNESS RESPONSE The Rotarian witness most closely involved in a crisis (‘The Contact’) needs to immediately 1. call for immediate help if needed – dial 000 2. call the police – dial 000 3. inform the District Governor Sam Camporeale 0401 990 936 or if
unavailable, DGE Bob Cooper 0418 802 986. 4. make notes and endeavour to remember all the details of what happened
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT The District Governor (or DGE) will 1. advise RI Parramatta 2. set up ‘The Crisis Management Team’ (including ‘The Contact’) 3. ‘The Crisis Management Team’ is to come from previously selected experts
in Media Communications, Sexual Abuse, Insurance, Medical Matters Crisis Counselling, Travel Arrangements
4. ‘The Crisis Management Team’ will work together to obtain the best possible outcome to the crisis
All Long and Short Term Youth Exchange students from July 2011 onwards will be wearing a MedicAlert® bracelet or pendant which will provide immediate access for police and emergency service personnel to the club counsellor, to the next of kin, emergency insurance details and, medical history, etc. Note: As most crises will be subject to a police investigation, it is essential ‘The Contact’ does not discuss the incident with others particularly the media. ‘The Contact’ should also advise other witnesses a police investigation will most likely occur and therefore the need for their confidentiality.

Inner Wheel
International Inner Wheel is most probably the largest women’s voluntary service organization in the world, and holds Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status with the United Nations. It has representatives in the three UN centres of Geneva, New York and Vienna. Our District in Australia (District A70) now comprises 7 clubs whose members actively promote the ideals of personal, community and international service. Women associated with Rotary in any way are welcomed as members, and New Generations Clubs are being formed. The objects are:
to promote true friendship
to encourage the ideals of personal service
to foster international understanding
Further information can be obtained by contacting the Chairman of Inner Wheel District A70 Kay Haig on Ph: (08) 8531 1726 or 0421 256 465 or [email protected]. The official web site is: www.innerwheelaustralia.org.au
PROBUS
Want to know more? The Probus movement had its genesis in two ancestors — both in the U.K. and both established by Rotary clubs. The first club in the South Pacific Region was the Probus Club of Kapiti Coast, New Zealand in 1974 followed by the Probus Club of Hunters Hill, N.S.W Australia in 1976 and The Philippines in 2007. Today there are 2265 accredited Probus clubs in the region with an estimated membership of 189,000+. PROBUS – Tomorrow’s Vision for Active Retirees For information on district Probus matters and sponsoring the formation of a new Probus club please contact the District Probus Co-ordinator:

Use of Rotary Name and Emblem
The “Rotary” name and gearwheel emblem, including the emblems and logos of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation programs and projects are known collectively as the Rotary Marks. The word “Rotary” in connection with or in the name of an activity of a club or a group of clubs must relate directly to that club or group of clubs. The activity is not permitted to be related directly or indirectly to Rotary International. The word “International” is not to be used in connection with or in the name of the club. Clubs and Districts are welcome to use the Rotary emblem, in association with your Club or District projects and are requested to name accordingly. Guidelines on the use of Rotary marks are provided in the Brand Centre at: www.rotary.org. The Voice and Visual Guidelines will assist. They can be found in My Rotary at: Manage>Brand Centre>Guidelines>Voice and Visual Identify Guidelines.
