    FOREWORD

Building a better BritainThere is a college in everymajor community in Yorkshireand the Humber, and thisdirectory highlights the vitalwork they carry out on behalfof businesses and employers.

In a report called Better OffBritain, the CBI calls foremployees to be more skilledas this benefits not just thebusiness and the employee butalso the wider UK economy.

Colleges are ideally placed tomeet this aim and can provideeducation and training fromentry level qualifications up to foundationdegrees, higher national certificates anddiplomas, and higher apprenticeships. They work closely with local employers toensure that students gain the necessaryskills to join local businesses.

In addition to qualifications, collegesteach young people employability skills, such as teamwork and leadership, whichemployers say they need. Continuousprofessional development for existingstaff is equally important to trainingyoung people, and this is something thatcolleges work with employers to provide.

Yorkshire and the Humber has 36colleges, comprising general FE (21), sixthform (nine) and specialist (six). Each yearour colleges provide more than 285,000students with learning opportunities. They are the first-choice option for eitheracademic or vocational courses for morethan 80,000 young people, and 175,000

adults choose to study in our colleges, acquiring the skills and qualifications thatenable them to pursue specific careersor retrain for new opportunities. Collegesalso deliver more than 30,000apprenticeships and work with 19,480businesses across the region each year.

Higher education is provided by 25 of theregion’s colleges and more than 15,000students choose to study for higher levelqualifications and degrees in this way.Collectively, colleges make a significantcontribution to the region’s economy, with an annual turnover of £764 millionand employing more than 18,000 people.

This directory provides the most up-to-date information available in January2015. I hope you find it a helpful andvaluable resource.
