Context

• Disclosure are an English electronic dance music duo, consisting of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence

• Their album Settle, released in 2013 was nominated for best Dance album and the 2014 Grammy awards.

Conventions

• Similarly to pop, dance music usually relates to love. In this case the artist is singing about how his SO has left him, this explains why the artist is alone in the music video.

• However unlike pop we don’t see dance routines, even though we see people dancing.

• Similarly to a POP music video there are bright colours (lighting, props. Costumes etc)

Goodwin’s Theory: Close up of the artist throughout the music video to help sell the artist.

Performance/Concept

• The music video is a mixture between Performance and Concept. We see the artist lip-syncing to the lyrics of the song for most of the video

• There are also random scenes throughout the music video, such as the scenes of people dancing, the tattoo artist and police/swat. These scenes are all parallel edited to Sam Smith singing.

Goodwin’s Theory

• This video is aimed at both female and male audiences. The police/swat scenes will attract the male audience. However the scenes of the couples dancing will attract the female audience and possibly some male audiences as well.
