Many teams would look at the loss of 20 letterwinners as a cause for trepida-tion, but Long Beach State’s fortunes are defined as much by success after their college careers as during them. With a team-record 11 players chosen in the 2008 MLB draft, five coming in the first three rounds, the Dirtbag tradition of moving players on to the next level remains unchanged.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on having a lot of guys drafted, and I feel that professional baseball looks very highly upon our program,” said head coach Mike Weathers. “I think that the number was higher last year because we kept a number of seniors who ordinarily would have left after their junior year. The quality of the team last year was di-rectly impacted by that senior influence.”With the departure of those players, however, the questions for 2009 regard where the Dirtbags will find leadership, despite plenty of talent on the roster. “It’s a completely different team this year,” stated Weathers.

“We have players that have been in the program for a few years, but we don’t have players with the cred-ibility of going through an entire season. We have guys that know what we want out of our program, there’s no question that they know how we want to play, it’s a question of can they do it.”

On the field, the team returns just two starters from last year and only one who started more than 40 games—sopho-more outfielder Jonathan Jones. Jones remains a key piece of an outfield that should play a big part in the team’s success. An All-Big West selection last season after he hit .343 with an on-base percentage of .429 as the team’s leadoff hitter, Jones provides speed and a solid defensive presence in center field.

Also returning is Jordan Casas, one of the fastest players on the team, who im-proved throughout the season and found success in conference play, hitting .302 on the year. Tre Dennis is a newcomer who will round out the outfield. A transfer from Southwestern CC, Dennis stole 21 bases and hit .332 in 2008.

“The outfield is our most drastically changed position, since we are full of speed in all three positions, said Weath-ers. “We’re expecting those three guys to cause a lot of havoc on the basepaths.”

Other players that will be seeing time in the outfield include junior T.J. Mittels-

taedt, a player with two years of LBSU experience under his belt, along with freshman Matt Avery, a local prod-uct from Los Alamitos High School who is a talented hitter who will receive at-bats.

In the infield, another returning starter will lead the way while making a transition of his own. Steve Tinoco, a .304 career hitter, used the summer to change positions. While Tinoco had primarily played in the outfield and as a designated hitter, he made the move to first

base where the coach-ing staff is relying on him to shoulder the load. “We’re asking a

lot of Steve, but we feel that he’s handling it well,”

said Weathers.

Taylor Krick is another returning player who will help provide depth at the corner positions, playing first base in 2009 as well as third base where he made 23 starts last year as a sophomore. Rylan Sandoval is the favorite to hold down the hot corner. A highly-touted junior college transfer in 2007, Sandoval hit .263 in his first year with Long Beach State. “I think that Rylan Sandoval is the key at third,” said Weathers. “If he plays like he has during fall practice, that will allow Krick to play at either position and give us some options. I feel very confident in the experience we have in the corners.”

In the middle, sophomore Devin Lohman will be the next shortstop in a line of players that has found tremen-dous success, from Bobby Crosby to Troy Tulowitzki to last year’s starter Danny Espinosa, a third-round draft choice in 2008. Lohman split time with Jason Tweedy at second base as a freshman, and will now move over to his natural position at shortstop. “I think that Devin is a really talented kid, and will have a chance to really break out this year,” said Weathers. Lohman will be backed up by freshman Kirk Singer, a teammate of Matt Avery at Los Alamitos High School. The other half of the double-play duo will be manned by another freshman, Derek Legg. A switch-hitter from Vista Mur-rieta High School, Legg is another player that will be counted on to play a big role immediately. “Derek knows the game of baseball as well as any freshman I’ve been around; he knows where to be, how to play the game and turns the double-play as well as any player we’ve had here in a while,” said Weathers. “I really think he’s a player that will help solidify our infield in a position that I was a little wor-ried about.”

Behind the plate, the Dirtbags will have three options to choose from. Kip Masuda enters the year as the favorite to win the position. A fourth-year senior, Masuda was stuck on the bench behind Travis Howell the last two seasons, but the experienced veteran knows his way around the pitching staff and under-JONATHAN JONES

stands what pitching coach Jon Strauss is looking for from the battery. Sopho-more John Hill, another returning player, hit .296 in 22 games last year before fall-ing ill, and junior college transfer Kellen Hoime is also rapidly improving.

“I really believe that both Kip and John are ready to step in, and it gives us two weapons behind the plate, particularly since they’re pretty different as players,” said Weathers.

