Abstract

A Study on the Court Music

of Diplomatic Events in Joseon

Dynasty

In the present study, features of the music used for the ambassador

reception ceremony at the royal palace of Joseon Dynasty were analyzed on

the basis of the records in Oryeseo(The Reports of National Five

Rituals), the diplomatic documents, and Uigwe(The Royal Protocols of

the Joseon Dynasty) to investigate the changes over time.

In the early Joseon Dynasty, Orye(Five Rituals) was systematically

applied as a protocol for the national ceremonies. Orye also includes the

procedures for the ceremonies related to the diplomatic relationships with

China and the other neighboring countries. Large-scale royal banquets were

held only when a Chinese ambassador was dispatched to Joseon. The

procedures of the royal banquets held in the royal court indicated that the

scale of the reception ceremony for a Chinese ambassador was greater than

that for the ambassadors from other countries. With regard to the music

used for the ambassador reception ceremonies, only the musical pieces of

Aak(Confucian Ritual Music) were played in the period of King Sejongs

rule. The musical pieces played in the period of King Seongjongs rule are

unknown, but the orchestration included the musical instruments for Aak,

Dangak(Chinese Music), and Hyangak(Korean Music).

In the late Joseon Dynasty, the international exchange with Japan has

decreased. The diplomatic relationship with Japan was discontinued

immediately after the completion of the war by the Japanese invasion in

1592. When the international exchange was resumed later, a Japanese

ambassador was permitted to come to only the Japanese Bureau located in

Busan city, and thus the ambassador reception ceremony was held in a

different manner. The diplomatic documents of late Joseon Dynasty showed

that the dance performed in the ambassador reception ceremonies during that

period was all based on Hyangak, and the accompaniment music was

Dangak and Hyangak.

The original form and scale of the ambassador reception ceremony were

not maintained, but the national tradition of a guest reception ceremony

music continued until the late Joseon Dynasty by reflecting the needs of the

time to the Orye protocols.
