Disability Summit ProgramWednesday 1 July, Hawthorn Arts CentreJoin us for a morning of presentations and community conversations about disability issues. Themes of the day include the NDIS, thinking differently about employment, and ways to be involved in your community.
Guest Speakers
Simon McKeon
Simon McKeon is a businessman, philanthropist and sportsman, and he has multiple
sclerosis. His efforts to support multiple charities have earned him great admiration.
He has been Patron for International Day of People with Disability and the National
Disability Awards, and was named 2011 Australian of the Year.
Cr Steve Hurd
Steve Hurd is a lawyer, and he was one of the first legally blind people to complete
secondary school. Steve ran for council in 2012 because he wanted to have a
positive impact on the lives of the community in his Glenferrie Ward. He has also
won many awards for his media and community work.
Madeleine Kop
Madeleine Kop is a young person with a disability. She is studying at Swinburne
University and is working as a research assistant for Victoria Police. She gained her
role as a result of taking part in the Willing and Able Mentoring (WAM) program, and
will talk about her experiences with the program.
Amanda Handley
Amanda Handley is the Customer and Service Delivery Manager for Barwon
Western Districts with Scope, a not-for-profit organisation that supports people with a
disability. She has been involved with the rollout of the National Disability Insurance
Scheme (NDIS) in the Barwon area pilot site.
What the sessions will discuss
NDIS What do we know about the NDIS? What does the future look like? Tier 1 - 3 in easy English What can you do to get ready for NDIS?
Employment How can you get help to find work? Why businesses should employ outside the box Some examples of current programs
Participation How do you find out about what is happening in your community? How can you get involved in your community? What ideas do you have for Council?