As with Jones and Tinoco coming back to be the lone returning starters in the outfield and infield respectively, the Dirtbags will be giving a lot of responsi-bility to Jake Thompson, the team’s only returning starting pitcher. Thompson started on Sundays in 2008, taking the role as a freshman after skipping his senior year at Wilson High School. Since he’s the team’s only returning starter, Thompson will be asked to take over as the team’s ace. “Jake did a nice, consis-tent job of pitching on Sundays, giving us a chance to win every week. Hopefully he can carry that over to pitching on Friday night,” said Weathers.

The rest of the rotation is up for grabs among a mixed group of veteran and in-coming pitchers. Manny McElroy returns for his senior season. Penciled in as a starter in 2008, he started the team’s first Tuesday game against San Diego be-fore losing the rest of the year due to in-jury. Tyler Topp then filled in as a Tuesday starter, making five starts and posting a 3.65 ERA as part of 12 appearances on the year in a long-relief role. Finally, Adam Wilk, a lefthander who finished with a 1.26 ERA over 15 appearances, is also looking to make the transition to a starting role.

Among the newcomers, another lefty, Jeff Lease earned all-conference honors at American River College and was draft-ed by the Rays in the 46th round. Andrew Gagnon is an impressive freshman from Liberty High School in Brentwood who also turned down being drafted in the 10th round to come to The Beach.

“It’s the first time since I took over that we haven’t brought back two starting pitchers,” noted Weathers. “Because of that, somebody out of that group is going to have to emerge.”

On the back end, Chabot Junior Col-lege transfer Charles Ruiz and senior Dustin Rasco will combine to provide a 1-2 punch to close out games. Rasco has spent the last two years primarily as a set-up man for Bryan Shaw, while Ruiz comes to the program after picking up five saves with Chabot.

STEVE TINOCO

“Charlie is very capable, and Dustin is our most experienced and mature pitcher out of the bullpen. He has a great mentality for the position,” said Weath-ers. The rest of the bullpen will be more familiar to fans, as four pitchers return. Lefthanders Jason Markovitz and David Born as well as righthanders David Brown and Anthony Carillo return for the 49ers after spot duty last season. They are joined by Mark Lincoln from Ameri-can River College along with a number of freshmen who will be in the mix to see time on the mound.

With another challenging schedule in 2009, Long Beach State waits to see whether the potential just under the sur-face will be realized with a team that is cohesive, ready, and new. “This has been the most fun team to coach this fall that

I’ve had, and they’re as close as any I’ve seen,” said Weath-

ers. “If they believe that it’s their time, and they can step in and

are prepared to succeed, then

it speaks a lot for us and where our success will be.”

Dirtbag Baseball has continued a tradition of success since Mike Weathers took over in 2001, as the 49er skipper has guided The Beach to a 263-152 (.633) mark in seven seasons at the helm. Over that time, LBSU has reached back-to-back Super Regionals (2003, 2004), produced just the second back-to-back 40-win seasons in school history and has made a habit of hosting the NCAA postseason at Blair Field, including last season as Long Beach State advanced to the postseason after earning the Big West title, the program’s eighth.

The 2008 squad reached the top 10 in the country en route to the Big West automatic berth, earning Weathers his second Big West Coach of the Year award. The team also had a tremendous amount of talent moving on to the next level, as the Dirtbags had a record 11 players drafted in the MLB draft, led by Big West Tri-Pitcher of the Year Andrew Liebel, marking the fourth straight year The Beach has won the award.

In 17 years as a head coach Weathers has compiled a 542-432-2 (.551) record at Utah, Chapman and Long Beach State. Weathers has been with the LBSU program since 1993, resulting in two College World Series, and 14 NCAA appearances.

In the summer of 2007, Weathers was the field manager for Team USA, com-pleting a trifecta in which he played for the Americans in 1970, was an assis-tant during the summer of 2003 and manager in 2007. He won silver medals three times, each time finishing second to the Cubans. In 2003 and 2007 the Americans were runners-up at the Pan Am Games, while in 1970, Weathers played on the World Cup team. The 2007 team finished 25-12.

The 2007 season may have been one of his finest efforts. Not only did he win his 500th career game late in the year, but he also led a team, featuring 21 underclassmen to a 39-20 mark and second place Big West finish. This was following a 2006 campaign in which the team fell one win short of an NCAA Regional (29-27) playing the toughest schedule in the country.

