WHAT’S DISC REPAIR ALL ABOUT?

Disc repair involves the resurfacing of the

polycarbonate layer on an optical disc. This

polycarbonate layer is generally 1,200 microns thick -

an average human hair is 70 microns thick, one micron

is one thousandth of a millimeter. Most light scratches

are around 5 to 10 microns deep. Considering this

information, a typical optical disc can be repaired

many times. The repair process involves a

combination of compound (wet or dry) and polishing

pad(s) to remove scratch damage. The compound acts

as a mild abrasive that gently buffs out damage while

the polishing pads ensure the disc is resurfaced

uniformly and to provide the primary abrasive action.

Most damage can be repaired as long as it is confi ned

to the polycarbonate layer, where most normal damage

occurs. Refer to the FAQ section on page 18 and 19 to

fi nd out what types of disc damage occur.

DISC REPAIR MODES - LIGHT, MEDIUM, HEAVY

Light Damage Discs

Light damage is characterized by small, hairline scratches. It can

also comprise light scuffs, marks and deposits such as food or

glue residue. This type of damage cannot normally be felt when

running your fi ngernail across the scratch.

Medium Damage Discs

Medium damage typically comprises larger scratches than those

in the Light category. Medium scratches can be felt by running

your fi ngernail across the scratch; however, your nail should not

stop in the scratch. More extensively damaged discs with many

surface scratches will typically have several that fall into the

Medium damage category.

Heavy Damage Discs

Heavy damage is the deep knife or screwdriver type of damage

that, when you run your fi ngernail across the scratch, will stop

your fi ngernail in the scratch. This type of damage can be very

severe. Occasionally it may be necessary to process a heavily

damaged disc through a Heavy Cycle more than once.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO FIX A DISC?This depends on how deep the scratches are and how many layers need to be buffed down to repair the disc.

Each DISC-GO-TECH disc repair machine comes with supplies to repair up to at least 100 discs. Based on the

cost of re-ordering polish compound and polishing pads, the average disc repair cost is 25 cents.

HOW AND WHEN DO I ORDER ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES?You will need to change the polish pads and compound after a general number of disc repairs have been

performed. Each DISC-GO-TECH repair machine has a different recommended number of discs that can be

repaired before changing the polish pads and compound. All DISC-GO-TECH repair machines run on one

set of pads and one type of polish compound making the repair process the most simple and effi cient on the

market. Some machines on the market require the changing of compounds and pads throughout a single repair

cycle. This increases the money and effort it takes to complete a repair. How often you need to replace the

pads, compound, and Final Spray is also determined by how long and how aggressively the repair cycles are

run on any DISC-GO-TECH repair machine. Longer, more aggressive repair cycles means the machine uses

more polish and puts more wear on its polishing pads. The only other supplies you have to buy is the Final

Spray. The Final Spray will last for quite some time relative to the amount of discs you repair, as you only need

to give each newly repaired disc one spritz and a wipe, before using or storing it.

WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE CAN BE REPAIRED AND WHAT CANNOT?In most instances light, medium, and heavy scratches can be repaired (provided there is none of the types of

damage detailed below).

• Foil damage - occurs when the graphic side of a disc has been scratched. Severe foil damage can easily be

seen by holding the label side of the disc up to a strong light source and observing the shiny side of the disc. If

light can be seen through the disc then it has defi nite foil damage and cannot be repaired.

• Cracks - inspect the disc fi rst for any cracks. Typically, discs will start to split from the inside ring, and work

towards the outer edge. If any crack is found, the disc cannot be repaired.

• Dents and Deep Gouges - large indentations on either side of the disc. Dents and gouges will sometimes

appear to be deep scratches; however they have caused irreversible damage to the disc and cannot be repaired.

• Warping - when the disc has been bent or warped due to heat damage. This damage will typically be seen

around the entire edge of the disc and in the refl ection of the disc and cannot be repaired.
