What is this book about?

The Victorian government is giving money to help disability self help groups.

It is called the Victorian disability self help grants program.

Groups can ask for money from the program.

In this book we will tell you

how you can ask for money

• things that we can give money to

You can ask for up to $5000 each year. This will be for two years.

There are rules for this money. Only some groups can ask for money.

In this book hard words are in blue. We say what the hard word says after the first time we use it.

Who can ask to get money?

We will give money to disability self help groups

Disability self help groups

• are people with disability or their families

• bring people together to talk about things they have in common

• support each other by sharing their stories

• support people to be independent in their community.

We can give money to disability self help groups which:

• are about disability

• are controlled by people with disability or

• are controlled by families of people with disability

• have people who are always part of the group, these people are called members

• are not a government group

• do not make money from having a group

• have an Australian Business Number or

• can be supported by a group that has an Australian Business Number

• have a bank account for the group.

Important groups to get money

We would like to make sure that some groups of people get money, for example:

• groups that support people to make decisions about their own lives

• groups that support people to be independent in the community

• groups of Aboriginal people

• groups of young people who are 12-25 years old

• groups of women or girls

• groups of people from other countries

• groups of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse or intersex.

Who is not allowed to ask for money?

Your group can’t ask for money if the main thing it does is:

• advocacy

• sport

• exercise

• therapy

• singing

• painting

• making music

Sometimes we can let groups do these things.

Your group can use money for:

1. Everyday things like:

• rooms to have meetings in

• getting to meetings

• interpreters

• child care

• support workers.

7. Small things for your office or building like:

• furniture.

• leaflets to ask people to join your group

• webpages about your group.

12. Letting people know about your group:

• posters

• newsletters.

Things your group can’t use money for

Your group can’t use money for:

• meals or food for meetings

Sometimes you can use money for food.

• going to places that are not meetings of your group, for example conferences

• paying staff (but you can pay for support workers)

• paying guest speakers

• equipment to be used by one person, for example wheelchairs

• computers

• iPads

• mobile phones

• things for art and crafts

• buying or renting cars

• presents for people

• paying someone to write the form to get money.

How to ask for money

There is a form you need to write on.

The form is on the disability self help grants web page at:

https://providers.dhhs.vic.gov.au/disability-self-help-grants-program

We need the form by midnight on Friday 12 July.

You can talk to a person if you need help.