In 2005, The Beach led the nation in ERA (2.53), producing the lowest ERA since 1956 as LBSU went 37-22 and hosted an NCAA Regional at Blair Field. The Dirtbags kept rolling in 2004, as they were led by National Pitcher of the Year, Jered Weaver, and went 40-21, reaching their second-straight Super Regional, after getting by Stanford in the Regional in Palo Alto. The Beach at one point were ranked No. 4 in the nation and routinely played to near capacity crowds. LBSU finished fourth in the nation in ERA and sixth in fielding percentage, and saw eight players drafted, led by Weaver (12th overall), fellow starter and 2005 Major Leaguer Jason Vargas (2nd round) and outfielder John Bowker (3rd round).

In 2003 the Dirtbags produced their first 40-win season since 1998, their first regular season Big West title since 1997 and for the first time hosted an NCAA Regional at Blair Field. Weathers earned his first Big West Conference Coach of the Year honor after guiding the team to an 16-5 conference mark. The team finished the year in Palo Alto in the Super Regional, at 41-20. Statisically, the Dirtbags led the nation in fielding percentage (.980), setting a new school-re-cord in the process, as well as ranking fifth in the nation in ERA (2.99). During the playoffs, six players were drafted, led by two second round selections-- Abe Alvarez and Todd Jennings. Alvarez and fellow All-American Jered Weaver produced a collegiate first in 2003, as the first set of teammates ever to be named co-conference Pitchers of the Year.

Following the 2003 season, Weathers joined Team USA as an assistant coach for the summer, as the team earned a silver medal at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic, thanks in large part to the National Pitcher of the Summer, Weaver.

In his first season at the helm of LBSU baseball, The Beach went 39-21, and finished in second place in the Big West, one of the nation’s toughest confer-ences. The 39 wins were the most for the program since the College World Series year of 1998. The Beach advanced to the Regional Finals, before being eliminated in Palo Alto. LBSU ranked among the nation’s leaders in both team ERA (11th-3.54) and batting average (22nd-.323) and produced eight draft picks, including second round pick, and current Mariner Jeremy Reed.

On August 1, 2001, Mike Weathers became the sixth head coach in Long Beach State history. Weathers served as an assistant under Dave Snow from 1993 to 2001, the final year as the associate head coach.

Before joining the 49ers, Weathers served nine years as the head baseball coach at his alma mater, Chapman College (1984-1992) and two years as the head baseball coach at the University of Utah (1980-81). He also was an as-sociate athletic director for six years at Chapman.

Weathers led Chapman to three playoff appearances and helped transition the team from Division II to Division I. Weathers turned Chapman into a national Division II contender, posting a 47-14-2 record, and an NCAA playoff berth, in his first season (1984). The Panthers were 239-241-2 (.496) in his eight years, including another NCAA playoff appearance in 1990. At Utah, the Utes went 40-39 from 1980 to 1981.

Interestingly enough, Weathers’ first Division-I win was against Long Beach State, while at Utah, a 14-9 triumph over the 49ers in 1980 as Utah improved to 8-3. Weathers first career win came on April 11, 1980 in the Utes’ second game over Grand Canyon, a 4-3 win.

Weathers is a 1971 graduate of Chapman, where he was a two-time All-American in baseball. Weathers was chosen to represent the U.S. in the World Games in South America in 1970. He was drafted by the Oakland A’s in 1971 and played as high as AAA until 1976.

Weathers was in the A’s organization from 1971 to 1978 and also played in the Blue Jays system in 1977. The Toronto Blue Jays selected Weathers in the 1976 expansion draft, but then traded him back to the A’s before spring training in a multiple-player deal.

Weathers played for two more years in the Oakland organization before beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Fullerton College from 1978 to 1979. After two years at Utah, Weathers was an assistant coach at Chapman from 1982 to 1983.

Weathers has one daughter, Jennifer, two step-daughters, Caroline and Paige, and one grandson, Cory. Mike and Charlotte Weathers reside in Irvine.

Former Dirtbag Jon ‘Doc’ Strauss is returning to the Dirtbags. After serving as the top assistant, pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at San Jose State, Strauss took over the pitching duties in January of 2008.

Strauss, who played for the Dirtbags during the team’s College World Series run in 1993 and in 1994, was on Dave Snow’s staff from 1995 to 2000 and then again as the volunteer coach in 2006. During his time at LBSU as a coach, the Dirtbags have gone 288-198, won three Big West titles, advanced to six NCAA Regionals and finished third at the 1998 College World Series behind one of the top hitting teams in school-history.

The Spartans were 34-26 in 2007 as the recruiting class for 2008 was rated among Collegiate Baseball’s annual rankings. Strauss served as the the pitching and recruiting coordinator at Loyola Marymount for three seasons (2003-05) where 11 pitchers signed pro contracts. The Lions twice won the Divisional Championship (2004-05) and reached the WCC three-game Champi-onship Series in each of those seasons.

After leaving LBSU in 2000, he was the head coach at Glendale Community College, where he went 66-25 with a pair of league titles in 2001 and 2002. He was also named the Western State Conference Coach of the Year twice.

Strauss graduated from LBSU in 1996 with a degree in psychology after spending a year in the Yankees minor league system (1994). He served as the pitching coach for Chatham in the Cape Cod League in 1997 and 1998. The 1998 team won the Cape Cod League Championship.

A Southern California native, he prepped at Glendale High School and played at the College of the Canyons prior to coming to LBSU. He and his wife Nikki had two sons, Casey and Brady.

Andy Rojo continues his second season with the Dirtbags as an assistant coach. Rojo will serve as the team’s recruiting coordinator and hitting coach while working with the outfielders and serving as the team’s first base coach.

Formerly the associate head coach to Dennis Rogers at Riverside Community College, RCC won the 2007 state championship behind a 37-18 record, after reaching the Super Regionals behind a 36-14 record in 2006.

In six combined seasons at his alma mater, RCC went 189-85 (.690). The Tigers went 115-61 (.653) over the last four seasons, as Rojo served as the program’s first full-time recruiting coordinator. The unofficial nickname of the Long Beach State 49er baseball team refers to the program’s style of play and success against higher-profile programs. The moniker was originally coined for Coach Dave Snow’s first team in 1989 which was comprised of nearly all new players. Rotating between three fields without a true home (Long Beach City College, Cerritos College and Blair Field) and practicing at a local all-dirt Pony field, that team won its first 18 games and advanced to the College World Series, a first for the program. Then-infield coach Dave Malpass would take his infielders to the all-dirt field for their rigorous workout. The infielders would then return to the regular practice field after their sessions covered in dirt. Thus the name “Dirtbags” was born. The name resurfaced again in 1993 when the 12-12 49ers rallied to win 34 of their next 41 games and finish three outs short of the National Championship game. The “Dirtbags” were once again a fan favorite at the 1998 College World Series as the country received a lesson in Dirtbag baseball.

“Being a Dirtbag is more about the attitude that you

play with. You are required to give 110% all of the

time.”Jeremy Ward, Dirtbag Minor Leaguer

“It’s a badge of honor. It means you play hard all the time. I’ve always considered myself to be a Dirtbag.”

Steve Trachsel, Major League Pitcher

“Being a Dirtbag means giving 100 per-cent in everything you do ... always going all-out on every play, and always putting the team before yourself.”Bobby Crosby, 2004 AL Rookie of the Year “A Dirtbag is a style of playing the game of baseball. It is

the type of player every team needs. He loves to play the game everyday. He maybe does not have all of the skills of the greatest players, but his attitude and the way he com-mits himself to the game is what makes this Dirtbag great. Dealing with adversity is what completes being a Dirtbag. A hardnosed, team player at all times.”

Mike Gallo, Major League Pitcher

“Being a Dirtbag means

you bring all you have

to the table in every

single game. It doesn’t

matter the conditions

or who you’re playing

or where you’re playing.

You have to get down

and get dirty and do

what you have to do to

win. It means giving up

an at-bat to move the

runner over, to hit the

sac fly, giving it all until

the moment you walk

off the field. Adam Heether,

Dirtbag Minor Leaguer

“To me the Dirtbags means a great time in my life. I enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement I had be-ing part of the Dirtbags. I still go back for the alumni games and enjoy seeing my old friends. I guess you could say that you would have to experience it personally to know what it really means.

Rocky Biddle,Fomer Major Leaguer

“A Dirtbag doesn’t have the greatest ability; on a scale from 1 to 10, you’re always a 5, but you always play hard and don’t care how pretty you look. You just get after it.”

Brian Whatley, Starting Catcher on 1993 CWS team

“We’re just a team that scrapes and gets the little things done to win. That’s what we are -- Dirt-bags. People don’t understand that yet, don’t have a clue to what’s behind us. “Chuck Lopez, Single-season record holder for hits

“Being a Dirtbag is great, it’s a great group of guys. We’re just players who like to get dirty and play hard. We’ll always battle every inning, every at-bat. It’s just a hard-nosed way to play ball.”

Jeremy Reed, Major League Outfielder.

“It was a tremendous honor to be a Dirtbag.

Being a Dirtbag means you’re a never-say-die

player who puts it all on the line all the time.”

Terrmel Sledge, Major Leaguer

“A Dirtbag is about taking the all-out approach on thefield and preparing and working harder than any-body else, being the uncommon worker and player, not just another person.”

Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies Shortstop
